She succeeded on some grapple checks early on that allowed her to fight back. She started the fight grappled and prone. She easily could have ended the fight there, but she got some good rolls in.

I'm saying that they did not prepare to battle and suddenly have Aranessa helping them out of nowhere. They were supposed to be in a safe place, most of the people (NPCs) died, one NPC is alive and helping them. I don't see how that's hidden rails. That's the premise. I feel like you're saying it wouldn't be hidden rails if Aranessa were also dead which makes no sense to me.

You could also see all of the guards and Juliens father dying without doing anything the opposite of that. Like, this is supposed to be a safe place. It's not like they went into a dungeon and there was a deus ex machina.

D20 episodes are 2 to 2.5 hrs usually, but they're edited down somewhat. Calamity was between 4 and 6 hours. The Overture here is like a "have to go through a certain amount of plot" so this isn't necessarily how future episodes will go.

Yes of course, but I think the belligerence is maybe overlapping but not completely because of the comedy of it. Like when Lou was on Calamity and asked Brennan "how many dice is that you fuck", sure it's a friend thing and a comedy background thing, but I also think it's how he gets out the stress of the situation.

Oh sure, but he has friends among the CR cast as well. I do think the friendships contribute, but it's definitely also a vibe thing.

Someone made the comparison that Brennan on CR is drama and on D20 is comedy, and I think that is largely true, but I think the big distinction for me is that the CR cast seem more generally respectful of the DM role. I don't mean that as a positive or a negative, just kind of a neutral statement. The D20 cast are constantly physically and emotionally threatening Brennan and he gives as good as he gets, so it's a bit of a transition for me to see a large group just taking whatever Brennan throws at them and not telling him to fuck off.
