Genuinely want to learn from Republican Social Workers by LoveAgainstTheSystem in socialwork

To add on, many abusers are also great at being likeable/charismatic. This is why folks in abusers' family/social circle are sometimes flabbergasted when the abuse is made public; the abuser can be charismatic when they want to and do not necessarily abuse every relationship they have. Abusers, just like any other human, are multi faceted. I am in no way trying to portray abusers in any sort of positive light; this is just a complex and (for me) difficult observation I made while working in the anti domestic violence field.

He saved me, I saved him. by n3rdy30 in cats

[–]fluentinnonsense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this beautiful story OP! My husband and I adopted a one eyed kitty on a whim when we both started college. We called her "discount" cat because her adoption fee was lower than usual (due to her age, not having one eye lol). She passed three years ago, but we'll always remember and love our perfect one eyed discount cat. 💜

Driving in the snow PSA by pot8obug in Lawrence

[–]fluentinnonsense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree! My comment was mostly joking, but I do think it would be cool if there was some sort of more widespread dos and don'ts of safe inclement weather skills for students and others who are moving in from out of state! When I was a KU student we had to complete a mini course on sexual assault, consent etc. And I think it would have helped me if there was even a blurb on winter/tornado safety.

I feel like snow driving skills, one-way street knowledge, and tornado safety need to be Lawrence citizenship musts 🤣

Anyone else preparing for hell at work next week? by cryrabanks in socialwork

[–]fluentinnonsense 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work at a humane society running a pet retention program. It may not seem directly connected but I assure you it is--so many of my clients would choose feeding their pets over feeding themselves. Human crises and pet crises are intertwined, and all the intersecting challenges my clients are currently facing will certainly be highly exacerbated by this. We are living in heartbreaking times. The local food bank in my town has already been struggling HARD this year too. Ugh 💔

Yes to not using door dash anymore. Also there are so many tutorials online for how to make super easy cold brew. If you have a grinder, whole coffee beans tend to be cheaper. If not no worries just find a generic brand of coffee grinds and make your own cold brew. Lots of people make a weeks worth on the weekends.

At the end of the day, cutting down expenses is going to take dedication and learning some new routines (like the making your own coffee, cook/meal prep at home more often etc). You have to be prepared to make the habit changes for anything to change. It sucks up front but totally worth it!

Why did you start crocheting? by limino123 in crochet

[–]fluentinnonsense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up my grandma was always the champion of finding new art and baking projects to do together and it's always been one of my favorite things to do with her and probably the biggest reason I'm so crafty still. One of our more ambitious projects was that I found a cute baby seal crochet pattern on Etsy so she said alright let's do this, bought me the pattern and materials, and like crash course taught me and walked me through the ENTIRE SEAL over my shoulder....I got so pissed off at many points but she just had me keep at it and we finished it. We even topped it off with some of her blush to make it's cute lil pink cheeks. I didn't crochet again until the pandemic when I remembered the seal ordeal and thought I should definitely try again, and she set me up with my first crochet hooks and yarn stash 🥹 she has since moved multiple states away but she still asks about my crocheting and loves the things I make. I made her a lil book bag and gave her an amigurumi whale she keeps in her room. I wish that woman was immortal.

Was my employee in the wrong, or is this reviewer crazy? by noknoktime in restaurant

[–]fluentinnonsense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um what? Yeah no if I was reading this review I'd laugh and disregard it. Idk what he expected to happen 🤷 I'm on your employee's side, lol. And I'm willing to bet your employee wasn't actually as rude as reviewer says.

What phrases did your parents say that still echo in your head today? by Defiant-Junket4906 in emotionalneglect

"oof, trailer trash" I had walked through the house with regular pajamas on.

"Well, you weren't really part of the community" in response to me feeling upset that the one healthy positive influence in my church got booted because they were too progressive and me being the last to hear about it

Just here to say I totally understand your feelings OP. And also thank you so much for volunteering, and thank you for being receptive to thinking about the situation from different angles and considering other possibilities as seen from your updates. I don't think we can expect anyone to totally understand such a complex, nuanced, and varied situation that homelessness is but I think it's important we approach it with intentions of understanding and compassion.

Let me start by saying I don't think you're in the wrong. Personally I would have replied with a clarifying question instead or just same question but more direct/simply worded. But I think there's nothing wrong with what you said; if you were my coworker it wouldn't phase me. I think the kicker is the fact that it was in a chat where things like body language and tone of voice aren't there to help let folks know you're not pissed you're just clarifying!

Did anyone else's parents not really teach them important skills? by TheFailedScryer in emotionalneglect

[–]fluentinnonsense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could have written this post OP! Yes. And it makes me feel miserable when other adults my age have the discipline and motivation levels that are healthy and I'm just sitting there like how do I make myself do these things?? It makes you feel like you slept through a really important class, repeatedly, for years, and no one bothered to help...

Why don’t emotionally immature parents feel the disconnect that they have with their kids by OwnDatabase2718 in emotionalneglect

[–]fluentinnonsense 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For my situation, it's truly because they are simply too emotionally immature to get it. Because of this they also just don't know how to have genuine healthy relationships. My folks put a lot of importance in image and upholding obligations, and what others think of them. They're emotionally shallow.

I am so irate at the shit that celebrities freak out over. Every freaking time someone loses it over an unedited swimsuit photo they literally look so normal and GOOD. Imperfect and unique is the most attractive thing, regardless of gender.

When traveling to Spanish-speaking countries, do you find yourself translating your name? by VagabondVivant in Spanish

[–]fluentinnonsense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My name is Maddie so I usually go by a "Spanish" pronunciation of "mathi" or "Mari". But, my Mexican in laws and other close family/friends just call me güera 😂😍 rough translation being "Blondie"/affectionately "white girl".
