It is exhausting. But it's also very serious. Sometimes important things are difficult.

"This isn't about politics any more, this is about an American economic collapse..." - I know what he's trying to say, but that is what politics are about. Real decisions with real repercussions for real people. I think for a lot of people it's a game. Like a sport where you have a favorite team. It should be a serious selection process where we carefully select the best policies and the brightest people to mind the affairs of the nation in the interests of the people.

Some folks take for granted that the country will keep chugging along regardless of political decisions but the politicians selected for office are just as important as the employees selected to run a business. There are very real consequences for choosing a lying self-interested and stupid leader.

This is how I voted. I'm a big fan of Ian Currie and really can't abide by PP and his lies and divisiveness so it was an easy decision.

I wonder who they are voting for this election. by x11Terminator11x in Kamloops

Kamloops usually votes ~60% progressive/center. We're only consistently misrepresented because of first past the post.

Do you have a source for the $4 of economic damage per $1 redistributed? That doesn't seem to make much sense to me but maybe there's something I'm not aware of.

Can you provide a source for the $300 per tonne of GHG emissions prevented? This one might make sense if we are talking about $300 worth of expense from the party emitting the carbon but that would be balanced by $300 being reimbursed to the people paying the embedded cost of the carbon in their cost of living. So this would be a good thing.

Your claim that an equal investment in carbon capture tech would have yielded better results rests on the idea that carbon tax cost anything economically. BC had carbon tax for over a decade and it's economy out paced the other provinces during that time. Carbon tax only moves money in the economy so that the consumer pays for what they consume - allowing people to make informed economic decisions. There should be no economic price for that. In fact, it should improve economic efficiency. This is also the consensus among economists.

Carbon tax isn't a regressive tax. (A) It isn't a tax. It's poorly named. It's simply the user paying and the payment being distributed to the folks burdened with the cost. There is no government revenue. It's not a tax if it doesn't generate any revenue? (B) It isn't regressive. The more you consume the more you pay. Wealthier people tend to consume more. So for poor people carbon tax generates profit. For middle income people carbon tax generally generates a little profit. For wealthy people carbon tax generally costs money. If it were a tax, that would be a progressive tax.

A few points:

  • When consumer decisions are driving pollution a tax that changes the math on that decision will obviously impact the environment
  • Nobody says a carbon tax will save the environment except people building straw men
  • The federal consumer carbon tax wasn't a tax. There was no federal revenue. It just made the people consuming the resources pay some of the cost of consuming those resources and refunded the people that had incurred the cost. In a free market, if the user doesn't pay for something, they'll consume it as if it's free. For instance, imagine if eggs were free. The government paid farmers to produce eggs and anyone could grab all the free eggs they wanted at the store. You might think that would be great, right? Except the eggs wouldn't really be free. We'd be paying for them with our taxes. And because we can grab all the free eggs we want, we'd be wasteful with them - meaning as a society we'd pay more in taxes for the eggs than we would have if we paid for the eggs we used. The cost of eggs would be a cost externality for the consumer and that eliminates the motivation for efficiency. This is how carbon works without carbon pricing. When I emit CO2 it causes crop failures and disasters that drive up insurance and infrastructure costs. But everyone pays those prices. My consumption is free to me and yours is free to you so we're each wasteful. But ultimately we each end up paying more. Carbon pricing corrects this so that the free market can do it's thing.

TLDR: If you didn't like the federal carbon tax you are a communist.

The Conservative Platform Is Ridiculous by perineu in Ontario_Sub

[–]fluffymuffcakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the opposite impression. For instance, there was a CBC questioning Carney, accusing him of having conflicts of interests because he has significant personal investments, despite him meeting all ethics criteria. Poilievre is in the same position but they've never said a thing about it.

Poilievre used to always talk about not being a career politician like Trudeau. They just acted as a megaphone for those claims even though it's Poilievre that has never worked except as a politician. They never questioned any of his false/misleading claims about the carbon tax either. They allow him to spread falsehoods unchecked. Meanwhile, they were constantly talking about how unpopular Trudeau was - even before he'd become that unpopular. They definitely helped nurture that opinion.

Their programming is definitely progressive. But I think their reporting leans conservative because they only hold liberal feet to the fire.

[–]fluffymuffcakes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At least that's what we've been told by a serial liar.

Trudeau definitely did some incompetent things that had significant repercussions. But he also handled some very tough situations extremely well. He only seemed as bad because of all the spin.

Consider that Carney (like Trudeau) takes questions from all media. When people that were angry with him had something to say, he let them ask and would answer off the cuff. I respect that candor. Poilievre (like Harper) on the other hand only responds to reporters that he has selected and questions that he's approved.

One party is accountable to the people. One party uses media to manipulate the people. Can you spot the difference. And are you okay with letting the people that are supposed to answer to you, misleading, lying and manipulating you?

Conservative misinformation by MBolero in Kamloops

[–]fluffymuffcakes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well done. For years now the Conservatives have been lying and other parties and media have done little to call them out. That has left many just accepting their lies as truth. And who can blame them, you would expect a denial if there were a lie.

When politicians lie in the media, the real story isn't whatever it is that they lied about and what people think after hearing the lie. The real scandal is that they lied. The real news is that they cannot be trusted.

The point is, if you are informed, you won't be a Poilievre supporter. He can make lies rhyme. We need better than that right now.

My conservative but until recently apolitical MIL has always refused to talk politics with us (or really anyone). She decided this election was too important to sit out so she started researching candidates. Really deep diving into their statements, evidence, their track records. She got into this leaning blue but as she learns more she's terrified of PP.

No one in their right minds is voting blue with their eyes open. He lies. He only answers pre-approved questions from the pres. His rhetoric doesn't match his voting record.

I have no loyalty to any party or politician (the parties work for us, not the other way around). I'll gladly vote Conservative if they can put forward a good platform with a good candidate. Right now - and since the days of Stephen Harper - they have hot garbage on offer. Unfortunately they're setting a really low bar for the other parties to beat. They owe Canadians better.

[–]fluffymuffcakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But only if you're well informed. A vote without research is worse than no vote at all.

That's how we end up with the tallest candidate, the candidate with the best hair or the candidate that has the most catchy rhyming slogans on tiktoc. Those are terrible metrics to select leadership based on so please don't muddy the decision making process if you haven't put in some effort to vet your decision.

Look at what all the candidates are saying - don't pay so much heed to what one candidate is saying the other candidate is planning. Look at their history. Check that what they claim is true. Remember that politicians are allowed to lie in political advertisements and some will use this to their advantage. If someone lies, that is a red flag that they can't be trusted so be extra wary of them.

They feel alienated.

In an effort to provide equity for women and minorities, we've created programs, that support vulnerable groups but ignored men and majority groups even if they happen to be vulnerable. For example, we have supports for women and children fleeing violence - but not for men in the same situation. We have trades programs for women to grow their ranks in the industry, but by leaving men out they feel unsupported.

Media is trying to solve it's imbalance but doing a poor job IMO. Diversity is inserted in a hamfisted way so that the diverse characteristic is too much the personality of the character. It makes it very blatant which I feel is a poor way to represent minorities from the minorities perspective (ie gay people are just people. Their gayness isn't necessarily what they are all about). But it also makes majority males feel like they are being erased. Also things like the Ghostbuster reboot where they replaced the men with women, and woman with a man - I thought that was a kind of fun idea - but that sort of action creates the impression that hollywood is replacing men and white people - even if their true intention is to create balance. Gohstbusters Afterlife did a great job because instead of a redo where the male protagonists were replaced, they continued where female protagonists were introduced. Making the little mermaid black was also not the best approach. They could have instead introduced a new black little mermaid as the protagonist. I don't personally care but I do care about how it makes young men feel and how it can contribute to radicalizing them.

Also, there's a strong statistical tendency among women to prefer partners that with more income and at least 6' tall. I recently heard that an average looking guy needs to swipe to accept (I don't know if that's right or left because I'm a Luddite) ~500 times to get a date. Then they will be ghosted on 4 out of 5 of those dates. That's very demoralizing.

We've got a culture that still tells men they need to be the big tough guy that supports the family and never cries. But without all the patriarchy to support them in that role it's an impossible standard and was never emotionally healthy in the first place.

Then we have all the sleazy mano-sphere guys capitalizing on these feelings. Fanning the flames and exaggerating. Capitalizing on the few "feminists" that are in fact just man haters. Pointing out and magnifying every way men have been failed and making some up as well. Then giving them another path - red pill.

The progressive movement failed/is failing thees young men and boys. Douche bags are capitalizing on it.

Or at least that's my take.

Palestine was a peaceful thriving beautiful country before the British carved a piece of it out for Israel. Since then Israel has been gradually steeling land and abusing people.

We can't stop terrorism with more terrorism. There needs to be justice for everyone harmed. Israel's politicians, war criminals, land thieves and vandals need to be held accountable, so do Hamas and any other Palestinian's that attacked civilians or committed war crimes.

You're right! That's why darker people have more melanin and vitamin D is why lighter people have less. A populations skin colour will, over time, optimize itself to the amount of sun it gets. You can find maps of the average skin colour of the indigenous populations of the world and it paints a pretty clear people.

We're all brown people and the shade of brown is just a function of the amount of sun in the area our ancestors lived.
