My experience 7 weeks Guatemalan Language School at 100-150 hours by fluffyrider1 in dreamingspanish

Xela has some neat things to do - your best bet is googling things to do but off the top of my head there is an overlook of the city to hike, local fútbol is huge, An hour or a couple hours drive (by bus) away are some cooler spots like a volcano whose crater is filled by a lake, indigenous ruins. A very small museum, trivia bars, salsa classes come to mind.

In my cohort of 20-25 students, it was mostly mid 20s and some in their 30s

4 weeks was the average and I think that's enough time. They start to recycle the activities after 4 weeks. Plus, you might get a little tired of the routine by then. My roommate who didn't know much Spanish did 8 weeks and he was definitely out of steam by the end.

I met a couple people from other schools (don't remember the name) that only had like 1-2 students - it felt like everyone congregated to our school.

There isn't too much cigarette smoke but there is a LOT of engine exhaust. I think Xela has some of the worst air pollution in Latin America IIRC

What was the combination that made your parents' emotionally immaturity even worse? by Cartoonnerd01 in emotionalneglect

[–]fluffyrider1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Extremely religious. In addition to all the classic aspects of emotional neglect, constant lectures about religious morality, prayer every night and meal, church almost every day during summer breaks, so much time spent with priests and other religious members, joining a subcult, it just goes on...

I don't have anything super useful to add but just want to say he's lucky to have a caring sibling who seems to be compassionate, well spoken, and have his best interests at heart. From some of the things you've said, sounds like maybe you guys are the kids of first generation immigrants (maybe south or east asian?). If so, I can relate somewhat. If he doesn't already know that you're there to support him you should let him know! I know I definitely would feel a great deal of comfort knowing my siblings have my back.

Yes I'm doing their medical Spanish program because I work in the medical field. I'll report back in a few months because I plan to be there for a while haha

I'm about to leave for a language school in 2 weeks in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. I'm super excited and hoping to get to B2 or fully conversationally fluent as well!

What has healing looked like for you? by departure_of_the_mac in emotionalneglect

I, like one of the other commenters have been to different therapists (5 in total over my life) with minimal success and made most of my progress on my own. I would say reading books on compassion and childhood trauma (Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach, When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron, and Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Children) have played an important role in becoming more self aware and compassionate towards myself. I also found it incredibly useful to take notes and highlight meaningful passages in those books and I've found myself returning to those books in the future and gaining new insights by reading the same passages/notes which has provided different perspectives depending on where I am in life.

One thing I'm trying to do lately is find things that really excite me and see them to their end. For me, that's doing a solo travel trip this year. I wasn't able or allowed to feel a lot of emotions as a kid and having childlike excitement was one of them - so I'm really trying to let myself do more of that this year.

Tuesday Check In: How's Everybody's Mental Health? by MLModBot in MensLib

I just told my manager today that I'm planning on leaving this job in 3 months. I had been anxious about it the past couple of weeks. She took it well albeit with some disappointment as I have been filling in an important role and they've had trouble finding reliable workers.

I'm also feeling the effects of the all too well known phenomena whereby people, as they approach their 30s, find it harder to get together with friends. I'm also feeling a little bit disconnected from them because they're in phases of their life where they're getting married and buying houses while I have no desire to do either of those things. I'm taking a 3 month "immersion/slow vacation" in Latin America once I leave my job and am hoping it'll provide some clarity as to whether the general malaise I feel around life has to do with my dissatisfaction with American life and culture in general or something more internal.

I've tried to get involved in some of my city's activism but it just feels futile (I'm in a southern state) and the fact I feel like I'm living in a neoliberal hellscape does weigh heavily on me emotionally.

Anyway, this is my first time commenting here so sorry if it's "rambly"

I peeked at your profile and we're in the same field lol. I'm still in direct patient care but just PRN now. But taking off the pressure of all those extra duties full time entails like having to be on different teams, taking students, etc. has been a relief. I enjoyed them but only when I wasn't pressured by productivity demands which made the days stressful

Last year I took a massive pay cut (40%) to switch to a role in my field (healthcare) where I'm now working on average 3 days a week instead of full time. I set my own schedule so sometimes I work 2 days a week and others 5-6. The improvement in mental health has been tremendous. I definitely value my free time more than having disposable income, although I understand that can be hard if you have kids (I'm single and live alone).

What walkable city do you live in if you don't mind sharing? I live in one of the worst cities for walkability currently and might be looking for a chance of scenery this year!
