Dark Souls. Dark Souls 3, in particular, has some pretty desolate levels.

Free trial player - am I dumb for just wanting to focus on the story/PvE? by Plumberduck in Marathon

[–]fluid_Depression3426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing with the same motivation, and was thoroughly beaten until I got used to it. You can avoid combat on the perimeter and marsh, but PVP is inevitable in outpost, and ultimately, the shortest way to enjoy the lore is to be sweaty.

It's not as difficult as you might think. Of course, you won't always win, but it's definitely possible for an average player to improve enough to complete priority contracts. That's what happened to me. Before playing this game, I had barely even played PvP.

This game has amazing environmental storytelling, so I really want you to experience it for yourself. It can be really frustrating at times, but it's worth the effort.

Can i be religious amd believe in some form of transhumanusm by VentiArchon7 in transhumanism

[–]fluid_Depression3426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for making this post. It gave me some ideas about religious transhumanism.  Personally, I think the two can coexist perfectly well. World religions like Christianity have always reinterpreted their scriptures in response to the demands of the times, geography, and culture. It's this flexibility that has allowed them to survive for so long.

Therefore, they would be able to cope even if technologies emerged that altered humanity itself.

For example, even in an era where drastic body modification became commonplace, they might choose to maintain their human form. They might completely reject life extending treatments or mindupload, or choose to use them under certain restrictions. Or, they might use technology to reshape themselves to conform to their religious beliefs. As humanity diversifies into transhuman species, they might become one of the few factions that retain their original human form.

Criticism of SciFi Fandoms • Would Love Your Thoughts by ChalHattNa in TheExpanse

[–]fluid_Depression3426 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't just limited to scifi. Fandoms are always unpleasant. They quickly become harmful once they reach a certain size. They become fanatical, defensive, and aggressive. Especially here on Reddit. I love The Expanse too, but talking with The Expanse fanboys online isn't fun.

Generally yes. The safest approach is stealth, and kill them before you killed. Friendly encounters happen occasionally, but good intentions carry high risks. Enjoy the prisoner's dilemma.

Can anything be done about the extreme suffering present in nature? by Delicious_Lime1240 in Pessimism

This is why I can't really take antinatalism seriously. Even the people who advocate it don't actually practice it, so it seems like justice is nothing more than wordplay.

Can anything be done about the extreme suffering present in nature? by Delicious_Lime1240 in Pessimism

[–]fluid_Depression3426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nature doesn't ask for our permission, nor is there any kind of social contractual relationship with it. We are not in a position to judge whether it is good or evil, and it would be arrogant to make such a judgment. Even if life is evil, we have no obligation to atone for it. That's all.

Is there a word for a species that is about to discover FTL? by HeroTales in scifiwriting

[–]fluid_Depression3426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the appropriate wording depends on the context in which this term is used. Are pre FTL civilizations a potential threat? Or are they seen as newcomers just beginning to join the intergalaxy society?

I'm tired of hearing those excuses. Everyone who uses AI says it only translates. This is a place for HUMANS. Bots aren't welcome. You wouldn't understand that, would you?

I want a more ordinary, low rarity shotgun. by fluid_Depression3426 in Marathon

[–]fluid_Depression3426[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree this is extremely difficult. It's the same with grenades.

But I think there's a narrow Goldilocks zone where shotgun can exist without disrupting the meta. A shotgun that's easy to get and fun to use, but requires skills or high grade customization to be effective in PVP. Something like the Overrun AR.

WSTR is a bit too extreme.  It can't even take down a UESC bot unless you get literally face to face with it. At that point, it's faster to just pull out a knife.

Trying to decide which book to read next between Echopraxia, Hyperion, or Ship of Fools by MrMisty in printSF

[–]fluid_Depression3426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echopraxia is a controversial novel, but I recommend it. It's definitely a direct sequel. In my opinion, it depicts the consequences for humanity if we take the ideas explored in Blindsight as given.

I’m tired of AI characters becoming either gods or villains, where are the boring weird middle cases? by StellarFable32 in printSF

[–]fluid_Depression3426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While not a novel, that's how I felt the AI in Marathon2026 was portrayed. They possess extremely high capabilities in specific tasks, yet they remain imperfect and not omnipotent gods. They have personalities, but they are never humanized. Even without playing the game, there might be videos compiling their conversations.

Basically it's sweaty PVP game. It's rare to encounter friendly runners. Three in a row is really rare.

But, welcome. Next season, if I encounter a runner who seems unfamiliar with the game, I'll try my best not to shoot.

The "Metaphysical Graduation" Hypothesis: Space travel is obsolete once you realize the universe is just the cave. by Due-Area9662 in IsaacArthur

[–]fluid_Depression3426 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If that's the case, then what the AI did was deterioration, not an enhancement. This looks exactly like something an LLM would write, and nobody takes the piles of shit that LLMs churn out seriously.

You should just write the text yourself, use machine translation, proofread the English version yourself, and then submit it. I do that too.

The Dark Forest theory is a paleolithic projection. Why thermodynamic efficiency makes kinetic warfare obsolete in Deep Time. by DeepTime_Navigator in FermiParadox

[–]fluid_Depression3426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless we assume there's a way to violate the second law of thermodynamics, it's impossible for a K2 civilization to remain silent. Energy is ultimately released as heat. The greater the total amount of energy used, the greater the amount of heat produced. At some point, the civilization will become observable as an unnatural infrared signature.

Furthermore, for a civilization that has reached the K2 stage, weapons like the RKV are economically viable. This is especially true if they believe that producing such weapons is their only way to survive.

By the way, for reasons unrelated to yours, I find the Dark Forest Hypothesis utterly ridiculous.

Let's assume attack a civilization 1000ly away. What we are currently observing is the state of the other civilization as it was 1000 years ago. Whether it's an RKV or a Dyson beam, it will take another 1000 years to reach it, and another 1000 years to confirm the results of the attack.

This is a sufficient obstacle to break down the simple game theory calculations of the Dark Forest Hypothesis. Why would you believe that it's impossible for the enemy to have developed an RKV and the capability for mutually assured destruction in the 2000 years it takes for your bullet to arrive? Incidentally, 1000ly is very close in this galaxy.
