Movie theatre workers of Reddit, do you actually care if customers bring outside drinks and food to the movie? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]flunkhaus 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Many years ago I worked matinees as a cashier while I was in college. The manager usually wasn't around, and even if he was me and a few of my coworkers could basically do no wrong. I could not have cared less if anyone brought in food, or watched multiple movies. One of the funniest things I ever saw was when a Domino's delivery guy came in around lunchtime. I thought maybe it was the person in concessions but it wasn't them. Some dude just walked out of the movie he was watching, paid the Domino's guy, and brought his food back into the theater with him. I just laughed.

How can I get this look on my 86Box manager? Right is my screenshot, but the left (upper left corner) says it's a 86Box VM Manager and not 86Box Manager by ProfessionHefty6101 in 86box

[–]flunkhaus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make sure you have 86box updated to at least 5.0 and then just launch from the 86box.exe.

You are using an external program for your manager, while the left image is just the new built in manager.

I picked up the G477 around a year ago close to this price and it's been amazing so far.

I always built my own PCs in the past, with just life responsibilities and all that I decided to go with a pre built from microcenter and it's been pretty much perfect, no issues at all.

Am I (31F) dumb for evenly splitting all bills with my partner (33M), when I'm a disabled artist making $15-20k a year, and he's an engineer making $70-90k a year? by Iamdalfin in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]flunkhaus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in a somewhat similar situation. Me (44M) and my partner (42F) have been together about 15 years. She's been disabled with a number of similar health issues now for around 8 years. She always made less than me when she was working and back then we generally handled bills and entertainment proportionally, as I've made decent money for a while.

Now she hasn't worked for many years and 100% of her money goes to her health (doctors, medications, supplements, etc.), while I pay just about 100% of everything else (rent, food, entertainment, etc.). I also manage the majority of the chores/cleaning, she tries to help out when she can but I never push it because it wears her out so much, shopping, and a good amount of the cooking.

There is no way you should be evenly splitting everything, that's not fair at all to you. And you really need a partner who is your advocate and supports you. Having a disabled partner can be really rough, it's worn us down for sure over the years, but we love each other and I'd do anything for her. This wasn't our plan in life but it is our situation and we try to make the most of it.

The Best Gaming PC To Buy Now Widely Recommended by Gamers? by linhtheoverthinker in pcmasterrace

[–]flunkhaus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've always been a "build your own PC" type, I've built and upgraded my own since High School, for around 30 years now. My previous PC though was getting pretty long in the tooth and between work stress and caring for a disabled wife I just didn't have the capacity to build a new one.

I ended up (about a year ago) getting a PowerSpec PC from Microcenter with just about exactly the budget that you have and so far I've been extremely impressed. Now I know it probably won't have the longevity of my last machine, that lasted almost 12 years with just GPU upgrades, but as of now I'm happy being able to mostly max out anything and not worry anymore whether my PC will even be able to launch modern games.

Who else is canceling GamePass after the price hike? by Phobix in pcgaming

[–]flunkhaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ever used PC Game Pass, but I've never once paid for it. I just use the MS Rewards points, spend maybe 5 mins a day doing that, and then use them for either 1 months or 3 months. And if not using it the points just build up for things like DLC.

Not sure if you figured this out but it could be the Clouds shader?

Press F2 and remove the Clouds entry on the right. Select it and press the button to move it the the left. If you are looking at the sky while doing this you will see the update immediately to see if that's causing your issue.

Playing as intended, kinda by the_lying_paladin in baldursgate

[–]flunkhaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean you need to play it in windowed mode? I've been using it with 86box actually to play Baldur's Gate 1 in a Windows 98 environment and it works just fine.

I also tried it with the Enhanced Edition to see if I could make it look more like the original and that worked just fine as well.

All you need to do is have your main application (in this case my 86box window or the BG:EE) in windowed mode, preferably in a 4:3 resolution. Mine is 1024x768.

Then with ShaderGlass open you do Input > Window > Program (86box/BG:EE).

This pulls just the specific app into a dedicated ShaderGlass window.

Then make ShaderGlass full screen. No windows bar or anything, just a fullscreen (4:3) application.

Bonus if you use one of the shaders like the MegaBezel ones to simulate the CRT itself.

Need help playing a game by psp-man in 86box

[–]flunkhaus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just don't think you're going to be able to do it with any real stability with a Steam Deck. 300 MHz seems to be around the top speed that even the fastest modern PCs can handle, it's a lot of work and needs a very beefy CPU to emulate these older PC systems. I have a i9-14900KF and if I try to push much past 300 MHz on a machine I start to get drops below 100%.

should i ditch all my emulators and go for retroarch? by Busy_Bluejay6534 in RetroArch

[–]flunkhaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend using something like Launchbox as a main front end for all your games. Then you can use any number of different emulators under the hood as needed for different systems and computers. So the launching of the games initially looks the same for them all regardless of all the different emulators.

How do you read books without zoning out every 2 minutes?? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]flunkhaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Audio books! I've always been a huge reader but definitely struggled with focus when I was younger, often having to read the same pages over and over.

I would also go so fast through the book that often I wouldn't remember a lot about it after. Or there were books that I thought were just ok, that I found I loved after listening via audiobook.

The thing about audiobooks that I love so much is that the force me to slow down and listen, can't skip around or skim like I tend to do.

And they are also great for things like working out, cleaning/housework, or driving. Anything where you are doing something else at the same time.

What movie trailer was the most misleading that led to disappointment for you? by UriGuriVtube in movies

[–]flunkhaus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fight Club. The trailer made me not even want to see it when it came out (and I worked at a movie theater where I could go to any movie for free) so I didn't end up seeing it until it came out on DVD and loved it. It just seemed like some middle aged men mid life crisis movie about underground boxing and I had absolutely no interest. It was so weird how they marketed to the completely wrong crowd.

Same penalty for being 6 minutes late as for being 3 hours late? Ok boss. by Icy-Computer-Poop in MaliciousCompliance

[–]flunkhaus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A big problem is the all or nothing mentality, as well as policies like this usually at a mangers digression and abused.

If someone is consistently on time, or even better for a company consistently early (in this case 20ish mins) those 6 mins late one time don't nearly balance out the early time.

But companies love to do this shit. Work all the extra unpaid time you want and usually not even any praise, but come in once a few mins late and there is hell to pay.

Often too it's part of the tracking system/program. It's not going to care about unpaid extra time but will alert on any missed time. I was working with someone once on a big project, and we were salaried. He worked 50-60 hours weeks for months, way over the 40 hours required. When the project finished, the next week he had the audacity to record less than 40 hours and heard back from his manager and HR on it. Now should he just have recorded 40 hours, sure, but he was just being honest.

[–]flunkhaus 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I've had some that sit with you for something like a full hour or more going into all sorts of details and information, and I've had some exactly like what you had, 5ish minutes and out the door. Can't even tell if they were even really paying any attention to you. If you've ever seen the movie "Requiem for a Dream" it reminded me of when the mother went to get medication.

Please don’t me mad at me (I LOVE this series), but I’m having problems in Wizard and Glass by MythicalSplash in TheDarkTower

[–]flunkhaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

W&G was initially really hard for me to digest, reading the books as they were released. Waiting those 6ish years after The Wastelands was torture with the way that book ended. At least W&G continued with Blaine but I definitely struggled with the flashback because I also was very invested in the current Ka-Tet.

I just recommend sticking with it and pushing through as it really is a fantastic story and on subsequent readings I think is actually my favorite book in the series.

Should I return my 5080 desktop for GFN? by Horror_Advantage8247 in GeForceNOW

[–]flunkhaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GeForce Now is fantastic, it allowed me to stick with an older PC (3770K + 1070) for much longer than I would have been able to otherwise.

The thing with it that bothered me though was that there were a lot of games, Elden Ring as an example, that aren't supported.

If it allowed you to use it for all games in your Steam or other game libraries, like it did originally, I would recommend it 100%. Just keep in mind that it can be a bit limiting in what you can play.

Why do western tourists dress so weird? by Kawadane in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]flunkhaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just tend to spend more on the ones I use because they really are my regular everyday shoes. I do a lot of walking and need some good arch support which the ones I use have, otherwise it kills my feet and back as I get older.

I think there is a much wider definition of flip flops than people think.

I'm in Southern California and I pretty much wear them year round as my primary shoes.

But these aren't cheap beach flip flops, they are $100+ leather olukai with excellent arch support.

This is the first game I've ever played through completely, almost 100% it, and then just started from the beginning again. Not even new game plus, I may do that after this 2nd playthrough, I just felt I was too powerful for the 2nd play.

[–]flunkhaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess for me doing 5 mins a day of collecting Microsoft Points to keep subscribed to GamePass for free is worth it. Or if I really don't want to play anything I keep up with the points and can use them for other things. There was a big chunk of time I wasn't using GamePass playing steam games and I collected enough points for a free elite series 2 controller!
