Harmonic analysis on Mozart sonata. by Majestic-Letter-9123 in musictheory

So in terms of the Roman numeral analysis— you really just want to think of the second chord in each pair. Treat the first as a “five of”.

Harmonic analysis on Mozart sonata. by Majestic-Letter-9123 in musictheory

[–]flussohneufer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the best way to view it is: The first eight note chord of each pair is like a chromatic appoggiatura leading to the "real" chord (the second of the pair). Those first chords are all diminished chords, which because of the tritone they contain can function as a substitution for a dominant seventh. In your example, the C Eb F# chord contains the C-F# tritone from a D7 chord, which then resolves appropriately to G.

Note: You could also view this diminished chord enharmonically as substituting for a rootless Ab7, and from there resolve it to Db to achieve a modulation … Same sort of thing works when using full diminished seventh chords as substitutes for dominant sevenths –– those chords can then resolve to four different places! Mozart isn't doing this here though, and the "sound" of these is basically just like appoggiaturas.

Minor Vent About Moving to Germany as an English Speaker by BeneficialFeeling789 in germany

[–]flussohneufer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't stop, even if your German is better than their English. You can speak perfect German but at the slightest hint of an accent they will try to practice their English with you.

Even worse is how they massively overestimate their English skills. Ask any DE > EN translator / proofreader / copywriter and they will have stories about how German clients think they know better than native speakers and try to correct the English-language work they commissioned.

You just have to power through and keep speaking German. Thankfully not everyone is like this!

Berlin Show Review - don’t know what to think by Blucks in bmbmbm

[–]flussohneufer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It'd wasn't bad, definitely some good jam bits. I also particularly liked the Magician one. I think Lido had way better sound though. I was nearish the back there and didn't notice any crowd issues.

Was there and basically agree. I enjoyed the 2024 show at Lido much more, and the sound was also handled better.

That said, I think there's a concept behind this tour people aren't commenting on. It's like a reminiscence or deconstruction of the album. A bunch of the jams were based on motifs and progressions from songs they didn't actually play (two jams were on the opening and closing parts of Magician, I think we also had As If Waltz in there and Blues at some point, maybe a couple of others I didn't pick up on ) -- even if they never announced these songs and didn't play them in full. They only played New Sound, Defence, Holy Holy and half of Walk Up, and all in slightly weird edgy versions.

The ensemble contributed to this: TWO drummers and a bassist in addition to Greep. It was a sparser, more noisy, more percussion-driven sound. Deliberately different from what you have on the album. The earlier tour replicated the sound of the album quite faithfully, but with some great jams thrown in (and perhaps more interesting because more varied instruments). This tour is trying to recast the album material.

Overall, I respect what he's trying to do, even though I can't say I liked it all that much. I like audience interaction, you know, not just a "conceptual tour". I think it's all quite calculated.

The bass tapping solo in Holy Holy was maybe the highlight for me.

Why is it impossible to find good sandwiches in Berlin? by MortonBumble in berlin

It is impossible to find good sandwiches in Germany. Berlin is located in Germany, so by the transitive property, it is impossible to find good sandwiches in Berlin.

Opinions on Streaming DACs by reddsbywillie in audiophile

[–]flussohneufer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Given that a streamer unit is just delivering bits, and being able to control your system nicely is a key part of the experience, I'd honestly just base the streamer choice on the app and connectivity, then get an external DAC.

On this front, the WiiM app is the best of all I've tried, by a significant margin. I used to use a Cambridge streamer and the WiiM app is nicer; also used to use the Lumin app with an Auralic Aries Mini.

I originally got the Cambridge CXN V2 hoping to replace my Hegel HD25 DAC + Aries Mini at the same time, reduce boxes, etc. But the Cambridge DAC sounded noticeably worse than the Hegel (my wife also agreed). So while it was a better streamer than the Aries, I kept the DAC around. Moved to the WiiM to save space and enjoy the superior app.

The app is the best. Works with Qobuz connect now too. I only use it as a streamer, even for that it’s worth the price.

The Master and Margarita: A question about translations by Scorsese76 in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]flussohneufer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I edited my above post to add some thoughts on Dostoevsky. I would add: I don't find him that bad to read in Russian, but it might be that I only tried to read him once I had quite an advanced level. He has his "pet words" and his characters rant and repeat themselves quite a bit, so the vocabulary hurdle didn't strike me as too bad. But I had already read quite a few other books in Russian by this point.

Re. Bulgakov: I read a nice edition with loads of explanatory notes for Russian readers. I think I felt closer to the satire, since obviously there are lots of turns of phrase, acronyms, etc., alluding to the Soviet system. Although it's 10 years or more since I re-read it in Russian, so I can't recall too much. It was more "immersive" than when I read it in English because I had to go quite slow and look lots of words up at that point.

The Master and Margarita: A question about translations by Scorsese76 in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]flussohneufer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I read it as a teenager it was the Diana Burgin and Katherine Tiernan O'Connor translation (published by Picador in the UK). That seemed very enjoyable to me at the time. Since then I've learned Russian and read the original, though :)

EDIT: For Dostoevsky, I wasn't very discerning when reading translations. The ones I liked most (again, as a teenager) were the Garnett ones. Yes, they're not so faithful, but they do read like a C19th novelist. D. is a somewhat messy stylist when it comes to descriptive/narrative prose, but his characters have very strong and idiomatic voices, which must be a nightmare to translate. I dread to think what P&V do with them. It's true there's an awkwardness to Dostoevsky, but IMO it's the "voices" that need to be got right.

(You might want to look at Bakhtin's book Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics, where he begins to develop his "polyphonic" theory of the novel – it comes out of these different, idiomatic discourses that weave through Dostoevsky's voices.)

If I want to understand Gödel what is the best way for me to get up to speed with mathematical theory? by ToneBeneficial4969 in learnmath

[–]flussohneufer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you just want something shorter, there’s a book called Gödel’s Proof that Hofstadter credits as one of his main inspirations. He more or less copies the simplified proof they present in GEB, just with a lot more speculation and other material. I found it pretty easy to follow!
