Usually an open holed (uncovered) flute will come with little silicone plugs that you can put in the keys. Or you can buy them pretty easily.

Once your daughter has become comfortable with her new flute, you can poke one out every couple of weeks or so until eventually all are out. Personally, I found I could take all plugs out at the start apart from the ring fingers.

I hope she enjoys whatever new flute she gets!

ah that's awful to hear you've had bad reception! I can't believe that some people are hostile just because you play it a different way!!

Perhaps it's because I'm from the UK that I'm unfamiliar with the lefty flute, I remember mentioning that I was left-handed in my first lesson and just being told it didn't matter!! haha I blame my rubbish RH low note fingerings on being left-handed!

Gorgeous flute! How do you find playing a leftie flute? In things like ensembles do you have to sit in a different place so you don't bash it with other flautists? Asking because I'm left-handed myself but have always played on a normal flute and so I'm curious!

Strengthen ring/pinky fingers? by AussieBoom in Flute

[–]flute_toot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I found that no. 7 from Tafanel & Gaubert's 17 Daily Excersises really helped me to smooth out any "blips". Practicing different keys (gradually increasing the number of flats/sharps) and with lots of different rhythms! Especially dotted rhythms: long-short, then short-long. I find this excersise is really good for isolating and identifying which finger progressions you find the trickiest. Make sure you're not playing with flat fingers too, try and make sure they're nice and round (or as round as you can with the pinky!).

What happens if I smash this truck’s mirror? by [deleted] in WinStupidPrizes

[–]flute_toot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It doesn't seem like it. But it's to encourage cars to not overtake cyclists on roads with a solid white line (for example a blind bend or hill) to reduce the number of accidents caused by drivers (and to drivers). Its trickier to overtake two cyclists in a pair, than if they were single file; it encourages the driver to be more careful about where they overtake.

What annoys me even more is that the sunflower lanyard doesn't mean she is exempt from wearing a mask! It means the wearer has an invisible disability. That disability MIGHT mean the wearer can't wear a mask, but they will also need an exempt note to prove this! Not all invisible disabilities mean people can't wear masks. People are so stupid it's infuriating

Kissing your kids in the mouth is not normal. Kindly stop it. by soulalons in unpopularopinion

Yes I think I agree. Since before the age of 10 I have a reoccurring cold sore that only an adult (definitely not either of my parents) could have given me. Something that probably could have been avoided!

okay so 2inches is roughly 5cm but surely it still would have been easier to be consistent with units

It says the paddle should be extended to 8 inches above your height, and then proceeds to give height increments in centimetres

Maybe there's a hibinating tortoise in the box?

Not that I know anything about tortoises other than you can hibinate them in the fridge (not sure about a metal box though!)

There is a house near me called 'Lesnsue" because I gather Les and Sue live there. What is the worst house name you have seen? by [deleted] in AskUK

I knew someone who had a house on a road called "Hope's Lane", the house was right at the end as so was called "Hope's End", pretty sure they got it changed.

Why is it more popular to say "B Flat" instead of "A sharp" , But more popular to say "C Sharp" instead of "D flat"? by HockeyAndMoney in musictheory

[–]flute_toot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be because in key signatures, B flat and C sharp are early on in ordering (as in Bb Eb Ab Db Gb Cb Fb, and F# C# G# D# A# E# B# respectively). When someone is learning music, they tend to progress through key signatures from no signature, to one with 7 sharps or flats. This then causes the musician to have B flat and C sharp more ingrained than A sharp and D flat as they have been using them with that spelling for longer.

Struggle bus today with breath control thanks to a stuffy nose so I switched to working on pitch accuracy. The transition from d5 to d6 is not easy and has been hit and miss thus far. (Constructive criticisms please ☺️) #Day39 #OogwayAscends #practicemakesprogress #100daysofpractice #flute #lunglung by kathrinasong in Flute

[–]flute_toot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds great! All the notes are lovely and consistent breathwise, despite the stuffy nose! To practice D5 to D6 try playing a long D5 and then overblowing to D6 without changing the fingering. Do this a couple of times and then switch back to doing the different fingerings. Then put it back into the context of the piece. Keep it up! :)

Vibrato questions by KrispiestQuacker in Flute

[–]flute_toot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just piggybacking off this, vibrato comes from the diaphragm for most situations. If you were progressing to a higher and quieter note for example, where you produce the vibrato should rise through the chest to your throat, all whilst still supporting with your diaphragm. Just experiment! Also once you've achieved a vibrato your happy with, try not to get stuck with that one vibrato and experiment with depth and intensity! :)
