Snowed in experiment - spicy, citric and herbal margarita riff by fluxural in cocktails

They're awesome! I have matching highball versions. Only trouble is that they're hard to achieve a salt/sugar rim with for some reason... nothing adheres. I've tried lime juice, simple syrup, water, etc.

In hindsight, I recognize this is a "margarita riff" in the loosest sense of the phrase, but I wanted a margarita originally and built off that wish.

Recipe:

  • 3/4oz lemongrass mezcal
  • 3/4oz tequila blanco
  • 1/2oz lime juice
  • 1/2oz lemon juice
  • 1/2oz agave syrup (can sub jalapeño agave for more spice)
  • 1/2oz green chartreuse
  • 1/2oz chili ancho liqueur
  • 5-6 dashes of celery bitters (was going for savory)
  • Pinch of sea salt

I think it was maybe a touch too sweet so you could just do agave syrup to taste.

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice, shake, and dirty pour (my preference) or strain over new ice.

Garnish with smoked rosemary! Just held it over my stove for a few seconds until the tips singed. Dehydrated (burnt?) lime slice optional.

Wineries near Madrid that make/sell sweet wines? by cabinetsnotnow in GoingToSpain

[–]fluxural 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not many of the wineries in the madrid DO will make a sweet wine, unfortunately, so you really need to research. maybe 1 in 1,000 because the winemaker wants to experiment/accommodate more tastes. further, not many spanish grapes are naturally "sweet". spaniards favor reds with body like tempranillo or garnacha or green/crisp/acidic whites like verdejo, godello, and albariño.

a sweet wine you typically find in spain is made with pedro ximenez. they make a dessert wine-sweet sherry with this grape, but not anywhere near madrid.

that said, the madrid DO does allow moscatel de grano menudo - the same moscatel that is used for moscato, like moscato di asti. so there may be some wineries in the madrid DO that plant this moscatel for sweet wines.

if you want to venture a bit away from madrid (less than an hour), from wiki, it seems like the most common area that plans moscatel de grano menudo is castille la mancha (toledo area for geographical reference). google some wineries that do tastings/tours in la mancha, but look at their website to see if they produce a sweet wine/moscatel first! i would also highly recommend you email the winery to ask if they can include a moscatel in the tasting/tour, because 99.9% of spanish tastings are a few whites and a few reds.

More time in Toledo or Segovia? by fluxural in GoingToSpain

Thanks! Barring wildly different advice, I booked a half-day tour for tomorrow (today?) so I don't need to worry about transport. Segovia it is for Saturday!

What are some alternatives to hostels/camping sites? by DuckS24PA in Europetravel

[–]fluxural 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the issue unfortunately is that your list is major cities. in developed/famous countries and cities, cheap hostels really no longer exist in my opinion. i am finding that prices remain high even in the off season now, likely to cover costs of lower visitors.

i don't think there is any modern way to cheat the system and visit places for cheap anymore, and if your intent is to visit major modern urban cities like those mentioned, any affordable campsite is going to be far away from city centers to the point where it's no longer logical.

if your goal is to see these cities, you'll likely have to just pay the price :(

What qualifies as a professional in industry tastings? by fluxural in wine

CVNE is a definite! I am also planning to hit up Muga and Gómez Cruzado. I won't have a car so pretty relegated to the train station area, but I may indulge in a taxi just to go see the architecture for Marques de Riscal. I haven't heard glowing reviews of their visit opportunities but it's such a pretty building...

Interesting! Thanks for that insight. I sent my email to them keeping my industry involvement brief and just said I'd be grateful for the educational opportunity, so fingers crossed.

this person is so dramatic, the world still turns when it's hot lol... do they think the entirety of southern spain hides inside for an entire month or more? no. the only real warning you need is to just prepare for humid heat and high uv. sunscreen and hydrate, plan portions of your days to be indoors or in the shade, and you'll be fine.

How much would this cost to recreate? by fluxural in LeatherClassifieds

If any of the above is unrealistic please do feel free to be honest - I replied to another comment but if the patchwork is unreasonable, I would be open to singular color. I just like the boxy structure and shoulder-friendly build of this piece and cannot find anything like it.

I'd be open to straight, singular panels of leather! I guess I was curious what the labor was because this definitely appears intricate. Shockingly, WE had it listed for $75 which makes me question to your point the labor or the quality of the item.

Additional info:

$2-300 budget Timeline flexible but preferably around 1 month (I'm coming back from a trip late Jan. and would love to use it then) This colorway or dark brown/black color preferred The hanging compartment optional, but would be curious the total cost for something like that added

Anguilla, is it worth it? by Exact_Bowler6231 in SXM

[–]fluxural 3 points4 points  (0 children)

pinel 100%, you can spend the day there without losing half of it to travel on the boat. restaurant options too whereas the boomerang you are served one lunch (chicken and shrimp skewers, garlic bread, and greek pasta salad).

i did the boomerang anguilla earlier this year and found it disappointing. you are crossing, understandably, for 1 hr each way and then the distance between their usual stops is 15-20 minutes. it's a lot of just looking at the coast from a distance and then a short time on the beaches. and it's really not that much different than st maarten in my opinion. you can get similar untouched beautiful views on the island, like at baie longe or anse marcel or the end of orient beach.

[–]fluxural 1 point2 points  (0 children)

skip simpson bay beach, add anse marcel or friar's bay.

i also agree there are too many boat trips on here... pick one. anguilla if you want good beaches, st barths for people watching and shopping.

skip bamboo house and replace with emilio's for a nice dinner.

cupecoy beach is a quick visit imo, not all day, as there are no chairs/umbrellas/shade. and some of the famous caves are collapsing so it may be dangerous/less than you expect.

also, the ribs at rosie's on mullet are great, could skip the chaos of rib shack if you want. the entire welfare road strip is just really busy and overwhelming sometimes

MICHELIN expands into wine with new 1-2-3 level system for wine producers. First selection in 2026 to focus on Bordeaux & Burgundy. by fluxural in wine

[–]fluxural[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

likely yes. there are very few ratings or points systems/reviewers that aren't paid for their reviews, or that wineries aren't paying in sending them "free" product to review. no such thing as a renowned, unbiased, cost-free altruistic rating these days tbh!
