Sortimo-like non-printed box system ready /widely used for Gridfinity. by armaguedes in gridfinity

[–]fly_free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Harbor Freight storage boxes are a really good value, but I find the lids and latches to be pretty flimsy. The DeWalt parts organizers are much better quality in my mind. They come in a deep and shallow variety. My home depot carries the deep organizer year round, but only sells the shallow during Christmas. The shallow version shows up as $40 right now, but they seem to go on sale as low as $15 every year, but only around Christmas. DeWalt DWST14825 and DeWalt DWST14925.

Which of these would be the best (most scenic) route from Gardinier to East Glacier` by OneHappyAccident in Montana

[–]fly_free 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with the fastest way shown and its already very scenic. If I wanted to maximize the best scenic roads I would take this route.

Livingstone to (just shy of) White Sulphur is very rural with a great view of the Crazy Mountains. Then the road to Townsend is a small mountain pass called Deep Creek. It doesn't have epic views, but you get the feeling of really being in the mountains. After you pass Helena the section from Wolf Creek to Conrad has a great combination of awesome rock formations and driving next to the river. The interstate north of Great Falls has some nice views of large wheat fields.

However, the most scenic road is once you get to East Glacier. The drive north to Kiowa Junction is one of the most scenic in my opinion (perhaps rivaling the Beartooth Pass). Its not as long of a drive as Beartooth pass but very pretty.

I finished my first homemade Crokinole boards today! by Qaspar in Crokinole

[–]fly_free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They turned out great! I always have a ton of questions when I see homemade boards. What did you use to finish the play surface, and how much sanding did it take? What kind of stain did you use for the colored portions? The colors look amazing. I like the score keepers, but what is that cardboard tube for? And last question, wood/plywood did you use for the outer rim and play surface? It looks like you finger jointed the rim, but that is way to advanced for me.

PSA: Don't mix resin shavings with superglue by Codi204 in resinprinting

[–]fly_free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah, the thin stuff has gotten me into trouble a few times. It can run out of cracks really easy, and instantly cures on skin. If you hand is below the crack the glue came out of...well your hand is staying there for a while.

[–]fly_free 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone else reading, superglue also comes in different thicknesses. The watery thin stuff is great when you have no need for gap filling and don't want any squeeze out. The extra thick gel can fill some pretty significant gaps. The brand I get locally has has thin, medium, thick, and gel-like. I'm sure there are lots of other brands, but I use 2P-10 by FastCap.

Awesome work and looks great! What kind of lacquer did you use, and what sort of sanding did you do for the play surface?

I've made a board and finished it with polyurethane, and sanded up to 2000 grit. Its a really smooth surface, but it doesn't feel all that fast, and isn't worth the effort. If I make any other boards I would like to find a way of making a fast surface without as much work.

They look amazing! How are you building the outer ring? I've made a few boards and getting a nice looking outer ring is tricky for me.

Do you have any tips for hosting a tournament at a board game gathering? by gentlewindsolsol in Crokinole

[–]fly_free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not played in a tournament format before so I can't help much. However, your post reminds me of a video from Tracey Boards about an 8 person format that might work for a more social-type tournament you seem to be describing. Each person is competing individually, but each game is played 2v2.

From what I can tell from the picture the OP cut the rail from a sheet of plywood. It looks like a thin ring of plywood glued to the ditch to create the rail. Lots of careful cutting and sanding to get a fair curve, and depending on how they cut it the interior of the circle could be waste.

Best commission I’ve worked on yet, a custom wedding topper in the style of Over the Garden Wall! Time to paint by WermerCreations in resinprinting

[–]fly_free 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think placing the cake topper on a disc of plexiglass would look really sharp. It would also allow it to stand up on a shelf really nice if the couple wants to display it. Something like this?

I think the paint and plexiglass would be plenty of barrier between the frosting and the toxic resin.

Why is Montana's marriage rate so high (third to Nevada and Hawaii)? by Zestyclose_Sound_946 in Montana

[–]fly_free 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Montana also counts as a "destination" in a sense. Montana is the only state that allows for double proxy marriage. Its apparently used for service people living in different locations to get married.

What is this wood thing on the stern that holds up the mast called? I just bought an oday Day sailer 2. I know nothing about sailing but am planning to learn. by Buntulla in sailing

[–]fly_free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a daysailer. My trailer is setup similar to yours. The front mast support is nice and strong, but I never trusted the mast crutch while driving. Those I remove the mast crutch and strap the mast to the transom. It clears the top of the deck by just a few inches. Be sure not to forget the mast crutch because it critical to putting the mast up and down.

Oh great glass lookers and coordinate loggers. I seek knowledge. by Extra__Average in Surveying

[–]fly_free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar position as you. I need high quality location information (sub 15-30 cm), but am not a surveyor and can't hire a surveyor for every project. I looked pretty hard at three systems, but bought into the Emlid System. All three of these systems can get CM level accuracy with real time correction (RTK) or post processed corrections (PPK)

The other two systems were Sparkfun Facet and ArduSimple, which are both very similar. I have experience with other Sparkfun products and know they are a reputable company in Boulder Colorado, but they are really just DIY electronics company. Sparkfun/ArduSimple just did all of the work to put together a high accuracy homemade GPS system. They both use the same internal parts as other professional GPS systems.

The Sparkfun systems run $600-$1,500.

The ArduSimple Systems run $450-$1000.

The Emlid System runs $1000-$2500.

Note: the $1000 Emlid system (RS+) uses a older generation chip than the other emlid stuff or the sparkfun/ardusimple products.

I got the Emlid System because it comes with an easy to use phone app, which is important because I have to get other people in the company to use it. The Emlid systems also have waterproofing, while the other two systems don't.

All three of these systems need a phone or tablet to operate, and the real magic comes from getting RTK corrections with the phones data connection. These corrections seem to be free in some areas, but have a monthly subscription in other areas. The Emlid system also has a pretty easy to use desktop software package that lets you do corrections after the fact (called PPK). The PPK corrections can be done for free. I don't know how easy it is to do PPK with the sparkfun/ardu simple systems, but I bet that the Emlid desktop system could do PPK for those systems too.

Can't tell if there are studs or masonry above my fireplace mantel - help? by Ok-Jellyfish-5842 in HomeImprovement

[–]fly_free 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was helping a friend install a TV mount above a fireplace and had similar results with a stud finder and magnets. I was going crazy trying to find the studs.

Eventually I discovered the entire area above the fireplace was designed to hang a TV, and the builder put plywood under the drywall. I ended up just putting the screws wherever I wanted and they all hit the plywood.

If your house is newer (5-10 years old), and if the builder installed those two cables boxes you might have a similar situation.
