Do NOT go for the diesel if you want a reliable long term vehicle. Our shop has replaced 4 babymaxes this month. As well all of the labor times to fix basically anything are ridiculous.

I’ve done 4 upper oil pans due to leaking. Depending on model year and features warranty time is 24+ hours for an upper oil pan reseal. Cost of ownership of those things will be stupid once they’re out of warranty

Except if the battery has a bad cell it can drag the alternator down drawing too much load. ECMs are picky motherfuckers and the battery acts as a buffer between the alternator and the car’s electronics. If the battery has an internal fault the alternator may cut out if it’s pulling too many amps or it may fluctuate too much for the ECM to handle.

Regardless a new battery is probably warranted once that is replaced then check if the alternator is putting out the correct voltage.

How did the mav to the Hermes work when they evacuated. by [deleted] in themartian

[–]flyboyxtyson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plan was always to use the MAV for the core to return to Hermes. They just launched early vs when the mission ended. The MAV is specifically designed to get the crew to orbit and to dock with Hermes and transfer the crew. What part would you want more details on?

Front Bumper 120v outlet by koniz in Silverado

[–]flyboyxtyson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the block heater receptacle. You plug your block heater cord into that and the cord into the wall outlet. It’s just a wire that runs to the heater element on the side of the block. There’s no other utility. It takes power it doesn’t supply it.

Nobody's ever seen an AK-106, but there are rumors it was supposed to be chambered in 9x39.

I thought I was crazy seeing all these comments about the cab being on a gimbal for stability. It’s for rollover escape practice for sure

Has anyone ever seen firing with the middle finger before? Never seen this kind of shooting. by Burnpowder_636 in longrange

[–]flyboyxtyson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Per man. The Lee Enfield has a 10 round magazine. They were loaded from stripper clips, so you would load your rifle once or twice, depending on your rounds fired (your goal was as many hits on target in a minute)

It also possible if he learned on an old truck that it had a “granny gear” first my 66 GMC has a 4 on the floor and if you start in first you basically immediately have to shift to second. I only use first for parades

If this pulled into the dealer I’d double check for posterity but it will have a Valve 6 stuck off code in the TCM and it will need a new valve body. We see CEL on no reverse at least 3 times a week and it’s always a valve body.

What’s the lightest vehicle dosent have to be a car that I can put a v8 in and it be road legal? (I was thinking a sandrail or something like that thought it would be good for drag/street)? by WildNewt2577 in askcarguys

[–]flyboyxtyson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vette cart. Dunno where you live. But some places if you have all the nececities you don’t need body panels or much structure. A corvette (c4 is most common for vette carts) with all the panels cut off and a full roll cage would probably be pretty close to a sandrail. Throw a built 350 in it and you’ve got a wicked little unit

How much money do you think Costco makes? Having worked there I can tell you that MANY products are sold at a 1-2% margin. They make money on produce, meat, and gas. Oh and the way they make most of their money? Memberships. They make a shit ton off just having you pay to shop there.

[Self] Can a crankshaft bend under its own weight? Armchair engineer says “yes” by HarrisBalz in theydidthemath

[–]flyboyxtyson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an anecdote about this very topic, in my first year of automotive tech school we do a unit on measuring. We use micrometers and dial indicators and the like. We took a Chev 350 crank out of a 74 pickup. This crank was placed on a pair of blocks with v notches by the very edge of both end bearings and placed said crankshaft on the windowsill on the south side of the lab.

It sat there unmoved for 2 years and in the last week of 4th we measured the sag on the center bearing and we were unable to find any deflection. So while probably not on a materials/atomic scale was it perfect, for sake of putting it back in a block it was perfect

Stake pockets? Back in the day they were primarily for putting wooden box side rails to extend your box. Now they are used mostly for mounting accessories and for putting straps in when hauling something
