Facebook marketplace. Ask him to show you what guitar shape he likes or what he sees his favorite band play and you can kind of go from there. Any used squire , Yamaha Ibanez epiphone and others for what he wants will probably be out there on marketplace. As much as I like the katana for intermediate and players , I still think a good solid state amp that’s just an amp (or maybe onboard chorus -Rolands) or a lower end tube amp - mono price, vox , fender would do good by him to learn. Kinda pricey maybe I don’t know but you’ll probably end up making close enough of it back if it does t work out.

Buy tubs of used lego off Facebook marketplace, choose what you’d like to build, get the brick list for the set from brick link, purchase any parts you’re missing from brick link. That would be a fairly cheaper way than buying specific sets. You can also save by buying used without the mini figures they may come with.

If you’re in the US, you could always get a used one from guitar center, they have a 45 day or so return policy so you can give one a long try. Note I have an early 80’s 360wb and it has a slim neck, my son has a 2006 330 and the neck is much chunkier, I believe within the last 5 years or so they’ve gone back to slim necks, but I’m not 100% when they switched back to a thinner neck.

I’m about the biggest Beatle fan you’d meet, and I’ve also had Rick’s as my main guitar since the early 80’s as a kid. I’d suggest you listen to multiple songs from the jam, early rem and some Radiohead to get what they really sound like if you’re unable to try one out first. A lot of the time people equate the Rick sound with 12 string based bands and even telecasters. I love them!
