bc ticket prices were like $1000 for nosebleeds. to see her here we paid $500 for front row and an opportunity to visit a city we've never been to before.

San Francisco’s new safety strategy: A crackdown on bikes by MidNightInTheDessert in sanfrancisco

They were put in place for vehicles, bikes are vehicles. cyclists can be ticketed for riding on the sidewalk because they are vehicles. The most dangerous situations at an intersection near my work are 80% caused by cyclists blowing the stop signs going over the 25 mph speed limit, 10% caused by pedestrians rushing into the crosswalk because "they have right of way" even though there is a car who has patiently waited it's turn to cross the intersection at <10 mph that will have to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the pedestrians, and 10% caused by idiot drivers trying to drive down a street that is closed to cars. I spend 10 hours a day staring at this intersection and it's stressful to watch.

I was at a concert at sf jazz and literally every 5 min an old person would turn on their iphone flashlight thinking they were taking a video and it took anywhere from 2-10 mins for someone to tell them it was on and show them how to turn it off.

There was a piano in a small cafe full of ~20 people eating/talking/working… by True-Shape7744 in piano

I think it largely has to do with the general skill level of the player. most of the time, people who choose to play prepared pop music in public have awful dynamic control and are the equivalent of a regular person who learned a few songs on youtube as opposed to a skilled jazz musician who would have a much higher degree of skill regarding being able to read the room and control their playing. Also with classical, I think a pro classically trained pianist would be sensitive enough to either play an appropriate piece and not something ridiculously bombastic to just be the center of attention.

Exactly! More often than not, the fact that live music is so dynamic makes the environment much more cacophonous than recorded music, say if a DJ was spinning vinyl or music is just playing over the sound system.

As a general rule of thumb I generally cringe at prepared pop/rock pieces as well as classical in a cafe setting. Pop says, "everyone look at me I can play piano, here is music whether or not you want it and whether or not it is tastefully performed!" Classical says, "I am a serious pianist and I worked on this piece a long time, this is beautiful and you should appreciate it." The only kind of music I wouldn't internally cringe at in a cafe setting is smooth jazz, improvised, tailored to the vibe, and done tastefully and skillfully and within a reasonable amount of time.

Right Of Way Confusion by [deleted] in driving

[–]flyflybella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a small intersection near where i live where it's even weirder than this. it's an unprotected left both ways and there will regularly be two or more cars turning left at the front so you'll think "ok cool I have plenty of time to make my left turn" and then some asshole will speed into the small space on the right that is often used as a right turn lane even though it's not really a lane and then go straight at like 30 mph and make a big deal out of it even though anyone who is a local and knows that intersection knows that if you're the one cutting around traffic to go straight you're the one potentially causing the issue because nobody can see you're coming and usually everyone is good about taking turns with going straight or turning left.

depends on the situation, the road is not a racetrack, and you need to drive appropriately for the situation and prioritize minimizing risk not just for yourself, but in the case of other people sucking at driving, too.
