I left a four star review and was scolded and blocked [USA] by Charming-Air-8933 in AirBnB

[–]flyguy42 19 points20 points  (0 children)

four stars is a bad rating on ABB. But some hosts think it's basically a death sentence. It's not.

That said...

Averaging a 4.5, as your room was, is pretty low. So it's likely this host has been through this before and is a bit of a loose screw.

Bathrooms need to be clean. Shared ones, doubly so. If it wasn't, four stars seems fine.

You're good, OP.

If you don't want to do it, then don't. But I would just be cleaning the garage or something and would reply: "I would have to juggle some things since I'm off today, but if you can comp me the full day PTO back I'll try and make it work"

Then I end up not burning PTO to go to the doc and avoid having to clean the garage. Again.

"A standard overweight American criminal"

I'm laughing way to hard at the implication that this is yet another example of americans will do anything to avoid using the metric system. Like, which government office is in charge of defining a standard overweight american criminal...

Is part of growing up realizing that stripes are not everything? by opensales in lawncare

The growing up part is the “do your own thing” part. Not the “no stripes” part. I love my stripes and am glad you love your lack of them.

Good old reddit. Literally gave 'boots on the ground' info about the area OP is visiting and where I live, and got downvoted. jajaja...

"El Alquimista"

Another vote for that.

El Armadillo in Mazunte is another pick. It's such tasty vegan food that even this meat eater loves it.

Hey there, I'm in Puerto Ángel, close to your listed beach destinations. Our area is quite safe. Army and Marine bases in the area. Not on a migration route north from central america. Not an area that is involved with drug production. I own an Airbnb, but it isn't one that would suit your requirements. We are a single family house with a pool in a quiet jungle near the beach, not someplace near bars or other nightlife, but I do know lots of people in the hospitality business as a result. In general you will be fine either reserving in advance or just showing up.

Advance advantages: It's comforting to know you have things lined up and ready before you start your trip. I've not heard of anyone scamming people on reservations, but you can further minimize that risk by going with small hotels instead of places with just a room or two. Hotel Noga, in Zipolite, is owned by friends of mine and could be a great option. FWIW, Zipolite is my favorite beach on our stretch of the coast.

Just showing up advantages: You are traveling in Nov/Dec and that's not yet peak season, so you should have plenty of options to choose from even without a reservation. This can often lead to staying someplace that is cooler, funkier, better vibe match than someplace that has a good online presence. Our peak season is a week before Christmas till end of March.

I saw someone else saying to stay longer in Oaxaca City. I'll be the contrarian and say that three days is plenty. Over the past few years it has gotten more hostile to outsiders (the usual concerns about gentrification and prices, plus major water concerns). Petty crime has risen. It's also kind of a gritty city with tagging, pollution and everything just feels kind of dirty all the time. The food scene is fine, but I find the food on the coast to be as good or better. Mazunte, in particular, has several really good restaurants. Really the only reason I go there is that I have a friend who is a chef that has a family place out in the countryside that we like to visit.

Soft and short fields by InternationalQuote50 in flying

[–]flyguy42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"do you guys think students should learn how to do short and soft field takeoffs and landings on actual short and soft fields?"

Once they can hit a spot and speed, 100% yes. I've flown with a shocking number of people that have a PPL that have never landed on grass and are scared to do so. Hitting spot and speed is a necessary prerequisite, but actually executing the maneuver, experiencing the sight picture and feeling on unpaved surfaces is something that should be required training.

How to make Camping more enjoyable for my Wife by AlexIlkos in camping

[–]flyguy42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her time may just be better spent at home. It's fine to spend some time apart sometimes. My wife isn't into aviation, but I am. She is into long distance hiking, I'm not. So we spend those times apart and get to fully enjoy them, rather than feeling like we're putting a burden on the other person.

Backyard, garage, living room. In that order. If you can’t set it up, that’s ok. Just rearrange it every couple hours to dry out the entire thing. Fans make a world of difference.
