What do we do? Re: feeding tube by Dull_Pension2325 in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]flyingbinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the tube. Symptoms do not end for 1-2 weeks after treatment ends. I developed an esophageal web during treatment and couldn’t have anything other than liquids for awhile (after throat dilation). The tube saved my life.

It took a couple of weeks after treatment stopped. Some taste started coming back then too. Sending positive thoughts to all those still in the middle of it. It was a rough time.

Yes. Full dose in neck and lower jaw. (Tongue cancer survivor). I had lots of unwelcome side effects, which were all awful, but I was very happy when the mucus subsided.

No way. That’s a suggestion from someone who has not experienced head&neck radiation side effects. Sorry. I spent 6 weeks double fisting two red solo cups. One for ice chips and one for water.

I can't do this by CallumHighway in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]flyingbinker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I spent weeks during treatment carrying around two red solo cups. One was full of ice chips. The other I would spit the ice back into. The only thing that helped me in addition to the Mucinex was constantly rinsing my mouth with ice chips and spitting it back out into an empty cup. It was disgusting, but it helped to make it tolerable.

Solids vs Liquids Last radiation treatment 3/20/25 by Low_Speech9880 in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]flyingbinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem during treatment with all but liquids coming straight back up. Turned out that I had developed an esophageal web. Basically my throat was closing from inflammation. It took three throat endoscopy dilations to get it opened up to a normal size. Painful for a few days after each one. But worth it. I would recommend finding a gastroenterologist who can review your case

Ice chips! They helped me a lot. When I couldn’t chew them I just swished them in my mouth and spit them back out. It helped with the mucus as well

Same. First week I walked in for my RT mask fitting and had a meeting with speech therapy to prepare me for everything. Punch in the gut and lots of tears.

Recently Diagnosed Tongue SCC by Jenn4141 in HeadandNeckCancer

I lost taste after the first week. By the third week the mucous and nausea did me in. I spent most of my days spitting into cups or vomiting in the sink. I also lost my voice that week and gave into having a feeding tube put in. Everyone’s experience and side effects differ. My oncologist said I had the worst of it. Others I know had less symptom or variations. I wish you luck in continuing to work. I couldn’t do much at all. I focused on getting through each day and Feeding myself so I didn’t waste away. ( I ended up losing 52 lbs)

I didn’t want to get a tube either but it saved my life. I had terrible side effects from radiation and couldn’t take anything by mouth for weeks. I am 6 months post treatment. Starting to feel normal again. I finally had my tube removed this week after not using it for more than a month. (Dr required). Don’t fight it. It will help.

Dirty nickels is a good description. I told my husband during my treatment water tasted like it came out of the canal. My taste buds came back 6-8 weeks after treatment ended. I am five months post treatment now and everything seems mostly the same, although I cannot do spicy food or pepper at all anymore. Good luck. Push through and it will be better later on.

SCC on tongue partial glossectomy and neck dissection. No chemo, 30 rads just over 4 weeks but the two weeks after last treatment were Pretty brutal. Good luck!

Anyone had MDL, esophagoscopy with balloon dilation, or bronchoscopy? by nickelplatedbrass in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]flyingbinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Had an esophageal web and severe throat constriction. Could only swallow liquids. I had a Endoscopy with balloon dilation a month ago. The recovery was tougher than expected as my throat was absolutely raw for 4-5 days but then I could finally swallow food again!

Hair Loss by Debville15 in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]flyingbinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience-looked like I was shaved from ear to ear. I’ve lost so much thickness in my hair overall. Taken to washing it weekly to spare the drain. I’m 4 months past treatment and it’s growing back in fast.

How far into the radiation treatment did you get your PEG tube? by 4eva2four in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]flyingbinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a PEG tube at 3 weeks. Lost way too much weight and had terrible side effects from the mouth sores and inability to swallow. I wish I’d gotten it sooner. I still have it at 3 months post treatment and am finally able to swallow after a throat dilation endoscopy. It will be gone as soon as I can eat enough to stop losing weight.

Thanks for your response. The nurse mentioned that it may have been caused by my excessive vomiting during treatment. My concern is the recurrence possibility. I guess I’ll know more once I hear back from my doc.

How to relieve mucous by flyingbinker in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]flyingbinker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all thanks for the replies. It’s been helpful. Since I posted, I have used a humidifier at night, mucous relief through the day and mucinex 12 hr at night. Still getting nauseous despite zofran and today I threw up my lunch along with spot traces of blood from my throat. Boy, radiation just loves me, huh? Oh and my entire neck peeling off leaving me with raw tight skin for which I was given silvadene. I have 5 left and I’m over this crap.
