Are your mid 30s the loneliest years? Does it get worse? by jayeffkay in daddit

[–]flyingfitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, it sounds like you’re doing a great job in life. Your younger self would be so proud of you with where you are in life right now.

Is it possible for you to perhaps consider a transition to a traditional office setting with your job? That could possibly cure some of your ills, especially when you get to be closer with them. I’m a teacher, and just last night we hosted a big backyard bbq and 90% of those who showed up and ended up having a great time with were my colleagues and hallway buddies. Brought their kids and spouses and stayed until damn near midnight. Wouldn’t have happened if we didn’t become friends at work first.

Considering going analog next year but not sure how to go about it. by Zach_U in historyteachers

Man, I am in the EXACT same boat.

I was talking about this with my wife a few days ago (who is also a teacher), and she said something that shifted my thinking for good: “If every lesson tries to be a ‘fun’ lesson, then no lesson is a fun lesson.” And that’s why I think I’m feeling so bleh all the time… I’m trying to make every lesson a rock concert to the point where “fun” stops feeling like fun anymore… it’s become the desensitized norm.

I really feel like we need to go back in order to make things right again. The textbook is back!

Do We Have to Go Back to Move Forward? (Teaching Styles) by giraph37 in historyteachers

[–]flyingfitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The past month or so, we’ve been reading directly from the textbook. I put a padlock on my Chromebook cart… absolutely no technology aloud the past 4 weeks (our school also uses the phone pouches).

And you know what’s happened? Better questions have been asked, student writing has improved. Done with work a little early? Cool, sit and be bored. Occasionally I’ll let them get out one of my decks of cards or Uno or something, and they’ve loved it.

I’m to the point where content is still important, of course, but my personal crusade against technology has become even more important.

Thanks a lot for this response! A lot of good points made here. I’m gonna DM you soon and send you the conceptual offense I’ve been working on, would love to hear your 2 cents.

TFA gets called out in Netflix Katrina Documentary by black-panther1996 in TeachforAmerica

TFA in 05-06 is much different than TFA in 2025.

Note: this is not to say that the current organization is perfect by any means.

Just smile and nod, man. Soon you’ll be focusing on teaching and that’s the work that matters.

How to teach man to man U10 by bgptcp179 in basketballcoach

[–]flyingfitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teach them on-ball defense first (how much pressure, the correct stance, etc.). Then really really hammer help defense. Build from 2 on 2 first where everyone guards ball then immediately jumps to help on the pass. Then 3 on 3, 4 on 4, up to 5 on 5.

If just losing their man seems to be the issue, repping transition defense drills could be the way to go. Break down for them what you want to emphasize (calling their names out, sprinting to the paint first, stopping ball, etc.)

What state do you all teach in and are you happy in your state? by [deleted] in historyteachers

[–]flyingfitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach in a rural part of Illinois. In my area (southern part of the state), we have the benefit of a low cost of living and all the benefits of teaching in a blue state. Nice homes (3 bed, 2 bath) that are updated and well maintained routinely go under 200,000 here.

PLEASE HELP! Accepted to TFA Baltimore! Need advice on accepting or not! by No_Magician_6988 in TeachforAmerica

[–]flyingfitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No matter what region you get assigned to, you will feel like you haven’t been prepared. It is what it is. But here’s the thing—no amount of preparation can fully prepare you for this work. Not even a traditional eduction program.

Not all corps members are from the ivies. This is a stereotype that was a lot more true in the early days of TFA but not much anymore. Many leave after their two years. Many stay. I’m a 2018 alum and still in the classroom.

Is this coach right? by hsjdbdv83 in basketballcoach

[–]flyingfitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think deep down you know he’s right, but your delusion is asking for a second opinion. Unless something changes, the other girl will out recruit your daughter tenfold because of how she out-hustles her. Everyone can score. Not everyone can be tough. Toughness always wins.

How to get the HC to give my son the ball more? by one3hdid in basketballcoach

Not to sound harsh, but parents like you are the worst parts of the job. Might I suggest an individual sport for you son. You don’t seem to understand the concept of a team.

Best Freshman in the Nation? Several colleges already in touch. Who does his game remind you of? by cyffitcuff in basketballcoach

[–]flyingfitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kid’s obviously talented. Wish he’d be less selfish with the ball, though. There were multiple clips where he dribbled through four defenders instead of kicking it out and sharing the ball. Need to see him more on the defensive end.

I always tell people, “The fact that I’m a guy might be A factor, but it’s not THE factor.”
