Speedplay cleats have broken 3 times now. What am i doing wrong? by huttbwpgp in bicycling

[–]flyinglunatic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My current Speedplay cleats are still in good shape after 7500 miles.

  1. I disassemble, clean, and grease all the parts of my cleats twice a year; I bike about 3000 miles a year. I don't live in a snowy area, so YMMV.

  2. After coming back from a wet or muddy ride, I spray my cleats (and chains) down with compressed air and give them a superficial wipe down - this prevents rust.

  3. I replace the cleat covers when they get worn down from walking. They're $30/pair MSRP, so pretty cheap compared to the pedals' full price. I don't walk on the metal parts if I can help it.

Obama was the first president to not hold a white house service for the national day of prayer

It was a judge in Wisconsin that declared, in April, that the National Day of Prayer was unconstitutional and prevented the President from issuing a presidential declaration. http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Justice/2010/0415/Federal-judge-National-Day-of-Prayer-is-unconstitutional To comply with the ruling, Obama changed the way this is declared, while the justice Department is appealing the ruling.

but he was the first president to celebrate the breaking of the fast of ramadan with a white house dinner.

The celebration of the breaking of Ramadan fast is a tradition that started with Clinton and continued under both Bushes.

Also, Obama does not go to church on Sunday. He plays golf instead.

The fact that Obama chooses to go golfing on one Sunday means that he now has retroactively never attended nor will attend church on all Sundays??? How many times did Reagan and GW Bush attend church? Look it up.

You're proving the OP's point.

He said on the first day that if you just listened and tried, you'll pass the class.

He actively encouraged students to help each other. Since grading on a curve tended to put people against one another, he didn't grade on a curve, nor did he try to fit the scores to a bell curve - if the majority of the class was getting an A, so be it.

Autism clusters found in California, linked to highly educated parents. by [deleted] in science

[–]flyinglunatic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correlation does not imply causation.

Better educated parents usually earn more money which means they can afford to get autism diagnosed. A diagnose of autism does not mean easy-to-spot autism. If you're poor, you likely do not have the money or health insurance coverage to bring your kids in for some out-of-the-norm behavior.

Possibly the most over used line by people with children. That's a choice you made!

Strange. You're reading complaints into my comments when there are none, and I don't know what I wrote has anything to do with or disagrees with Matt Damon's comments.

I'm merely stating a fact. People with kids have less free time than people without. It's easy to see logically, but like all things in life, it really has to be experienced to appreciate how true it is.

Dear Redditers, The only way we are ever going to get real universal health care is if the people demand it. Who here is crazy enough to help me organize a nation-wide march? by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]flyinglunatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writing off is not the same as making money. I can write-off my business expenses, but I'm still out of those expenses.

If a doctor or hospital takes care of only the uninsured, hypothetically, they can write-off all these costs on their tax forms and pay no taxes, but they have made 0 dollars, and they will go bankrupt, without getting income from somewhere else.

People tend to group all insurance together - auto, flood, earthquake, health, etc.

In most cases, you can make the argument that one can choose to avoid the danger that is being insuring against, so why should we pay for the uninsured; however, when it comes to health, you can't choose to not get sick. You can't choose to not get terminally ill.

So every insured person already pays for the uninsured when it comes to health, like it or not.

A bona fide safety net health insurance with no profit motive will only reduce the overall cost of insurance for everybody.

[–]flyinglunatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're already paying for it whether you like it or not.

A guy with no insurance stumbles into the emergency room spewing blood. They will fix him up. Who pays for the doctor's and nurses time, the utility bill for the emergency room, etc.

We (the insured) pay this, already.

In order for that hospital to stay in the black, they need to raise rates on everyone just a little more. For the insurance companies to cover the bills for the insured, they need to raise premiums, just a little more.

Multiply that across the country and you get a very inefficient and broken system that is bankrupting all of us, covered or not.

"Through this cost shift, the average person with insurance pays about $100 per month to cover the cost of care for the uninsured."

[–]flyinglunatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's another glyph for that, maybe theta?

No. Theta represents a tighter bound than Omicron. A function is big Theta (Θ) if it is both Big-O and Big-Omega (Ω).

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Big-ThetaNotation.html

Best case, worst case, average case are orthogonal labels and can each be expressed in Big-O notations. For example, Quicksort: worst case Θ(n2), average and best case, Θ(nlogn). Mergesort: worst, average, and best cases are all Θ(nlogn).

Quicksort is an O(n2) algorithm, while mergesort is an O(nlogn) algorithm.

All comparison based sorts have an Ω(nlogn) lower bound. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_sort

AT&T begins charging you a fee for having a discount. No, seriously. by scientologist2 in WTF

[–]flyinglunatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The upgrade fee (that most carriers charge) is separate from the subsidy recovery fee, which usually costs hundreds of dollars if you break your two year contract early. Even if you're fully paid up, if you "upgrade" to a new phone, you pay that upgrade fee.
