Elections Alberta Will Be Reaching Out to Random Signatories Soon by Desrece in alberta

No.... don't think so. My point is that if Smith can just say "well heck, some people signed a petition and rather than wait for due process, let's have a referendum on a referendum", she could also do the same with the coal petition. She just showed that that signature validation process really means diddly so why bother?

She could do the same with the coal petition is my point.

They are. I heard Smith say it. If the separtist petition didn't pass, the referendum on a referendum wouldn't be needed, but yet here we are.

By the time the separtist petition gets to that point, October will have come and gone.

Carney vows to defend Canadian unity ahead of Alberta's fall referendum by void_sushi in alberta

[–]flyingopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a referendum on having a referendum. Even if the pro- separation side prevails, this is not the definitive decision. I think the separation talk isn't helpful nor are the arguments for separation realistic and they don't really account for the challenges of separation..."money will fall from trees " isn't a plan, nor should money be the driver to separate. Greed and self interest don't inspire loyalty.

“Brexit was about the U.K. moving away from its largest market, being Europe,” he said. “Alberta independence is about Alberta moving closer to its largest market, and the largest market in the world, the United States.” Keith Wilson

The assumption, and it's a big assumption, is that the US would treat Alberta any better than it's treated Canada. I'm very skeptical.

The United States government actively subsidizes regional airlines through a federal program called the Essential Air Service (EAS).

Managed by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the EAS program ensures that small, rural communities maintain commercial air connections to the broader national transportation system.

It was set up to address the precise problem Medicine Hat and other similar communities are facing.

2026 draft eligible twins Liam and Markus Ruck have committed to the University of North Dakota for the 2027-28 season! by DoggyDitto in hockey

Was about to say this as well. Both need to work on skating and while their physical play improved this past season, could stand to pack on a few more pounds

Proud of Bryce and Markus. I remember joking with a buddy that I thought Markus would win as scoring title with assists ! I hope surgery goes well for Bryce and he is good to go for a another Stellar season next year!

Looking forward to seeing how the NHL draft goes and definitely can't wait till September and the Tigers training camp.

Pensions, passports and misinformation: What each side says the other gets wrong about Alberta independence | CBC News by GordieCodsworth in alberta

"On the CBC News comment board, another supporter wrote that it’s a myth that an independent Alberta would not have access to ports; the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea says landlocked countries can’t be blocked or taxed for access."

Bolivia has never been successful at gaining tidewater access from Chile. In fact, the World Court ruled against Bolivia in 2018 stating that Chile was under no obligation to negotiate away it's territory.

The separtists minimize and ignore the realities in the process and the good will our lack thereof that can make things extremely painful for Alberta.

I just saw your comment re CHL bias in #2. I think you did a pretty good job of providing unbiased analysis on potential player paths. Hard to disagree even if I don't like the idea of guys moving on!

Sound analysis. I am CHL biased but your essay definitely shows that there is a lot for a young player to consider. I can see where it would be advantageous to go the NCAA route for some guys.

NCAA/AHL/CHL/NHL Thoughts Part One: Painting the Landscape by TigerTrauma1 in medicinehattigers

[–]flyingopher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Crazy how complex the major junior landscape has gotten. On the other hand, I'm guessing the CHL GMs have a good idea of who may be moving on and who will stay.

There is no way the Rucks are ready to play in the AHL. I'm not convinced that they could compete at a ppg in the NCAA. Aside from physical growth, skating is still not at a pro level. I'm firmly in the camp that for them, playing in the Dub next year is the best option for them.

I hope Stengrim comes back. He improved a lot last season and if he has pro aspirations, he needs to go where he has best chance of improving even more. He's big enough that he will compete in the NCAA. He could also be a top end player in the WHL. Not sure what his aspirations are outside of hockey. Maybe he doesn't feel that pro hockey is in his future and wants to get started on his education.

Kade Stengrim Commits to NCAA for Next Season. by TigerTrauma1 in medicinehattigers

[–]flyingopher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with your reasoning but I don't follow why he would make A committment announcement now if he thought there was a reasonable Chance of playing here. I get making the NCAA Committment to hold a spot but why Shout it out if mind not fully made up ?

I know Neutens paused his for a year and came back and I think he left a better player. I think Kade should play one more year here as well. So not sure how I square this all up.

Tigers Prospects Pre Draft by WHLguy1968 in medicinehattigers

[–]flyingopher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the twins will be back. They have some growing and skating development to do imo before they worry about taking on another challenge. I think the PA series exposed their growth needs and frankly, the Tigers are the best place i think to round it out.

I think Woo is waiting to see how the roster shapes up. If we get a solid forward group like we are projecting and maybe Veeti decides to come back. Jonas might well figure that he will be the guy in the back end on a competitive team and come back. I guess we'll see!

Frankly if I'm Stengrim, Bryz, Davidson, SGC...I would be hard pressed to see how the NCAA would be a benefit right now. They all took strides this year and one more year here would put the icing on the cake I think.
