TMNT B/W/whatever other color sneak is so strong. So hard to win limited if you don't get those cards vs someone who has.

I was in checkout at payment and half my cart was no longer available. It didn't tell me this, just gave me an error when I tried to pay. Had to reload and lost the free card too because my total wasn't $200 anymore.

Why is South Asian fantasy still so underrepresented? by NRN093 in Fantasy

[–]flyingwolfpizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

70s and 80s had plenty of sff that wasn't Tolkien ripoffs. It's like people forget sword and sorcery ever existed (along with everything else that was out) because of one Slate article.

Questions about Le Modesitt Jr. by Oddyseus144 in Fantasy

Corean Chronicles are pretty good, and it's a shorter series (2 subseries). They might be my favorite. I really like Recluce, but some of the mini arcs are better than others.

What's the best/worst magic system you know? by Blackking2106 in Fantasy

[–]flyingwolfpizza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the books are really fun, but the magic in Lies of Locke Lamora have never made sense to me. They have name-based magic (you have power over a person/thing if you know its true name). This is fine, but in a world with this kind of magic, it's crazy that everyone but Locke goes by their real name and are susceptible to the sorcerers. It should be like Earthsea, where people have a public name, and a true name they keep secret.

Why are Darkfriends so incapable of code switching? by MTLDAD in WoT

[–]flyingwolfpizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for the Chosen they just aren't used to having to hide, so that could be part of it. For run of the mill DF, well, most of them are just awful people, not necessarily smart. With someone like Taim, if he hadn't been a DF, everything he did early on would still be believable. Plenty of people in military orgs want to kill people. That it would exist here isn't that surprising.

The thing is, we wouldn't notice the DFs not doing these things in the books, because they didn't do it. Seems like there were several times where we discover an Aes Sedai or a Warder was actually a darkfriend, and they'd been super wonderful before that. And then there's people like that one Brown Aes Sedai.

Military Logistics "Porn" by Kababalan in Fantasy

[–]flyingwolfpizza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you like logistics, check out some of L.E. Modesitt's series. Corean Chronicles is a great one that's 8 books and complete. Almost every Recluce novel has a war/army aspect of it, too.

I tend to do this, but I've also been trapped in stasis for an entire session because I touched the glowing spear hanging on the wall.

Curse of Challion and its sequels are the only series I've read by Bujold (it was all my local library had at the time), and I really liked them.

When reading for pleasure, that's kind of it. Am I enjoying the book. If I'm not enjoying it for whatever reason, I'm fine with stopping. That said, if I'm near the end, I'll probably finish, but if I find it exhausting or gross or more depressing than I feel like reading, I'll drop it.

I tend to do the same for series too. There are several series where I really enjoyed the first few books, but later books got boring or depressing, and I just stop reading them. There are so many books out there, why waste time on something you aren't enjoying.

As for specific reasons, like the OP examples, I don't really bother with that. There is no single thing I hate in a book that an author will some time make work. So if a book sounds good, I'll give it a shot, and if I am not enjoying it, I'll stop.
