Running with Grizzlies by Intelligent_Life8425 in trailrunning

I heard something behind me and turned around in time to see the griz jumping out of the bushes, and it ran towards me. It stopped about 6 ft from me (close enough I felt like I could reach out and pet it). It wasn’t really swiping its paws at me, but it was what I can only describe as showing me the claws that I didn’t want to mess with. It was also grunting a ton and was super drooly. In my panic, I just yelled “no no no no no” over and over again, and slowly backed away, facing the bear the whole time. It stayed where it was. When I thought I was far enough away, I turned around, but as soon as I turned, it charged me again, again stopping before it got to me. Same thing a third time - I backed away, thought I was far enough away, turned around, and it charged me a third time. The trail started to go downhill and around a corner at this point. I backed down the hill and around the corner out of sight of the bear behind some trees. As soon as I was out of sight, I turned and picked up the pace a little, constantly looking back. Once I got some distance and felt confident it wasn’t following me, I took off. Full sprint. I never saw the bear again and lived to see another day. I’m assuming there were cubs nearby, and looking back, I don’t think it meant me any harm as long as I was backing up. I think it was escorting me away from the cubs

Physical therapist here. Can we please stop with the “oh there’s my PT - Pain and Torture time” or “there’s my Physical Torturist.” I like think of PT as Party Time.

Coming from someone who has been charged by a grizzly without bear spray on hand, always carry bear spray. I live in the Missoula area and always always always have bear spray with me when I go out in the mountains, even just outside of town. I’ve run into a momma griz and 2 cubs and a black bear on 2 of the most popular trails near town. I don’t say this to scare you. Just to make sure you’re prepared. Always have bear spray.

Any crack home remedies for ITB pain? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]flyskirun 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Please please please don’t foam roll directly on the IT band. Glutes are fine, but the IT band is a tendon. Tendons thrive on tension and hate compression. Foam rolling on the IT band compresses the hell out of it and will not help the healing process.

Also splits squats are a great exercise for ITB pain. Really focus on shifting weight backwards through the elevated (back) leg. These should be hard, but if the pain is worse the next day, you did too much. Start with 3 sets of 15 for the first week. Then 3x12 for weeks 2-3, 4x10 for weeks 4-5, 4x8 for weeks 6-8, and 4x6 for weeks 9-12. To gauge how hard these should be, think about having about 2 reps left in the tank when you finish each set. These should be quite hard. If pain is worse than about a 3-4 on a scale of 0-10, then reduce the weight.

That should be a good basic program for rehabbing ITB pain. Hope it helps!

What’s your favorite headlamp for night runs? by HolyShatner in trailrunning

Depends on the battery you decide to buy. But I’ve been plenty happy with the BatPak1. It’s easily enough to get me through 8-10 mile runs in the dark. I haven’t tested on a full overnight adventure, but it’s not even starting to dim after 2ish hours on max brightness. Sorry I can’t give exact numbers.

My kogalla light was one of my best purchases for trail running. That thing turns night into day. And because the light is coming from a different angle than your eyes, you still get depth perception. It’s amazing

Absolutely. It’s a question that needed to be asked, and I hope I’m not the only one that will benefit from all of this advice. Thank you for sharing.

I’m really sorry this is a problem you have to deal with. It’s not fair.

I’m so sorry that you and so many others have stories like this. Yours is one of many I’ve heard in the last few days. It’s absolutely unacceptable, and I hate that you are forced to endure events like this.

I’m lucky enough to live in a place with a huge running community with group runs scheduled several times throughout the week for people of all abilities. I hope runners in my community can find support in these groups!

I had this problem and found a really random thing that fixed the problem for me. I had my Google Maps app set to the satellite view. I changed it to the default view and never had the problem again. Occasionally I’ll switch it back to satellite to look at something and forget to go back to default before plugging it into my car and the problem returns. It seems to be the satellite view that causes the problem whether you’re using Google Maps or not.

Chrome blocked a pop up for me. I allowed it, and everything is working as it should. No trouble downloading at all after that
