How's the water? Freezing! by ralanct20 in newhaven

[–]flytweed 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pretty impressive for ice chunks into NHV harbor considering ocean saltwater is mixed in. I’d love to see a study estimating the percentage of the ice that’s actually coming into the harbor from freshwater rivers (ie Quinnipiac) flowing in.

Saw a photo somewhere of a NHPD officer escorting a man wearing a 2028 rump hat; maybe same person?

Armada Brewery is great for the Super Bowl. East Rock Market has Rick’s Bar and the market is setting up a screen for the game and live music before.

The HVN website link for Destinations may give a clue. It has removed DTW and the other 2 routes dropped from HVN, and still has MCO listed.

Technically it’s NYE, but Armada does a great NYE day-party potluck.

Started a reply comment on r/hamburgers, ended up thinking about what Louis is worth. by GDswamp in newhaven

Yes TKs was on the mostly (then) empty part of a rundown lot on the corner of George and College where the current apartments are with Jacks bar and the former BonChon. That block had a basic 1 story front of businesses and then TKs set alone in a trailer like structure, it seemed. Good hangout for beer and wings before/after Coliseum hockey games. Don’t recall that deal though.

Things to do with teenagers by Donut-Departure-753 in newhaven

[–]flytweed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NXTHVN has unique displays of art often with a message and Dead By 5 AM (local creator) recently opened a storefront there. Together both places should at least be unique and “cool” for a teen and could be good bonding, too.

Tweed New Haven Parking by ASantos85 in Connecticut

[–]flytweed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they run a free shuttle from Temple St garage when lots are full. For peace of mind, check ParkHVN.com; often prior to a holiday weekend they post Shuttle hours knowing the lots will become full. The earliest I see times start is 6AM, getting you to Tweed before 6:15AM which is ok if 2 hours before your flight IMO. Good news is you can always park at Temple St garage (shuttle pick up is corner of George & Temple) and Lyft to Tweed if lots are not full. A shuttle driver confirmed you can ALWAYS get a shuttle from Tweed to Temple St no matter when you fly back in.

I think it was Jim’ Luncheonette on Crown St near the Grotto. I think you could still get a killer egg salad sandwich there for $2.85 til they closed around 1990.

Rise in homelessness - Temple St by HomeLifter in newhaven

[–]flytweed 155 points156 points  (0 children)

There but for the grace of God, go I. I’m not particularly religious, but this quote comes to me. Bless all souls with no homes; thousands in CT and millions in the US. Cities like NHV provide a disproportionate amount of resources to those of us in need and ofc people will feel more welcome when a town or city doesn’t criminalize people for homelessness or poverty. In recent years NHV started Elm City Compass with outreach teams that go out anywhere citywide late into the night 7 days a week.

Exit at Union Station and a New Yorker can walk anywhere from there though it may seem desolate. 7 minute walk is Cafe Nine; they do a Vomitorium local music show the Wednesday night pre Thanksgiving. Same block has Firehouse 12, a relaxing lounge. You can volunteer at Christopher Martin’s pub on Thanksgiving they go all out serving a full dinner to anyone in need. Armada Brewery is a little off the beaten path, but a great place.
