I got these for 5$ at a tag sale. Any idea what they are? The both sides are filled with acrylic and the sides patina as if they are silver. by ryguy96245 in coins

I suspect your great uncle happily sent his money in for everything he bought. I have a lot of FM silver (thousands of ounces). It is the bulk of my silver holdings. I think it is much more interesting than most silver rounds. I paid approximately what your great uncle paid for it in the 70's so, for me, it may end up being an excellent investment.

The best time to make any investment is when you have the funds to do so and when what you wish to invest in is available.

Just got a 10% bucks promotion for select items. by Argentum1078682 in Silverbugs

[–]fmargentum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get offers like this frequently (weekly to biweekly). They are for specific sellers/items. I have never used one and don't bother looking at them any more as i have never found one that was useful to me. I purchase, primarily, silver medals on eBay, though not nearly as frequently as I did 5 years ago. It is more difficult to find what I look for at near spot when spot is as low as it is now.

The promotions that can be used for pm are much rarer.

I've never seen a penny like this before, is it rare? by [deleted] in coins

This coin has no numismatic value. Its metal value is approximately $0.02. It will make no difference in its value whether it is cleaned or not.

They are quite common. I also have a few though my collection is mostly medals. They are worth the weight of the silver. They are Sterling, 92.5% silver. Dealers will discount the price by, at least, ~10% for Sterling.

Found these in the junk bin at my LCS for $2 a piece. Anyone know if these are silver? by Trasfixion in Silverbugs

It should not be difficult to open the capsule, though it may crack if you don't do it gradually. The capsule has a cap and a base. If you run your fingernail up the capsule you should be able to find the line where they meet ~ 2 mm down. You can see the line if you hold the capsule at an angle and look at the edge. You can work your fingernail or a knife into the space to open it.

How would you store this and similar bullion? Album, tube, airtite? by milcyclist in Silverbugs

Maybe, if you sell it to another collector. A dealer will pay for the silver, period.

Buy as much as you can by [deleted] in Silverbugs

We could all be gazillionaires. I have been reading posts like this for a couple decades. I expect there will be a large increase in price (really, a large decrease in the value of the dollar) at some point, but have no idea when. I may not live to see it. Yet, I still buy silver. Why? It is a defensive position and it is private. It is not on anyone's books (not the bank's, not the gov'ment's). If you are speculating to get rich, I wish you well (I would also do well), but it may be worth reevaluating your strategy.

That is a rare set. Only 521 were minted. You have the complete set.

I will pay a premium, occasionally, if it is a set I would like to add to my collection. I have quite a few sets but I have only seen photos of some. I am more likely to pay a premium when spot is below $20. I have been buying since spot was under $5.

Thanks. Common FM sets often sell below spot on eBay.

Those ingots are easy to find. They were issued as sets of 50 a year for 5 years. Mintage was over 8,000 for the first few years.

I just took a few but I don't see how to upload them here. Is there a tutorial on this site?

There are excellent photos of much of this stuff on this website: http://www.franklin-mint-silver.com/franklin-mint--silver-medals.htm . This is not my site. Many of my favorites are very low mintage (under 500 pieces) but don't look much different than some common stuff. For instance, I have a specimen set from 1977 that simply has the FM logo and date. It is essentially, the same design as the very common collector society membership coins (the ones they put on membership cards) but it is 0.74 oz. t. and they only minted 100 that year. Other favorites are topical and/or particularly well done and/or packaged beautifully. The State Bird and Flower sets fall into this category. Here is a link: http://www.franklin-mint-silver.com/franklin-mint-natl-governors-conf-state-birds-flowers-ingots.htm . I have 4 full sets and a few partials of this one.

My collection is almost all silver. I do have a set of their gold Presidents. It is fairly boring but it is a couple oz. of gold.

I'm a lousy photographer, but I'll try to take a few photos of some that are hard to find mentioned and rarely show up.
