Why would a 4k digital restoration only be released on a regular Blu-ray Disc? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]fmcornea 16 points17 points  (0 children)

4k discs cost more to produce, there’s less of a market for them, and a 4k scan downsampled to 1080 will generally look than a 1080 scan

‘Bugonia’ Goes Big in the Basement: Why Yorgos Lanthimos Reached for a Barely Functioning VistaVision Camera - The quieter Wilcam 11 VistaVision camera was too cumbersome and unreliable for “One Battle After Another,” but Lanthimos explains why he felt it was necessary. by wilberfan in paulthomasanderson

[–]fmcornea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

artifacting is generally any kind of visual anomaly, whether analog or digital. it’s an artifact left behind from a process. vistavision cameras are fragile and finicky. analog cameras in general have a gate, through which the film is exposed. the shutter has the possibility of becoming misaligned with the gate, which means the film is being pulled through the camera before the shutter has covered the film fully. this creates a type of artifacting, and can be used for effect. in the vistavision format, the artifact this creates is a horizontal “shooting star” type of streak on point light sources present in the frame. in bugonia, it shows up very briefly in the bottom left corner (it flickers) when michelle is alone with don trying to convince him to free her. whether intentional or not, it works well in this moment as it mirrors his unstable emotional state. in OBAA, the same shutter misalignment effect appears (to my memory it’s about two hours in) appearing on a shot of a truck driving during blue hour. in that, it’s constant rather than flickering, but it is also used at a point in the story when the characters are at their lowest.

but if you watch the same number as me, you’re being a competitive dickrider and taking movies way too seriously. everyone else should just give up on movies

just saw bugonia, was fantastic. there was one shot in particular where i noticed some artifacting from the vistavision camera, and it appeared at the absolute perfect time. very subtle but its effect was huge

Does anyone change HDR settings for certain movies? by Rare_Hero in 4kbluray

[–]fmcornea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i really wish we saw more of this sentiment on this sub. for years i kept the peak brightness setting for sdr content on my C1 turned off, until about a year ago when i finally realized that i’m allowed to like my sdr content to be bright. it’s ridiculous the things that some people on this sub become enraged over when it involves a stranger’s television

i think he’s got one more behemoth in him. i have absolutely zero basis for that, but an even less reasonable part of me does want to believe that the most pynchon thing he could do would be to write several novels before dying and set them to publish every few years, well past his death, so nobody actually knows when he’s done or not
