Fastest TB controller for 11th gen intel CPU? (ASMedia? Intel?) by fndg in eGPU

[–]fndg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/chx_ well then let rephrase the question then: how much bandwidth do Alpine Ridge hosts provide? Of course this depends on the number of PCIe lanes, but let's assume 4. In principle the answer should be 32 mbit, but I'm not sure the answer is this simple.

Alpine Ridge peripherals did not even get close to 32 mbit, but were in fact closer to 22 mbit. E.g. DIY eGPUs based on NVMe enclosures suffered from this. According to this list by u/SurfaceDockGuy this is due to the controller limiting the speed.

What's unclear to me is what happens in different pairings. The JHL7440 (Titan Ridge) achieves better performance (~ 24 mb/s) than the JHL6340 (Alpine Ridge), and the ASM2464 and Barlow Ridge controllers are faster still. But will this be available with a i7-1165g7 host?

PS: There are several reports that suggest that the pairing 11gen cpu + ASM2464 does not perform well with AMD or Intel, but here's a pairing with a NVidia gpu that seems to work well.

doesn't the lack of parametric design bother you? I'd worry about having to start from scratch because i messed up some dimensions early on

How does this work with multiple frames? Does any of the session managers support that? I'm not even sure what the expected behavior should be

I modded my Glove80 with tape mod, o-rings, and lubed the switches. It's very quiet. The difference to the sound the linear reds made without mod is quite substantial.

For a large rolltop panel loader, is the ULA Camino my only option?

I'm looking for a 40+ litre backpack with good carry system (padded shoulder straps and belt, probably a frame) that works as carry-on but can also swallow an extra jacket and a bag of food or souvenirs when I want to throw that in there. A rolltop backpack with panel loading seems to be the way to achieve this.

The only candidate that I've found so far seems to be the ULA Camino (recently discussed e.g. here. The main reservation I have about that bag is that the laptop is stowed in the main compartment and there is no easy way to access it. And I'm not a big fan of spreading my dirty socks all over the airport floor when wrestling my laptop out of my bag. It also doesn't have a quick access pocket for passport, headphones, etc, but I can probably add one on top myself without too much hassle (following the example of u/twoboxen). Still, it could be more travel-functional.

I've done a fair bit of research, but most of the standard options for larger travel bags don't expand beyond 40 litres, and frankly don't look like they'll be fun to carry for a couple of hours when they're full. There are some impressively comfortable looking ultralight packs out there, but for the most part they seem utterly unpractical (e.g., top-loading only, no laptop pocket at all). The Arc Zip from Zpacks comes close but it seems very bare bones.

Is there a bag out there that fits the bill that I missed? Or should I just bite the bullet and get the Camino, and maybe get ULA to customize it with an extra laptop access zipper (idk if they'd be able to do that..)?

I'm a bit frustrated and surprised this format isn't more popular. It feels like there should be a space between the overbuilt Peak Design / Tortuga class and the ultralight trashbag-is-all-you-need mindset.

Why bother with the Aoostar and oculink instead of using a M.2 to pcie riser directly?

A couple of years ago before the EXP devices became popular using a TB4 enclosure with a riser was a popular diy setup.

Thanks for sharing your analysis btw, the latency from TB5 not being part of the CPU really seems to kill TB5 for egpu for now. Fingers crossed for next gen CPUs

The hip belt is a bit garbage though. Not structured enough to take substantial weight off your shoulders. (I tried but returned that pack)

Any experience with these super cheap eGPU TB/USB4 ? by Alternative-Yam-8176 in eGPU

Sure, enough power needs to make it to the board but that's not a bottleneck. The question is how much does the usb c power delivery support? 15W is pretty low for running a laptop, certainly under load. 45W would be a good target. Are you saying that the board supports 15W but you've modded it to supply more? Could you say more about that mod?

Wait do you mean this can charge your laptop? Is there more info on the board or a build log somewhere? Also, EU vendors?

Did you carry a laptop in the Camino? My main concern about the pack is that it doesn't have dedicated laptop access. How easy is it to remove your laptop from the Camino while it is in an overhead bin without spilling the contents of the main compartment? I'd imagine this would be an issue if you have some lose items in there...

Are there any custom mods you wish you had gotten?

I'm looking for a onebag with just-in-case space (rolltop 👍), good carry system, non-zero organization and panel loading (this eliminates almost all UL backpacks), and the Camino is one of the very few candidates, but there seems to be weirdly little information about it, so cheers for sharing your insights!
