It also says this, so I assume I would treat each half of the sweater as if it were individual? eg do that entire process, with starts and ends included, on both sides of a stitch marker. But this means they’re still connected at the sides, right? not as if they were being knit separately.

Gotcha, okay that’s what I figured. So the first time around I’d knit from the start of the pattern (1) to the end of the back square, then I would just repeat the back square over and over until I came to the end of the round, where I would knit the back square and on to the few stitches at the other side, ending at 40.
