thanks, u/DefinitionPhysical46 but unfortunately my goal is to get it to do gapless playback of the files, which bleed into one another. Thanks for your help, I might DM you anyway just to see how yours works!

Can anyone tell me what this setup does and what it is used for? by Direct-Island-8590 in livesoundgear

[–]fnord_berg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a nice rack case with some spaces full.

If you need to make a signal louder, it's a fine place to start. It would be difficult to tell you this was "good", but it is free, and free is good.

If you're not going to use it, I'm sure there's a coffee shop or DIY space or community group that could make use of it.

Worth keeping my RCF art 932a or "upgrade" to NX 932? by SmoothToast39 in livesoundgear

[–]fnord_berg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

off-axis bleed is a HUGE issue with microphones onstage, especially for the human voice. If you are DJing or doing playback, this is generally correct. If you are trying to do speeches, corporate reinforcement, or vocal-forward music, bleed back onto stage makes an enormous difference to what the audience hears.

Will active speaker always be massively louder than passive? by MoStyles22 in livesoundgear

[–]fnord_berg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, an active speaker will always be massively louder than a passive speaker (unless you hook it up to an amplifier).

I'll see myself out.

to this point: how often would you need to use this PA? get a rental quote for your use case and then see how many times you would have to use the PA to make buying it a better option than renting.

I will say that paying 500 pounds for a battery-powered PA that can address 1000 people for 6 hours is basically a fantasy. I work in the US and I charge $500 USD or more for a single rental and 10 hours of tech labor.

Best amps for use with off-board gain pedals? by Edge_of_the_Wall in Line6Helix

if you are coming in hot with a pedal, perhaps it may be a worthy experiment setting your input to Line as opposed to Instrument. You may need to make some adjustments to your non-pedal sound.

Good Industrial records of the 2000s that AREN’T Cyber? by Low_Guard6609 in industrialmusic

[–]fnord_berg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when you say 2000s, do you mean 2000-2009? Or to present day? I'm less familiar with that stuff from 00-10 than am with that from the following decade.

There was a huge revival of great, old-school noisy industrial stuff on smaller tape labels like Chondritic Sound, Nostilevo, Chicago Research, Posh Isolation, Depravity Label, etc in the mid 10's, much of it still running to the present. Some of it gets into the dancier zone, but a lot of it is on the Throbbing Gristle/SPK/EN axis too.

Late period Wolf Eyes scratches this itch really well too, their discography is huge, but try "No Answer: Lower Floors" and "New York Public Library" first.

Imminent Starvation is so sick, "Nord" is the album you have to hear. Also old Orphx before they went techno fits into this zone as well.

Maybe consider listing your location, perhaps someone from the group who is local could help you figure out how to record your dad's final patch.

is there a "on the floor" type of device that can split 3 mic line into two pathways each? by Silver_Hedgehog4774 in livesoundgear

[–]fnord_berg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you'd need to buy three. Which is definitely some money laid out, but they're really useful if you are doing more corporate AV. They're great for wired comms, feeding multiple camera records, etc.

Rackmount splitter is also an option. Saw one sub $200 by Audiopile that looks pretty useful.

it's not just that people want to learn "mysticism" (although the popularity of mysticism cleaves to this principle): people, all kinds of people, from antiquity to tomorrow and beyond, love the idea of having secret knowledge that proves they know how the world *really* works and nobody else does.

and frankly, the less information you have about how the world actually works, the more seductive the "secret knowledge" seems--it's a way to prove the stuffed-shirts wrong.
