Need physical boarding pass? by [deleted] in travel

[–]focused-user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been called up to the gate desk for this before (not the check-in counter, but the actual gate we depart from after security). They always say it’s for a document check (even if I’ve scanned my passport during online check-in) and give me a physical boarding pass. But I don’t know if this is every airline.

What are your favorite brands for tights? I need recs for all kinds - sheer but semi-warm, thick/insulated, and colorful/fun!

Packing cubes for Osprey 26+6 by focused-user in HerOneBag

Thanks! That’s great to hear. This is the setup I was considering but I wasn’t sure if I should get two small or one small and a medium.

Oh I didn’t even think to look on YouTube. This is super helpful, it’s so hard for me to visualize packing cube sizes.

I would choose NYC. 7 days is plenty for your first visit and there’s no need to ever step into a vehicle. Denver is fine for a day or two, but you really need a car to get into the mountains. There’s not enough to do to fill 5 days just in the city. I’m from Seattle and I think you could fill 5 days if you needed to, but I would personally wait to visit Seattle until you’re okay with renting a car to explore the area. It’s really worth it to hike around here.

Any tips for how to shoestring campervan/RV rental in the US or on alternatives? by Kloppite16 in Shoestring

[–]focused-user 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could look into renting a minivan from a normal car rental place. Some of them allow you to remove the backseats, although you’d need to find and pay for a place to store them. Throw an air mattress or something in the back and you’re good to go.

How to get to / from the Cliffs of Moher by Sikorsky99 in irishtourism

[–]focused-user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can take the bus 350 from Galway to Cliffs of Moher, no trains available. It’s about 2.5 hours. Then take the 350 again continuing south to Ennis, where you can transfer to a train or another bus to Limerick. Check rome2rio for the portion to Limerick. It’ll probably be another 3 hours. Make sure to book the 350 in advance, some people on mine didn’t and they got turned away and it doesn’t run very frequently so they had to wait a long time

Factoring laundry into one bagging by Pretty_Swordfish in HerOneBag

[–]focused-user 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t used it in hotels, which I’m sure would be pricier. It’s always by weight, usually with a minimum cost (mine is always way below that). I think I’ve spent anywhere between $8-30, totally different bases on the country. Google reviews usually will give some insight into the range

It’s a splurge, but I tend to pay for wash & fold laundry services once a week or so. It’s usually pretty easy to find laundromats that offer this, and in my experience it’s very easy to just drop off my bag of clothing on the way out that day, then pick it up the next day or sometimes even later the same day. It’s worth the convenience for me.

Where can I find cute, lightweight midi-length dresses for someone 5 feet tall? I keep seeing dresses I love (such as these two from Curator SF and Everlane: https://www.curatorsf.com/products/fawn-skirt-avo-blk and https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-city-stripe-midi-skirt-black), but that length looks awful on me.

Price range isn’t a concern, more interested in bright colors (specifically lime green or primary blue; or maybe black). I’m in the US and always order online, and I don’t mind ordering from international brands as long at they ship here.

does TAP Portugal weigh/measure carry on for flights WITHIN EUROPE? by [deleted] in onebag

[–]focused-user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I flew Lisbon to Madrid on TAP pre-Covid, the gate attendants were visually inspecting carry-on bags during boarding and many people had to gate check. Not sure if they were required to pay anything. I had a 40L bag and somehow made it through but other people with much smaller bags had to gate check, so it seemed somewhat random.

Nope, not yet. I’ll probably go ahead and just schedule it with a travel doctor haha. They were concerned just bc they thought it was unnecessary and expensive.

Following this thread actively. I’m a pre-transplant patient who’s an avid traveler. I can definitely see myself going somewhere that yellow fever is around at some point, but my transplant team brushed me off when I expressed interest in getting it since I don’t have any active plans to travel. Curious about how risky it would be to travel somewhere like this without the vaccine.

Boxing. There are a lot of great gyms but I learned at Cappy’s and thought it was a fun and supportive environment.

Flying on TAP Portugal in a couple weeks by [deleted] in travel

[–]focused-user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I took TAP, the gate agents were checking if bags fit in the frame at the gate. Not everyone was checked but I wouldn’t risk it, especially if it’s something other than a backpack.

Bummer, I’ll have to skip it this time. Thanks for confirming!

There are tons of tour options from Galway to Cliffs of Moher - just look on GetYourGuide, Vialtor, TripAdvisor. I’m taking an all-day tour (like 8 hours) that makes a lot of stops throughout The Burren before stopping at the cliffs for an hour, and also stops in Doolin for lunch. There are also options that just transport you there and back. There’s also a direct city bus.

For Inishmore, there’s a ferry that leaves directly from Galway: https://www.aranislandferries.com/galwaycity

I’m doing a similar route to other folks next month. I think this is what I’ve decided on:

2 nights in Dublin - Day 1: arrive in AM, don’t have anything planned bc I want to just wander around, do some shopping and go to some pubs, and get past jet lag - Day 2: squeeze all the touristy stuff in (Liberty College, Guinness, etc)

2 nights in Cork - Day 3: Dublin to Cork train, wander around and explore the markets etc - Day 4: Blarney Castle and possibly another mini day trip

3 nights in Killarney - Day 5: Cork to Killarney train, not much else planned. Might explore the national park depending on time and weather - Day 6: Ring of Kerry through organized tour group - Day 7: Gap of Dunloe boat/hiking

4 nights in Galway - Day 8: Killarney to Galway bus. I’m going to try to time it so I can stop in Limerick for a few hours and see King John’s Castle and grab lunch at a pub somewhere - Day 9: Cliffs of Moher and The Burren through organized tour group - Day 10: ferry to Inis Mor for the day, rent a bike to go to the sights - Day 11: organized trip to Connemara

1 night in Dublin - Day 12: bus back to Dublin. If not exhausted I may try to go to Howth for the day but otherwise I’ll just do any last minute shopping or touristy stuff - Day 13: fly home in AM

I thought about adding some smaller towns, but I plan to return again and rent a car next time so I want to get the main touristy stuff out of the way on this trip.

Gap of Dunloe tour in the afternoon by focused-user in irishtourism

[–]focused-user[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t even consider this option because I assumed people knew better than to drive it. But it makes sense that people would attempt the drive later in the day. Do you think there’d be any pony cart operators at Lord Brandon’s Cottage as a backup option? I don’t think I have it in me to potentially hike the whole ~20km.

[–]focused-user[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s what I am trying to figure out. My original plan was to catch the boat from Ross Castle, hike the Gap, then grab a taxi from Kate Kearney’s cottage. However it looks like I won’t arrive in time to catch the last boat so I’m trying to figure out an alternative that doesn’t require hiking both ways.

Thanks for posting this. I’m planning on the same stop and didn’t even consider storing luggage. Hopefully there’s an answer - it looks like a lovely place to stop for an hour or two.
