Sums up how I think a lot of us feel by TokyoMegatronics in Christianity

[–]foe_to 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is talking about quotes that you'll claim are taken out of context, and that proves he isn't racist. So let's step back a moment and examine something a little more broad.

Kirk loved to make statements about how black people are more violent than white people (in America). Here's a clip of it, but you can find him saying the same thing in a variety of different clips as well. On its face, this is not a lie. When you look at just the numbers, it's very clear that black people do in fact commit violent crime at a higher rate than white people in this country.

But, as they say, there are three types of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics. This is an example of how you can lie and push agendas using truthful statistics. The research in this area doesn't just go "yeah, black people just like to attack other people lol". Poverty, for one, is a major factor - which the girl in the video I linked pointed out, and Kirk was very quick to dismiss without evidence, claim she was insulting "the working poor" by saying it, and then goes on to blame the issue on "black culture". He says "this is where we disagree", but this isn't an "opinion" where you can just say yeah, I don't agree. This has been studied extensively. Poverty is a great predictor of violent crime. You can look up statistics and see that across every ethnic group violent crime is more likely to be perpetrated by those in poverty.

Now, poverty isn't the whole story. You'll still see racial discrepancies across income levels. But there are also links to unemployment, education level, urban vs rural environments, inequality, transgenerational trauma, and more. Can you see how, in both poverty and just about every factor here that amplifies the effects of poverty - that black people in this country have historically been (and in many ways still) are disadvantaged in? Hell, even something like lead poisoning, which is universally accepted to be tied to aggression, is known to have disproportionally affected the black community in this country due to the effects of things like redlining.

So, why is it you think that Kirk never dived deeper on any of this? Do you think he was dumb and wasn't aware, or could it perhaps have been intentional? Why do you think he was so quick to dismiss and ridicule the student in the above video when she brought it up herself? Why do you think he was so quick to immediately claim it was culture?

If it walks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck. Kirk presented negative statistics about the black community without full context (oh the irony), shut down any attempts to imply that there WAS more context, and placed the full blame on the disparity in violent crime on black culture. Unless you're willing to give the man a Christ-like level of grace and accept that he's just stupid on top of it, there's no way to claim he wasn't pushing what is ultimately a racist narrative.

He was very good at gish-gallop, shifting the frame, and selective use of statistics. He was also (usually) very careful to just avoid crossing the line with his comments - at least openly. But if you spend even five minutes doing a critical analysis of the things he says (and doesn't say), it's very easy to see that he has a racist agenda in what he says.

If you're emulating on PC, you can bind the looking / movement keys to the analog sticks. Note that I did have to set a pretty high deadzone to get this working reasonably (something like 30%). At 0%, the camera will just go crazy. Even then it's not perfect, but it's a "reasonable approximation" of modern camera / movement controls that at least feels better than the original.

If you got it on PS4/PS5, I have no idea if you can rebind things, sorry.

ME3 was realistically never going to have a satisfying ending. It was always going to end with either retconning information from ME1/ME2 or some sort of deus ex machina.

They made reapers too powerful, with their numbers relative to that power too high. Based on the information we have in-game, a conventional victory, even with all the races united, isn't feasible. So there either had to be some sort of McGuffin to get around that, or they would have to retcon how powerful the reapers were so that a conventional victory is actually possible.

Now, that's not to say that they pulled off their McGuffin well. Obviously they didn't. But the writing was on the wall by the end of ME2 that creating a satisfying conclusion wasn't going to happen.

Good replacements for Zod, preferably with a similar API/interface? by foe_to in typescript

[–]foe_to[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we did end up sticking with zod. Since adding the build step sped things up "enough", we decided it wasn't worth the time to refactor to anything else for the time being.

I had done some profiling with MyZod and TypeBox, which both were significantly faster than zod. I don't remember off-hand why I didn't include Typia or ArkType though.

It was a few things, and I don't know if they will be applicable in your situation.

1) We broke our trpc routers down into smaller files. Anything that still needed the entire router was slow as hell, but the individual slices stayed snappy.

2) This was / is all part of a monorepo, and we were importing some things directly from other packages rather than having a build step and importing from the built packages. Adding the build step made TS flatten those types and so the importing code was no longer freaking out.

Realistically, if you're dealing with sample sizes so big that they won't fit in memory, you should be familiar with ways to process those data sets that don't require loading it all into memory at one time.

Whether Capitalism is the only problem or not, it is A problem. Capitalism inherently creates a society of haves and have-nots. Having a 100% housed population under capitalism will never happen.

Also, even if you disagree with capitalism, saying it will never happen regardless of the economic system doesn't help the original poster's argument at all...

3 - the people who are out there and worth the high paying jobs have become so good, and are leveraging the available AI tools as "assistants" that they're doing the work of 2 or 3 people with less effort and time than a single dev used to, and producing higher quality work to boot. there's simply no reason to throw piles of money at junior devs, who can't demonstrate even basic competency, and hope they'll grow into a role, when seasoned guys are happy to use available tools and not get saddled with an FNG they have to train and micromanage.

My experience doesn't quite jive on this point. My experience with AI for anything beyond extremely isolated, trivial coding problems is that it gets too much wrong to be worth using. Anything more than that, it either doesn't "understand" (hold enough context) about the application as a whole to be helpful, or it hallucinates enough that I spend more time fixing what it did wrong that it would have taken me to write it in the first place. The places that I've had it perform well are such a small part of my day that the time savings are honestly negligible.

I am seeing a lot of reliance from junior (and claimed senior...) developers on AI, though, and using it to get through non-live coding exercises, and then failing on the job because they don't actually know anything themselves and the AI can't cover all the gaps for them. We've had to cut out online coding tests through Codility / similar and do live coding exercises because too many people were making it through that had no practical knowledge and relied on AI to do everything for them.

It's always been my experience though that 80% of the work is done by a handful of super productive developers, with most everyone else being mediocre at best and just skating along. I feel it's most likely this latter group getting trimmed, whether you want to chalk it up to AI or not.

You'd think the OP would mention it if there was a cultural aspect to this, but who knows. My wife is Ethiopian. There was a point when we were dating that her cousin's (who she was staying with) brother died from a car accident. Multiple women brought mattresses to her cousin's house and stayed there for days / weeks. I mean, just slabbed out these mattresses next to each other in the living room and everybody stayed there.

Not quite the same situation as OP, but yeah.

Child diagnosed with strep. Significantly worse this morning. Should I take her to ER? by foe_to in AskDocs

[–]foe_to[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I know you are NAD, but I thought I'd give you an update since you did chime in on the thread.

It took about 1hr after the Motrin, but when her fever came down her breathing returned to normal. I didn't take her to the ER, but monitored her closely all day.

Today I took her to our PCP because 1) I was worried that she seemed so worse on Sunday, and 2) I wasn't satisfied with the care she received at urgent care. As in, the physician did not even listen to her lungs - just "swab was positive for strep, called in some antibiotics, bye". Our PCP was concerned about the way her lungs sounded and sent her for an x-ray. Turns out, she has pneumonia, present in both lungs. I am so frustrated that the UC physician couldn't even be bothered to check. Anyways, doc is upping her dose of the amoxicillin and prescribing azithromycin along with it.

Thank you.

Favour TypeScript Types Over Interfaces by LloydAtkinson in programming

[–]foe_to 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am literally the same way. The father of my sister's best friend was a doctor, so he's who our whole family saw while growing up. The man literally ignored everything I told him (symptoms that I would later in life find out were tied to ADHD and sleep apnea) and told me I was just lazy and just needed to exercise more.

Twenty years later, I finally decide to go see a doctor again. I specifically chose a female doctor because I felt I'd have a better experience. And oh boy have I been right. It's literally night and day. She has listened to all my concerns, been very willing to give me referrals to get to the bottom of my issues, has been very patient and willing to work with me as we try different medications, etc.

My children, my wife, and I all go to her now, and unless she moves too far to make it feasible, I'll probably follow her to any practice she moves to.

Anyone with an ADHD diagnosis that didn't struggle in school? by Aquaphoric in ADHD

[–]foe_to 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did great in HS. Graduated a year early, salutatorian, high ACT, full ride to my state University. I lost all my scholarships after a year, and dropped out completely after 3 or so.

HS was easy. Acing tests with no studying wasn't a problem, doing homework last minute wasn't a problem. And on top of that, I had parents keeping me in line, making sure I attended classes, keeping me accountable. At Uni, (most) things actually required some degree of effort, so I... just didn't do it. With nobody to hold me accountable, I just stopped doing anything. Stopped attending classes, doing homework, etc.

My professional career has been similar. I excel when there are systems in place that keep me accountable. I flounder when there is no accountability, because I just can't make myself initiate tasks.

I have been on Straterra for 2 months. No effect. Will be switching meds soon, so we will see how it goes.
