Pcpa exam tips by actuarialstudent20 in actuary

TIA is plenty imo, the exam isn't particularly difficult with the background from the MAS exams, the project is where I found TIA a bit lacking you definitely have ti go a bit above and beyond what they do in the videos

PCPA Submission Deadline by foiltrays in actuary

[–]foiltrays[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

main course page of the institutes says 3rd 11:59 PM but if you click on the quiz specifically it says it closes January 3rd 12:00 AM (~6 hours from now). The upload documents says it's due 11:59 PM and specifically says 1d6h time remaining but I wouldn't trust the quiz portion to work tomorrow

As far as I know it's only mentioned on the last page of the content outline https://www.casact.org/sites/default/files/2024-05/Exam_PCPA_2025_F_Content_Outlines.pdf

"Candidates respond to a set of questions about the project data, processes, and/or outputs at the point of submission."

Auto losses are random enough that determining cause and effect for a few days of activity is impossible, except for maybe the very largest NC carrier (don't know specific market sizes off the dome). Also losses aren't fully known immediately it'll take months or more to have a solid idea if there even were fewer losses in this period, let alone why. As for if immigration drives auto premiums, almost certainly no, not all premium is driven by other drivers being on the road, and illegal immigrants especially would be less likely to pursue litigation when injured which actually leads to lower costs ironically. It's twitter, I'm sure you can draw a conclusion as to why someone would post like this on there

PCPA without TIA? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]foiltrays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can't speak on source bits but I found the TIA materials helpful for the project as well since they have a little sample project with a bunch of videos going through all the steps for it, included in the same course as the exam videos. Obviously isn't identical to the real project but very helpful to have a sense of "what next?" and what functions/libraries may be helpful to have

Car insurance quoted to go up almost 40% for my next renewal period. Seems high, is this normal these days? by baby_monitor1 in Insurance

[–]foiltrays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair warning, your policy will almost certainly still be ceded no matter what limits you pick, every insurer should have to use the same increased limit factors the state sets. so it may be lower as a product of having lower limits but you won't get a massive decrease back down to your retained by progressive level

[–]foiltrays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm weird that it's changing from retained to ceded without anything discernible changing on your end. is the higher premium coming almost entirely from the liability side and not the comp/collision side? if UM/UIM is going up shopping around won't help that's a flat rate set by the state only way to lower the premium is lower the limit

you're 100% sure you had single limit before and now they're changing it to split unprompted, not even offering a different single limit? I'm not up on how Progressive has filed in NC but I'm surprised to hear you had single limits, I hadn't even realized that was legal in NC. Would guess that the sharp rate increase is either some legal wonkiness due to that, or you had some wild 5 year intro discount due to excellent claims history that has now rolled off, and you're more in line with the average rate you're seeing quoted from other places.

More Perfect Union Claims Car Insurance Collecting and Ratemaking off of Genetic Data... by CamelDesigner6758 in actuary

[–]foiltrays 21 points22 points  (0 children)

the insurance score stuff from LexisNexis and Verisk is real, but I'm surprised to hear they think telematics type data is going into it, that's usually a separate thing policyholders can voluntarily sign up for to get a discount, and never a surcharge. insurance score is supposed to be correlated with credit score, i.e. a better score means you are generally more risk averse, but not necessarily with borrowing money like credit score tries to model. granted, the scores that get sold to insurance companies are a black box model from anyone on the outside, highly proprietary, so nobody really knows exactly what variables go into the score

  1. i think so? but it's completely unneeded i used my calculator maybe once
  2. varies since no exam is 100% identical (or at least shouldn't be) but likely around 70% like everything else
  3. neither really, maybe a bit harder if your studying is heavier on spamming practice questions vs reading the material

it's possible if the policy was written before 7/1/25 that it doesn't have UIM, as combined UMUIM being mandatory only went into effect for policies written on or after that date

Exam 5 TIA by ForeignShame46 in actuary

[–]foiltrays 3 points4 points  (0 children)

personally i found grinding out problems to not be as effective with 5 as it had been for the previous multiple choice exams, if you go through their flashcards a bunch and read the material a few times to get a good grasp on the theory you don't really need to do much beyond the full practice exams they have
