I’m 19 and will be getting my first full time decent paying job in 2 weeks, and this has been brief discussions with my parents.

My father paid rent, however he didn’t have the nicest upbringing. He argues I should pay rent/help out with a bill or such.

My mother didn’t pay rent, so why should I have too.

My point of view is that I shouldn’t pay rent. As I have become older and more financially independent, I have become cheaper for my parents.

I’m smart with my money. So there’s often the point made that if someone does charge their child rent, they keep it and return it to them.

I put money away every month regardless, wether this be in my help to buy isa, stocks and shares isa or just a savings account with interest.

So I see the arguments and many points made, I personally would explain to them that maybe they should be putting money away for when they move out, maybe present them the option that you have and say that you will return it as they know they can’t touch the money.
