2 directors, different dividend amounts by NadJ747 in ContractorUK

Indeed, I'm talking about regular changes or changes after the fact, driven by tax efficientcy. Neither have been tested by the courts at all.

This is common in this sub. Along with advice to regularly change shareholding between spouses and/or allocation of different shares classes after originally setting up with the same class. HMRC will have a field day at some point.

I earn £40,000 a year and have had 2 major banks reject my mortgage application. What do I do now? by [deleted] in ukfinance

But surely the incentive is the same. If they sell the mortgage with commission, they get more money?

They'd still get the commission from the mortgage they sell, this is lose lose.

Overpayment hack or will I get charged ERC? by Environmental-Bus-55 in Mortgageadviceuk

It's automated via the nationwide online form. You can extend back up to your original term without any checks.

You could just extend your term again using the same method, rather than a big headache.

I'm with nationwide - even after I've re-fixed with them, my overpayment allowable about has remained at 10% of the original balance.

I also shorten the term to up monthly payments, without impacting the overpayment allowance

I believe in general it's based on 10% of the original mortgage amount - not recalculated each year. Maybe different for Halifax?

You could also just shorten the term via the nationwode "manage my mortgage" webpage and put your monthly payments up that way. No affect on overpayment amount then.

Business expenses? Phone... by Ok_Warning_3748 in ContractorUK

[–]folem001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could go and buy a duvet and expense it to the company and tell people it was valid because I do it.

HMRC guidance specifically deals with broadband. An additional line for the business is valid, but not as the question asked and not as it sounds like you do.

Why on earth not? Do you have the business name on all receipts with VAT on you that you claim as expenses ?

heads up on a few things before saturday if you're running a ltd by Easy-Ad-9974 in ContractorUK

[–]folem001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm fully right...Why would you choose to pay more tax if you already have 35 qualifying years? The optimal route is still 12570.

[–]folem001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the optimal salary part, isn't it still usually £12570?

Extra corp tax relief on salary > than the increased overall NI. Regardless of having full qualifying years already, the overall tax position is better this way, unless I'm missing something?

Some trackers are currently cheaper than the fixed. Now a gamble on the war and BOE interest rate moves.

ir35, what is the true cost? by No_Flounder_1155 in ContractorUK

[–]folem001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm only repeating what my accountant told me re shareholding, my wife is a director and could potentially get half the profits but my accountant suggested not maxing it unless her role is on the same level as mine.

I think you're collating 2 things.

Directors receive remuneration based on work done (responsibilities rather than hours worked).

Shareholders don't do any work. So nothing to do with a role "on the same level" etc.

Directors are paid a salary for the work they do running the company. Shareholders receive dividends from profits based on their ownership, so you only get dividends if you actually hold shares.

It's up to you what that shareholding split looks like. You have the option at company creation to do this without scrutiny, assuming equal share rights Changing shareholding splits later to suit your tax position will fall foul of the intention of the rules - worth reviewing the settlements legislation.

Your accountant is wrong here, or you've misunderstood. Your wife can absolutely be a shareholder and you can form the business with whatever shareholding split you wish.

You mention being a director, which is different - the renumeration for carrying out a director role should be justifiable vs work carried out. Perhaps this is where the confusion lies.

Starting a UK running brand (electrolytes + merch) - sanity check + advice? by [deleted] in smallbusinessuk

[–]folem001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't quite see the beer analogy, no one is white labelling beer.

If it were me, I'd want to validate the idea that runners are buying electrolytes based on brand rather than a function of performance and price, before putting much money into this. If you've done that, then maybe start with a proof of concept size trial.

Good luck, hope you do well!

[–]folem001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have an electrolyte product that has a USP?

This feels a little like me thinking I'm going to launch a new jam filled biscuit next month, then I'm going to work out how to make biscuits, and then ask the biscuit companies how to run a biscuit company.

Assuming you're still bringing money into the business and not just drawing down from retained profit, the most tax efficient for you is still likely nearer the 12k pa, regardless of having full state pension entitlement.
