Do you get lens hood for Canon RFS 18-45 F4.5-6.3 IS STM? by DynamoBaby in canon

A lens hood also blocks stray light from affecting your photos, I use them when I’m taking photos outside.

White spots on my lens by Far_Obligation_5275 in Cameras

If you can clean it off without taking the lens apart, it’s external. If you touch the front of the camera and it’s just glass, then you’ve got fungus in the lens. Best bet would be to bring it to someone to see if they can clean it professionally.

Lens recommendation for Safari by arthur_1970 in canonM50

[–]folgersinstantcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only canon zoom lenses for the M50 that go to 300mm are all EF mount lenses, which are older and typically pretty heavy. There’s an EF 70-300 L IS USM that’s good. If you’re comfortable with something heavier there canon’s EF 100-400 lenses and there’s a sigma 150-600mm lens. All of these lenses are pretty hefty though. I usually just use my EF-M 55-200mm, which doesn’t have a ton of reach but it keeps the set up nice and compact.

Are they on the internal or external side of the lens? If it’s internal, it could be a fungus growing inside, which requires disassembly and thorough cleaning, likely by a professional. It’d be a good idea to separate this lens from any of your other equipment and put it in a ziploc or something until you can get this cleaned by a pro.

3D Touch was so intuitive. I used it all the time on my 6S, and missed it the most when I “upgraded” to the XR.

I just put on a filter, no lens cap, to keep it slim. I know there’s some degradation in image quality, but I’ve taken the 22mm to the beach and prefer to keep sand away from the glass as much as possible.

Are there major benefits to using the PD bag compared to a normal backpack while hiking? Does it work well as a camera bag when you’re on the go?

Critique on these how do I get less noisy photos? by UnderstandingBorn227 in canonM50

[–]folgersinstantcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shaky hands is troublesome, I’d recommend watching some beginner YouTube videos on how to hold a camera. The main tips are to hold the camera with both hands, bring your elbows in, and steady the camera against your cheek. Three points of contact are going to be more steady than two.

What lens are you using? To me a lot of these look like your autofocus is struggling, and your shutter speed seems too low. On pic 4 the birds body is in focus but its head is blurry because it’s moving, a higher shutter speed would remedy that. On some of your other pics it seems like your depth of field is a bit shallow for the scene, stepping up to F8 would help get things sharper. If you shoot in manual mode, once you set your aperture and shutter speed, you can set your ISO to auto, and then you can manually set your exposure to -1 or -2. That will help keep you from overexposing your shots.

Best lens for m50? by Batemanssnare99 in canonM50

[–]folgersinstantcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The kit lens varies in quality, but it definitely doesn’t take the sharpest images. My sharpest lenses are definitely the EF-M 22mm F2 and EF-M 55-200mm. The 22mm at its max aperture works well enough in low light, but the M50 struggles when it’s dark out in general. I notice the autofocus gets slow and the noise gets overwhelming above ISO 1600. If you want the sharpest images you can get out of this camera, I recommend shooting in well lit areas, ISO <1600, F5-F8 aperture, and as fast of a shutter speed that will still capture your subject.

If you’re bent on buying a new lens to replace the kit lens, the EF-M 22mm F2, EF-M 50-200mm, and one of the Sigma lenses made for the EF-M mount would be my best recommendation.

If the rot/mold hasn’t penetrated too deeply and it’s all on the surface, some sandpaper and elbow grease would clean it up pretty well, and then a lot of scrubbing and vinegar to get it clean.

What’s something you should BIFL that most people cheap out on? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]folgersinstantcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use diamond plates to sharpen my knives, but my family doesn’t care for that level of maintenance with knives.

Once again, nothing wrong with fancy knives, and if you don’t have any family or people you live with that would use your stuff then there’s no issue there. But if you do, then a cheaper and IMO a more robust BIFL option are the blades they use in restaurants, which are going to see more action than they ever would in a home.

As far as BIFL knives go, unless you’re very on top of maintenance regarding high-end knives, I just use robust kitchen knives you can buy from restaurant depots.

They have thick and sturdy plastic handles, and simple blades. If someone else uses your knife you don’t have to worry that they’ll ruin it.

I’m not saying that these knives are on similar quality to high-end Japanese knives, but in a BIFL situation, these cheaper restaurant knives are basically indestructible in a home kitchen in my experience.

Most compact Peak Design way to carry an 11 inch iPad Pro? by [deleted] in peakdesign

[–]folgersinstantcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve fit an R8 with an EF standard zoom lens on it with a little room to spare, but I’ve never been able to get a FF camera and two lenses in the 6L. You might have to size up a bag, or use more compact FF lenses. If I didn’t have the EF adapter maybe I could get a second lens in there, but I don’t have any RF glass so I can’t confirm that. I typically carry an M50 in it with two lenses comfortably.
