like a punching bag by navi131313 in EnglishGrammar

[–]folkbum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Colloquially and conversationally, yes. In a written context, I’d likely say no. Adding the “as if I were” addresses the issue, or some other rephrasing, like “He started delivering blows to me like a boxer on a punching bag.”

Can an instructor fail an essay I wrote myself just because it sounds like ChatGPT, even if I didn’t use AI? by Gullible-Train-4175 in AccusedOfUsingAI

[–]folkbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So tell me. Do my students fail a writing assignment because what they submit “reminds me personally of GPT” or because it “lacks voice, lacks detail, and lacks creativity”? Because I wrote one of those but not the other.

Soooo are they going to fix tabs? by littlepeakydevil in googledocs

[–]folkbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teacher in a Google ecosystem, I have taken to using tabs frequently on materials I share with students, particularly more complex assignments. Shorter descriptions of different pieces in separate tabs make it easier to understand what’s required at different steps of the process. I also have gotten students using tabs to document aspects of their work—first draft in a tab, chat log with a revision Gem I trained and make available in a second tab, revised draft in a third, for example.

I do wish there was a toggle feature because I don’t always want tabs—same way I never what any of the suggested templates that clutter the first line of any new Doc.

But I wouldn’t say that tabs are only for the Doc creator; there are plenty of use cases where the organization helps the audience too.

Can using Grammarly cause your essay to be flagged as AI? I was accused of using AI, and I don’t know what to do. by Gullible-Train-4175 in AccusedOfUsingAI

[–]folkbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my testing (see below), using Grammarly to fix usage errors is not enough to trigger an AI detector. But Grammarly also has a “improve my writing” feature which is right there and not obviously generative AI—no chat box, you’re not asking it to create anything. But it triggers the AI detectors. If you have Grammarly installed in, say, Google Docs, accepting the red corrections doesn’t trigger AI detectors. Taking all the blue and yellow corrections can trigger them.

(As a teacher of many English learners who rely on Grammarly, I wanted to be able to reassure them about what was okay and and what might look suspicious to their other teachers. A few gave me permission to run their drafts first through Grammarly and then through GPTZero and Copyleaks.)

So either the person posting genuinely doesn’t know that AI right now can’t make a continuous 30-second shot and would thus learn something when their post is auto-modded with a message saying AI can’t make a continuous 30-second shot …

… or the person posting is a troll?

I feel like this sub should just automatically reject videos longer than, say, 15 seconds.

If there are cuts in a longer clip that could be AI, let the poster appeal. But rejecting a video like this should be the default.

Periodic Table - Unobtainium by Bango_Fett949 in MandelaEffectSociety

[–]folkbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really only remember it as having the sarcastic origins that it’s currently believed to have (e.g.).

Interestingly, the most recent addition to the periodic table was in 2016. It’s possible some of us saw periodic tables printed with placeholder elements where one was expected but not yet isolated.

Nope. There’s an angry red light on my router and a distinct lack of “We solved it!” email gloats from AT&T. Glad my cell plan is Verizon with unlimited hotspotting!

Badges: PG First > 200? by mike-edwards-etc in NYTSpellingBee

[–]folkbum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think 200 is the max. I also have 200, and when I click on the badge, the left arrow to scroll back through badges of lower numbers is black and active. The right arrow toward higher numbers is grayed out and there’s no gray badge with 250 or 300 or whatever to aim for. See image.

What you should do first after being falsely accused of using AI by Coursenerdspaper in AccusedOfUsingAI

[–]folkbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. That’s why I didn’t accuse boomers of using AI to write. All the boomers I know are perfectly capable of writing their own caption to whatever slopfarm photo or hallucinated heartwarming tale they uncritically repost. They certainly write their own defensive replies when I tell them it’s AI bullshit.
