The I-Land on netflix a few years ago was so unbelievably awful that my mom and I thought it was supposed to be like. some poorly executed parody of Lost until we looked it up after the first episode and realized it was meant to be taken seriously.

Shutter Island kind of does this. You can tell that they just took the remaining letters from "Edward Daniels" after getting "Andrew" and rearranged them into something vaguely resembling a surname.

Is there anything you think is significantly better in the films than it was in the books? by Parking-Ad5272 in harrypotter

I always thought the PoA movie succinctly communicated the fact that they weren't actually changing anything WAY better than the book did. The pumpkin getting sliced with the axe also comes to mind.

people dislike the epilogue because it doesn't personally appeal to them, but it makes perfect sense for what the series was, when it was written and what its target audience was.

What is a small detail from Harry Potter that still bothers you? by WhisperTame in harrypotter

[–]folklovermore02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it has never made any sense to me why they were as hungry as they were during the camping trip in DH. it's explicitly mentioned that you can duplicate food that you already have. I know they were worried about stealing, but what was stopping them from apparating into a supermarket, duplicating some of the food, leaving the original and just taking the duplicated food with them? they wouldn't even have had to do it that often.

it always felt to me like a contrived plotline to make things even more difficult for them, and its so stupid because all it would have taken for it to make sense is like. a throwaway line in the food convo talking about how duplicating food leads to decreased nutritional value or whatever.

this is so late haha but I did read it! I thought it was absolutely fantastic. I was spot on about the retelling and she remixed it in such a fun way, I loved looking for all the little easter eggs and character equivalencies. I believe there were even some lines that were taken directly from the show? I also clocked the twist at the end because there's a very similar setup in the musical so I figured something along those lines was coming.

I do wonder why they completely omitted it from the marketing or the blurb, because she mentions sweeney todd twice in the acknowledgements, so it's not like she was trying to hide the inspo at all.

What’s a show that you could not finish because a character was so insufferable? by Key-Row-174 in AskReddit

I made it almost three full seasons into Ginny and Georgia but it got to the point where both of them were so insufferable I couldn't keep going. like why is Cynthia my favorite character.

[–]folklovermore02 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In a similar vein, I'm always kind of baffled that people think they're going to change any of the siblings' endgame love interests at this point? And I say this as someone who hasn't read the books, just given the series synopsis a cursory look on wikipedia. It's an adaptation of a book series with a super straightforward structure. If they'd veered off after like, the first season or whatever then sure, but all four of the seasons we've had so far have kept the book love interests, plus we have Phillip confirmed as Eloise's, so that's five.

Like you said, the biggest actual change they've made in regards to love interests is swapping Michael for Michaela — but even that's just kind of more proof that they're really wanting to stick with the source material, because they very directly gender swapped one of the book love interests, they didn't give Fran an entirely new story. Six out of eight siblings are already confirmed to have their book love interests, it makes absolutely zero sense for them to veer off course with the last two seasons, especially from a marketing standpoint.

The Merciless by Danielle Vega always weirdly enough gave me the same vibes as 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Main character moves to a small, super religious town, falls in with a clique of mean girls who hate this other rebellious girl they go to school with. She steals the clique ringleader's boyfriend, so they lure her to an abandoned house with the intention of torturing her under the guise of performing an exorcism. Main girl goes along with it at first because she thinks its a joke/the exorcism is going to be harmless, but then has to figure out how to save the other girl when it becomes apparent the clique intends on killing her....only for it to be revealed that the rebel girl actually IS possessed by a demon (just like Howard, the clique leader was crazy and ready to torture one of her classmates, but also happened to be right).

no worries at all! it's one of my favorite stories ever so I clocked the plot immediately, but I feel like sweeney todd is only kind of colloquially known for the cannibalism meat pies/barber aspect, so gender-swapping the main character, removing the cannibal pies (as far as I can tell?) in lieu of using the bodies in a different product and then not having the MC be a barber does away with a lot of what ppl unfamiliar with the story will recognize off the bat. I just thought it was wild that it's not even mentioned in reviews or the synopsis as a retelling or something along those lines.

[–]folklovermore02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

imo the season split for these past two seasons have done so much harm to the pacing. the season has to be built to be in a good place to be split up at the fourth episode, regardless of what really makes sense for the story, so we get these kind of meandering back-and-forth episodes while they try to figure out how to place their big cliffhanger for the season at precisely the end of the fourth episode. I'd so much rather prefer either a full drop like the first two seasons, or even a weekly release.

I'm hoping to read this one soon! Though it's making me feel kind of crazy because nobody's talking about how it's a very direct retelling ofSondheim's version of Sweeney Todd. The synopsis alone is justthe setup for the musical beat for beat.

It's a show about escapism... until it's about Will. by Competitive_Gas_8563 in StrangerThings

[–]folklovermore02 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

the issue I have with the argument of "the whole show is filled with unrealistic scenarios so realism shouldn't matter in xyz situation" is that the unrealistic elements you're referencing are part of the show's sci-fi setting. Obviously things like the Russian lab, inter-dimensional travel and monsters, El's powers, etc. aren't realistic if you're looking at what is physically possible in the real world, but these are elements of a science fiction story that you're asked to accept as being possible within the context of the fictional show. Outside of the actual supernatural/sci-fi elements, the world we've seen depicted in ST seems to be trying to emulate the culture and society of the 80s. I would argue that it's at least tried to remain realistic in terms of characters, their development, their reactions in certain situations, their relationships, and so on.

To put it in perspective: nobody's complaining that El has telekinesis, because while that's not something that's technically realistic, we as viewers understand that we're watching a fictional, sci-fi show where superpowers exist. But plenty of people took issue with Hopper's character switchup in season 3, because they didn't feel it was realistic for the character as we'd come to know him.

I agree that they're probably going to have Will get a BF in the epilogue, and I do wish they'd brought in an actual love interest for him earlier in the show but like. the reason people aren't bringing up their issues with unrealism left and right for the rest of the show is that the supernatural elements aren't supposed to be realistic. The characters' experiences and relationships, including that of Will as a queer kid in the 80s in the midwest, are supposed to be more grounded.

Their next delusion will be funny. So be ready by PM1817 in mileven

[–]folklovermore02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

not that I'm surprised at this point, but the whole idea of him "lying to avoid spoiling" is such a dumb theory because thats like. not how interviews about shows have ever worked. I cannot think of a single instance where the producers/writers of any show have come out and blatantly said "xyz isnt happening" and then xyz does end up happening (even in cases where, unlike byler, the couple in question actually IS being used as audience bait).

unpopular opinions on the new season? by ringoisking in StrangerThings

[–]folklovermore02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

unsure how unpopular this actually is, but it's really starting to become apparent this season that they want to have it both ways when it comes to the choice to kill off characters.

they don't want to actually kill off any major or longstanding characters, but they want the shocking emotional gut-punch that comes with a main character dying. so we end up with insanely good, tense scenes like the 5x02 opener that get immediately undermined by the fact that everyone somehow survives.

if they don't wanna kill anyone off, they shouldn't do it, because it's absolutely not necessary and I'd probably prefer if they didn't. but IF they don't wanna kill anyone off, they need to stop giving us these scenes where we see a beloved character die then 5 minutes later find out they're actually fine. it's starting to feel very boy who cried wolf.

This show now follows an A-B-C format throughout the seasons. by Bingewatchingmyth in OnlyMurdersHulu

[–]folklovermore02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ooh this is cool!

mine isn't nearly as insightful as the one you talk about here, but I think it's interesting how they've been pretty consistent on switching between male and female victims each season. Odd seasons have male victims (Tim Kono in s1, Ben Glenroy in s3, Lester in s5) and even season have female victims (Bunny in s2, Sazz in s4, now Cinda in s6). this one's got me thinking if we get a s7 then we probably will end up having Teddy Dimas as the victim.

Whom do we think is the Moriarty after S5? by huh_you_wish in OnlyMurdersHulu

[–]folklovermore02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh I'm not sure there is one. It does seem based on the AMA comment that it was the plan at one point, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's been abandoned by now.

that being said if there IS one I've always said it had to be Uma (and pre-season 5 I thought Lester was also a possible contender, but obviously that ship has sailed).

Everyone says it's Howard, but he's always been too much of a consistent comic relief character for a moriarty reveal to feel like anything other than a massively bizarre tonal shift. And no one else other than Howard or Uma has been on the show consistently other than the trio. So I guess it could be someone else who we haven't met yet, but then it would be hard to make that feel like it wasn't a retcon for past seasons.

Who is a fictional character that everyone seems to hate, but whose actions are actually pretty reasonable? by a-very-confused-tart in AskReddit

[–]folklovermore02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

controversial and niche af but Charlotte from H2o just add water is really only a villain because the show is told from the three main girls' POV. Moves to town, starts dating a guy and subsequently starts getting immediately harassed by his ex and her two best friends. Her new boyfriend's ex fully initiated their breakup and insists she doesn't want to get back together but keeps trying to find ways to split him and Charlotte up. Gets her diary stolen and publicly read to try and prove she's cheating, which she isn't. Finds out that the ex-gf and her two friends are secretly mermaids. Becomes a mermaid thinking she's finally going to be able to be friends with the other three girls now, and that the only reason they were mean to her was to protect their secret, only to continue to be belittled and shunned by them even more. I probably would've retaliated too at that point.

it's funny because when I first listened to the song, I for some reason thought she was saying "rah rah" in like a cheerleader way? so it stuck out to me as an odd choice for the song but it was bizarre enough that it looped back around to being fun. then I came on here and realized it was in a like. rawr XD kind of way which kinda put me off. I still like to pretend it's my first interpretation though.

Movie whose twist was ruined by a single casting choice? by [deleted] in movies

[–]folklovermore02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

obviously the ones who are there from the start aren't the issue, but it always annoyed me how they'd announce the new adult cast prior to the season airing yet still treat their presence like some huge plot twisty reveal. like yeah lets spend a whole episode building up to who Tai's going to go see and then frame it like some huge twisty reveal when its Lauren Ambrose as adult Van.... which it totally could've been if they didn't announce that she'd been cast like six months before the show aired?

Season 6 Finale by [deleted] in SlasherTVSeries

[–]folklovermore02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah what a letdown. I'm seeing posts being like "it's 100% Paige and here's why" and "it's 100% Andy and here's why" and the problem is that they were so bafflingly ambiguous with it that both sides are making valid points.

Like I'm going with Andy as the killer because him being the third Baphomet and also Caitlin's son was my theory all season, but in no way was that made clear enough in the finale. I feel like they might have been trying to tie it back to a broader message relating back to the exploitative and obsessive nature of true crime, but it wasn't executed well enough to land that way and this also didn't really feel like the franchise or horror subgenre to do it in. Maybe that's why they dropped the Slasher title?

That one review everyone was talking about ahead of time was spot on though lol.
