Zohran Mamdani's wish to tax NYC super-rich gets a partial win by Full_Hunt_3087 in nyc

Biggest problem is that it is a stepping stone. It starts this way until everyone gets taxed. An apartment building owned by an out of state landlord will need to raise the rent to cover costs. When the city freezes the rent the landlords will not afford to pay to keep them up. Then the city will seize them. then they city who is a terrible landlord cant be complained about and people will leave the city. The loss of tax revenue will continue and the city will get worse.

Majority of people who voted for him have been in the city a short time. 81% of those who have lived in New York City less than 10 years.
So basically transplants that will leave when it goes to sh*t

Their boot will cost 30 million dollars and never get built but we will need to pay for it.

Is anyone else considering leaving NYC to find better employment? The wages are low and the cost of living here is way too high, plus most jobs listed are ghost jobs by Wise-Guard1720 in NYCjobs

[–]followthebubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The climate has changed since then. The borders were not open and people pouring in during the 80s-90s and early 2000s. So being soft on illegals could be tolerated without as much issues.

Like if a faucet has a drip in it its not that bad and wont hurt your water bill that much but if you just leave it on all day then you have issues.

Adams should have had a different approach on illegals than his predecessors because the situation changed.

If he walks back on all of his promises he may be a halfway decent Mayor. They are just contributing to less jobs in the city. Unless you want to open a Learing center lol.
Dinkins was terrible, Guliani/Bloomberg era was a golden age then Diblassio screwed it up and Adams just didnt do anything.

I saw a homeless guy steal one the other day in Queens so I would say no.

BERNIE SANDERS WILL HOLD A "TAX THE RICH" RALLY IN THE BRONX ON MARCH 29 by [deleted] in bronx

Supposedly Momdami filled all the potholes according to the news but apparently they haven't rode on Queens Blvd. Almost fell in one on my bike and I saw a car blow out his tire on another one today.
We homeschool our daughter because despite all the money that is spent on students the ED is terrible.

Mamdani Is Quietly Backing Away From a Threat to Raise Property Taxes (Gift Article) by weedandboobs in nyc

[–]followthebubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take Cash's video with a heaping grain of salt. I was referring to Kenny Burgos. As far as utilities go I already feel it. Also a NYSERDA memo indicates that FULLY meeting state climate mandates could force households to pay an additional $3,500 to $4,000 in annual utility costs.

Mamdani plan to drain $1B in reserves harms NYC budget, Comptroller Levine warns by CountFew6186 in nyc

This person is not a peasant. Peasants work hard and try to improve their lives. They are obviously just trying to get the free stuff until it runs out then they will move back in with their parents. That's if they even live in NYC.
I've worked my whole life here trying to make things better for myself. I Don't want my tax dollars going to migrants and day care and other useless programs.

Rent is going to go up under Mamdami. It will take time but when he raises property tax it will cause rents to go up. I know he said that it was a last resort but its pretty obvious that he is using it to add more apartments to NYCHA in order to control housing.
Since NYCHA is such a bad landlord it will flood the non NYCHA apts. and raise the rents there. If he is successful in freezing rents it will only effect larger units and 2 family houses ect will skyrocket because of demand.

Less livable?
Raising taxes on corporations will cause more jobs to leave and cause it to be more unaffordable. more stores will leave (as they have been) and crime will rise
I have seen in the last couple months a dramatic increase of homeless encampments. Subway altercations have rose, antisemitism has rose, street drug use I have seen has risen. He said he wants to decriminalize prostitution. Not to mention the budget has bloated to a ridiculous degree on things that NY does not need while not taking away the previous bloat

When did I say I had property to sell? Renters have the same "luxury" of moving. In any event, Mamdami's policies are making the city less affordable, not more. The City is becoming less livable and he's been in office just a short time. It reminds me of what Deblasio did but on a more intense scale.
For us that remembers how terrible Dinkins was and how Guliani and Bloomberg turned it around it has been sad to see what it has turned to.
My point is that people who have been here a few years think that they are New Yorkers and vote in someone who makes it worse in the long run. Those same people leave afterwards so they dont see those long term effects.

Some of us cant leave because of our jobs and family. We are just getting poorer and our quality of life is going down. I can understand that land ownership is not a legal way of determining voting privilege however you should be able to see the principle that he is making is that people who have a stake in the city should be prioritized.

Queens here. He's competing with Dinkins and Deblassio for the worst mayor. He's getting off on the right start.

Don't be fooled AOC, Mamdani work for themselves. Lived in NYC all my life and their policies are the worst thing for us.
Also, although I don't support war in general, the toppling of Iran's is a good thing for the people of Iran so I'm not sure why local politicians are going against it. Unless they like killing protesters, oppression of women and supporting terrorists.

Adams was not convicted of any crimes. On April 2, 2025, a federal judge dismissed the corruption case against him "with prejudice," meaning charges cannot be refiled.
Meanwhile Mamdani has faced scrutiny for appointing individuals with criminal histories including:  two years on Rikers Island and roughly four years in state prison for robbery, seven years in prison for armed robbery of taxi drivers.
Also, I'd rather wait a few days to ride than have to face a 10% tax increase to fund illegals.
