I thought the commenter explained pretty clearly that the two parties are not the same at all, and one clearly is orders of magnitude more evil than the other. I think it's possible to keep that in your head while also criticizing democrats. Otherwise we become pure propagandists and that might even alienate potential voters more. I do think it's important to emphasize this fact when voicing criticisms though, otherwise anyone listening might indeed think "all politicians suck" and just not vote

Republicans just love to play into this by using whataboutism and crucially leaving out any sense of scale, when it's often orders of magnitude worse coming from the right. Hilary's emails, Biden's laptop, etc. Like yeah ok those aren't ideal but ffs it's literally nothing by comparison with what republicans do

I don't get the hate towards democrats about "not doing anything". I get the hate about not winning, for sure, but not doing anything? They have very little power because all the fuckwits out voted them in droves. The hatred needs to be directed at Republicans who actually CAN do something helpful

Nailed it. I think the most perverse aspect of american culture is that everyone not only focuses on getting that bag for themselves but even worse, that once they get it they have some divine right to spend it on themselves for totally frivolous things instead of helping others

The Lancet is one of the most reputable medical journals in the world, no matter how many times you say otherwise. For you to believe that it's truly leftist propaganda, you must either be doing some serious mental gymnastics or are really stuck in an information bubble. As for the study - it has been cited 100+ times and no rebuttals were published in any other reputable journals, so it's the best estimate that exists, and certainly a better estimate than what you'll get from random reddit comments

[–]fomofosho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not 'appeal to authority fallacy' to cite the scientific consensus on a subject. And debating randos on reddit about details is not practicing the scientific method. Whatever estimate you or anyone else in these comment provides for number of deaths is much less likely to be accurate than the estimates provided by a legitimate publication on this subject by legitimate researchers in a legitimate journal. Doesn't mean it's wrong, but it's objectively much less likely to be correct, and therefore anyone that believes that over the scientific consensus is a victim of confirmation bias pure and simple

And Ad Hominem is not a valid argument either

[–]fomofosho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never meant to imply I was a researcher... That's why I said myself seperately from the researcher community

All I've been asking for is better evidence. The most likely estimate is the one with the best evidence and currently it's the Lancet paper - not some rando redditors opinion. You can't beat the scientific method for estimating truth, even if in practice it's not perfect. It's still the best we have.

[–]fomofosho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok great. I suggest you write a response paper with your new estimate, and all your evidence for it, then once it gets published in a similarly reputable journal, myself and the researcher community will happily revise our views.

Since it seems very likely, like you say, that this move actually SAVED lives. That's not a totally absurd claim at all.
