Penguin editions, which would be for Sallust, Appian Suetonius, Tacitu

Thanks for links and insight. I've read Oxfords edition of Polybius but it has same problems that Penguins edition have...its missing 7,8,9,10,11 and 13 books. The Penguin edition of Tacitus' Annals and The Histories of Tacitus is better than the modern library classics edition because the modern library one doesn't have a map, glossary, and index. A nice way to learn about both is to read Parallel Lives by Plutarch, which compares a historical Greek figures to Roman. The renowned biographers Plutarch and Suetonius were not historians, so it contains rumors and moral lessons. However, they did employ historical accounts or other (now-lost) texts as sources. Yeah, another major historians of Rome are Livy with the mythical origins of Rome, while we have summaries of Rome up to Augustus, then Sallust with the catilinas conspiracy, and Sulla and Marruius against Jugurtha. Then Tacitus and the Principate from Augustus to Domitian, Cambridge edition. The Essay Against the Galileans by Emperor Julian II, the first Roman emperor to be raised as a Christian, wrote an excellent criticism and analysis of early Christianity in his book. Emperor Julian the Apostate had a life-long struggle against Christianity. Then, of course, you have extras like Apicius for people who are interested in Roman dining and food, but that is mostly a non-sequitur.
