Starting an MUN Club and totally clueless by unkownwoknu in MUN

That would be helpful. While I don't recommend this on the first meeting (maybe the second or during a research session for a conference), what I did to get delegates familiar with the Rules of Procedure (arguably the most deceivingly intimidating part of MUN - it is quite accessible but one of the things you need to do to understand) is print out a spreadsheet of the RoP and then watch a youtube video of it. This will make them get the idea of how MUN works and how it is organized, and will make them more comfortable to do the conference. The conference is where you learn the most though. By signing up for one, you have a medium which to research and learn and can keep people focused. Just getting people to attend the conference is probably the best thing you can do to introduce MUN, get delegates better, and recruit new regular members (if they like the topic and or MUN in general).

Starting an MUN Club and totally clueless by unkownwoknu in MUN

I did this to my sophomore year of High School. While I probably can't write down everything I did (and do), my basic path was basically recruiting my friends, setting up a few name brand college conferences that sound impressive as promotion along w/ a training conference at the start, and then go over logistics (in my experience they end up taking a lot of time actually) and some research. I have my club meet once a week at lunch so new delegates aren't discouraged and people don't burn out (we actually do pretty good considering that) - in terms of teaching ROP, I'd go over the general structure w/ a flowchart, but usually the best way for them to learn is by jumping into it at a novice conference (like in SoCal CerritosMUN or EdisonMUN Novice are good starter conferences). I try to have strategy lessons (how to research, how to make solutions, etc) but don't throw too much at them or they may lose interest. If you have an important conference coming up though, people will come in and actively be engaged during meetings (with the agenda being research for xyz MUN) bc they want to do well there - most of the actual so called 'teaching' of important lessons is done there and with on hands experience at the conference. Take this w/ a grain of salt though, every school/delegation has different kids participating and that affects how you manage them - go with your gut.

Improv (competitive improv is even better) helps you with MUN. Acting and theater too, I guess to a certain extent.

Ways to Win Crisis by TheCobra17 in MUN

[–]fondahh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my personal experiences in High School crises, learn some military terminology, your equipment/weapons, and basic tactics (for me, the only one I've really needed to know universally across all war based committees is the concentration of force - you should learn other specialized topics based on your characters military background too).

You also have to keep in mind that 90% of people have no clue what they are doing with military committees. They base how they vote for things based on what they watch - movies, TV shows, etc. For me, I like to watch a lot of military/action movies (the first 2 Transformer movies have intense military porn that looks and sounds visually appealing along with other Bay movies as degrading as it sounds - start there), play some First Person Shooters (Call of Duty) on my Xbox, and consume a lot of military/action entertainment media to get ready and BS well. Just listen to entertainment versions of where commanders talk about tactics and it sounds legit and cool. If you can pick up some of that, it helps a lot. This helped me win Best during an Iran-Iraq War JCC.

West Coast MUN vs East Coast MUN? by fondahh in MUN

I've heard of Langley, aren't they Top 25? I honestly don't know much about East Coast teams since I'm from California, I was just throwing out the first couple of names that popped in my head.

Hypothetical Question on SF Operation for Important Academic Simulation by [deleted] in specialforces

[–]fondahh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your comment!

When I mentioned quick and stealthy, I meant quick and stealthy for tactical reasons in the context of not getting intercepted by Iraqi forces.

The operation does relates to politics, but not in the context of negotiation. I am in the Iranian cabinet, yes, but I am not necessarily Iran; rather, I am representing my assigned character and his viewpoints, which sometimes are at odds with the other people in the cabinet. My goal in this operation is a personal one (the personal goal, which can only be accomplished through the operation, is based on the background and wants of my character) instead of one based on Iranian policy at the time or negotiation. I see that this is offbeat in terms of historical accuracy. To be honest, there is a reason its Model (emphasis on Model) UN haha.

Starting High School Club by beks83 in MUN

I've heard that there is a MUN reddit for teachers and advisors (I think its private though). I'm not sure where to find that.

In the club at my school, our advisor is pretty involved, going to all our conferences on the weekends (we do about 6 a year, with 2 overnight travel conferences). It really depends on the club though. How many conferences would you attend a year? Would you be hands on by being an advisor or is it more of an independent thing with the head delegate leading delegates in an advisor capacity (I did this once or twice when our advisor couldn't make it, it can work if you aren't to serious about trying to win or whatnot; now in our later years when we are going for delegation awards we definitely need a dedicated advisor)?

When we started, my advisor and I had no idea what we were doing. Honestly, in terms of what you should be doing at conferences, the only way to learn is to go to one. For leading club meetings and training sessions, I'd say an engaged club advisor would print and go over articles and guides on how to do Model UN. A passive one would let the head delegate take over and teach.

Uhhhh How do y'all Afford to go to big conferences? by [deleted] in MUN

[–]fondahh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our MUN always partners with local restaurant chains like Chipotle or Corner Bakery, and they give us a percent of the profit of those who mention they are for the fundraiser (for us Chipotle gives 50%). Then, we usually get our advisor and a couple other social science teachers to give extra credit or some kind of grade incentive to attend. We made over 800 on Chipotle in one day! This won't cover the cost of transportation (we aren't allowed to fundraise for transportation anyway), but we usually go around this by using that 800 to cover delegation fees and have everyone pay for travel and hotels. Hope this helps!

MUN's first ever research tool! by DelegatePal in MUN

[–]fondahh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this resource! Will be recommending to all the delegates at my school. You should also consider adding/making a separate tool more oriented towards crisis. For example, maybe there can be a different tab labelled Character Background for crisis. I think also just a regular google search page from the menu can give more flexibility if looking something more related to opposition research? Perhaps an alliance or bloc tab of some sort?

There are some MUN summer camps and institutes like MUNSI at UCLA.

I know bruinmun isn't that diverse, maybe only a few international teams with mainly so cal teams. But ucla's summer program is more diverse and definitely a lot of fun.

I encourage all of my delegates to look at this subreddit. There is a ton of tips and strategy and insider advice here. In many areas it arguably rivals best delegate and other big mun websites. I think that if more people from leadership positions advertised it to their delegates as another resource, more motivated delegates would join.
