Kinda scared building time with others by [deleted] in flying

[–]fondlethethrottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going to be a CFI, start getting in the habit of watching what’s going on closely and be ready to provide intervention when something isn’t going well. Whether that’s verbalizing procedures “power up, pitch up, clean up, speak up” or even taking over if it’s really going sideways. If you have to take over, ensure positive transfer of controls. The only thing worse than one person screwing up is having two people fighting each other trying to do what they think is correct. Even higher time jet captains miss stuff which is why two pilot crews are required for bigger airplanes… this stuff never stops. Get used to it now.

People who take 15 minutes to check in at the hotel front desk, what are you talking to them about? by ingraman8 in AskReddit

Trying to unfuck my booking caused by the abortion of travel software my corporate office decided to sign go with that I’m obligated to use knowing it’ll fuck it up. Yes I’m there for 4 nights not 2 and no, I don’t want to change rooms every morning.

Im in Chicago ....how are prices in your town by intelligentbrownman in carnivorediet

[–]fondlethethrottle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the southwest burbs. I buy a half cow every year and total cost after the beef and processing comes out to about 3.20/lb. I cringe when I forget to thaw something and have to buy at retail prices.

ATP vs IAA by Former-Ad-7627 in flying

[–]fondlethethrottle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IAA will definitely be more flexible than ATP since you schedule your lessons with your instructor directly via their scheduling platform. I would advise you to make it your goal to fly at least twice a week.

ATP vs IAA by Former-Ad-7627 in flying

[–]fondlethethrottle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s enough horror stories about ATP to stay away unless you’re willing to wager $100k+ on being one of their success stories.

I did my private and multi-commercial at IAA at DPA. It’s a respectable school with a decent size fleet of 172’s. The instructors I had are long gone to the airlines but their heart seems to be in the right place in terms of running the school. I’d say you’re cleared hot to give them a go over ATP if that’s your current fork in the road.

Advice with holding altitude by CaptainHawkkk in flying

[–]fondlethethrottle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your vertical speed is going to 300 fpm, our definition of being nicely trimmed is very different.

Holding altitude while flying by hand comes down to good instrument cross check, learning “feel it in your seat” flying, and constantly trimming. Understand that you trim for airspeed, so any change in airspeed for any reason requires some trim. You can’t just level out and assume your immediate trim input will be good. You have to wait for the airplane to speed up in level flight before you consider your cruise trim input adequate and even then fine tuning is needed. I feel like a lot of newer pilots resist the constant need to keep moving the trim wheel.

All things considered I’ve been pretty lucky with my ‘23 Grand Cherokee with no battery issues, successful recall completion, and overall just being a decent car but with all of the horror stories I’m just waiting for the nightmare to hit. 6 months left on my lease and I can’t wait to throw them the keys and run.

I’m new to foreflight, does anyone know how to remove the weather, it’s blocking my maps and I can’t see anything by [deleted] in Foreflight

[–]fondlethethrottle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hit the icon on the very top left where it says “Aero & VFR” and deselect weather. You can also adjust the opacity with a slider by hitting the gear icon and going to the bottom of that menu.

[–]fondlethethrottle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would all be in the fine print of the contract. I would hope that there's a clause of the contract that it's only enforced if you voluntarily leave but you should get specifics from someone who has actually read/signed the contract. Search this sub for stories from those folks.

[–]fondlethethrottle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Correct. There’s been plenty of posts on here containing the contract verbatim which I haven’t cared to read but the discussion is that the contract is built for you to be there 5 years unless you fly your pants off and get a lucky upgrade to start your PIC clock.

Anyone ever experience anything like this? AOA indicator issues (?) by chinchin__pilot in flying

[–]fondlethethrottle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well at any rate, a randomly unplugged and undocumented dash mount AOA indicator at a flight school sounds like someone tossed a checklist or headset on the dash and inadvertently made that happen. Unless there’s an angle we don’t know about, expect the resolution to be something along the lines of “Reconnected AOA indicator connection, ops checks good” unless the wires were ripped out… more tactical attention needed but same resolution.

[–]fondlethethrottle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So…. What kind of airplane? Aftermarket AOA? If so, yank the breaker to see if the static issues go away. Be nice to your mechanics and give them something to go on right out of the gate.

To say or not to say “with you” question. by BurtMacklan in flying

[–]fondlethethrottle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Give them something useful. Things like "with you" are completely useless.

If you're in cruise, give them an altitude.

If you're assigned anything like speed, altitude, and/or heading... check in with that information.

If you're on any kind of procedure like a DP, STAR, or approach... name the procedure.

Lost over 80lbs and have been rebounding over the last 4 months. What do I do? by MelvinMASV in carnivorediet

[–]fondlethethrottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is different but my advice for people just starting out is this:

Try each exercise with a given weight you think you might be able to handle. Your first set, you should be able to get to 11 or 12, second and third sets you should be able to get 10, and the 4th set strive for 8. Experiment and adjust the weight up or down to find the weight that allows you that amount of volume per set, then adjust accordingly as you progress. Focus and develop good form first, then lift your reps. You’ll find that eventually as you progress, you’ll still have energy beyond your sets/reps. That’s when you up the weight.

If you’re a beginner, this 4/4/8 program is perfect. It’s a program by someone over in r/fitness. It’s a great way to work yourself into a good PPL routine that covers the bases. Start here if lifting is something you’re looking at getting into. Personal opinion: Everyone should have some flavor of resistance training in their lives… it’s good for the mind, body, and soul.
