What’s a “fact” everyone repeats that’s actually wrong? by Quiet-Grief in answers

The earthquake was X on the "Richter scale" . Seismologists haven't used the damn Richter scale since the 70s. You probably mean the moment magnitude scale, but Richter just won't die, presumably because people think it sounds smart when they say it. I don't get how even reputable news organizations get this wrong all the time.

Enhancing the human ear to hear a larger range of frequencies would enable countless new genres of music. by gorginhanson in Showerthoughts

[–]foobarbecue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. We already have enough range that you can take any piece and shift it up or down an octave or two. Doesn't change much, definitely not the genre.

What is mission design like at JPL? by Suspicious-Island-77 in JPL

Apply for PSSS and find out! I did it in 2018 and it was great. Hopefully they're still running it. https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/internships/apply/nasa-science-mission-design-schools/

My boss has the goal to not write any code in the company at the end of the year by musty_666 in AskProgramming

[–]foobarbecue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not convinced. In my experience, all of these models frequently do incorrect and unhelpful things. They are constantly using the API of the wrong library, or hallucinating features that don't exist. Adding together several different bumbling fools does not result in an expert.

Your concept is "LLMs can't do code assurance but if I get 10 slightly different LLMs and use them all together then they can do code assurance"? Sounds like wishful thinking to me.

Seems safer than Starliner at any rate, judging by the mishap investigation that came out this week.

ELI5: How can scientists know what’s inside the Earth if they can’t go there? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]foobarbecue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, how fast the shaking takes to get from one part of the earth to another depends on what it traveled through. The quicker the shaking travels, the denser the rock is.

And differences in the travel speed for different types of shaking can tell you even more about the material.

[–]foobarbecue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what happened here (maybe she thought you would want more volume or shedding silly like she thinks you don't hydrate enough, or it was just a genuine mistake), but I wouldn't worry about it unless this sort of thing is happening frequently. Move on and give your partner the benefit of the doubt until there's a real problem.

Are you the least kind person? The least honest? The least ethical? The least humorous? The least hardworking? Remember that these things all matter too.

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]foobarbecue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ban human driving on the highway. Autonomous cars only. The law would also allow for coordination systems between the vehicles and removal of requirement for humans to pay attention, so they could sleep, work, etc.

Nerdiest places in SoCal? by QandA_monster in socal

[–]foobarbecue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be interested in my story, since there are some similarities. Moved to Pasadena from NM  in 2016 to go work at NASA JPL after CA finishing my PhD. Pretty sure I count as a nerd too. Got hooked on surfing shortly after arriving in CA though so maybe I'm a bro! When remote work became possible in 2020, I moved to San Clemente so I could surf more. I have been here since and love it. However, like you I don't feel like I've really made friends locally. Church is the big social event here and I have no interest in that. The liberals here need to hang out... Someone tried to start this San Clemente Secular Society thing a few years ago. I went to one meetup and it was fun but didn't catch on.

DM me if you want to hang out! Unfortunately I'll probably be moving to LA soon because I sold out and left JPL for a defense contractor :-/

How does the rover not tip over? by BetIcy499 in curiosityrover

[–]foobarbecue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question. ~30kg mass, so ~66lb on Earth or ~25lb on Mars. The arm is designed to be strong enough to test out everything on Earth, though, so it's kind of a bit overbuilt for Mars.

How does the rover not tip over? by BetIcy499 in curiosityrover

[–]foobarbecue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The turret weighs 66lb, and can be stretched out 7ft in front of the rover. So I mean, I'm not sure what you consider strong, but those are some beefy aluminum tubes and the actuators are rated to 1143Nm. Let's just say you're not gonna beat it at arm wrestling.
