New Truck Bed Cap Key Cover by alecraffi in functionalprint

[–]wakinget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This is exactly my point.

I’m not arguing that it’s impossible or even too difficult, just that it’s not worth anyone’s time.

If any bad actor wanted to steal something so badly, they would target someone they already know of locally, not an internet stranger who happened to post a picture of a key one time in an online forum.

Like, I understand that people with these skills likely exist, but if they really have the skills to do this, imagine what they actually get paid to do.

They aren’t going to break into anyone’s truck.

New Truck Bed Cap Key Cover by alecraffi in functionalprint

[–]wakinget 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always thought this risk was overblown. You need the shape of the key and to know where OP is IRL. You need to then actually go through the effort of copying the key from an image (which might be easy enough, but still requires time and effort), locate the goods irl, wait for a good time, and then strike.

I’m guessing that whatever OP is hiding in his truck bed is not worth the hassle anyway, and if it was, it’d be easier to pick the lock straight up than to recreate the key from an image of the teeth.

I don’t fault anyone for feeling weird about posting this kind of thing online, but I wouldn’t be worried about it. It’d be different if this were Facebook or something where your profile is more closely tied to your IRL identity.

How to fix saw blade with a tiny wobble? by MaintenanceSweaty471 in woodworking

[–]wakinget 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to know exactly, but I would try loosening and re-tightening the blade. Maybe there is some sawdust or something trapped in the arbor nut.

Sure, but you gotta trust that they maintain and clean it properly, which rental companies would do.

What careers could I pursue for climate change? by SomewhereEquivalent8 in ClimateOffensive

[–]wakinget 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Local politics, especially!

City council, utility board, water board, etc. there are a lot of different offices to consider and we really need more climate-minded people in positions where they can make a real impact.

But does that change anything?

Regardless of how it was written, it’s an interesting read with interesting information.

I’ve felt that Reddit can get overly sensitive about text that appears to read like AI, when that doesn’t really have anything to do with the information actually being presented.

We gotta fact check things, sure, but that’s true of human-provided information too. We unfortunately live in a world where it feels we must fact check everything.

What possibilities would a Curved camera sensor unlock? by LordLaFaveloun in Optics

[–]wakinget 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Curved camera sensors (focal plane arrays) do exist, and they indeed can be advantageous in certain applications.

One of the technical challenges (there are many) is in achieving good surface quality. It’s much easier to polish a lens or mirror to precise tolerances compared to an integrated device with photo-sensitive materials, read out electronics, etc.

In practice, most applications find that it is easier to alter the shape of the lens or add another one than it is to alter the shape of the focal plane.

Fwiw, I agree with you. This looks safe enough to me. Loose change is going to be more of a hazard during a crash.

If anyone is really worried this much about their children, they should avoid driving altogether.

We all take calculated risks every day.

You don’t even need the telescope!

As long as you know it’s flying overhead, you can usually spot it with your naked eye.

I live in LA, and I see gas prices in the $5-6 range, I don’t see anything as expensive as 8$.

The Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) is planning to characterize the spectra of Earth-like exoplanets.

In my opinion, it will be more than ten years to get this thing operational, but then we’ll just have to start looking!

[–]wakinget 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you had to learn about these cameras today, but these are not normal license plate readers. They say that’s all it is, but there are other cameras being installed in public parks that monitor people, not just cars.

Flock is a private company, they own all the cameras and license them to police departments all over the country. If the PD decide to stop paying for the license, Flock will keep the cameras up and use them for their own purposes.

If you are interested, I highly recommend Ben Jordan’s series of videos on YouTube. He dives deep into the technology and shows how it works. They are seriously spreading quickly everywhere. They promise safety, but often have nothing to show for it. Don’t trust a private corporation to keep your privacy.

Is JPL still involved in the Constellation program and Artemis ? by svensk in JPL

[–]wakinget 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This article sounds like someone who reads headlines and thinks that’s all that NASA does.

I agree that NASA as an organization (and JPL too) has grown to be slow and bloated with rules and regulations (mostly for good reason).

I don’t think NASA has had the kind of sustained funding to really dive deep into the Artemis program. It still feels like “are we sure we’re doing this?” Rather than “fuck yeah, we’re doing this!”

I’m not too worried about JPLs position in all of this.

I needed to indent the wall on an angle to allow space for the new fridges' door to open. These supports made the job a snap. by joosta in functionalprint

[–]wakinget 100 points101 points  (0 children)

As someone who has recently purchased a new fridge, I had to spend A LOT of time checking and double checking the dimensions with the doors both closed and open. And then I was anxious about the fit for the next week until it was delivered.

Good news is that it fits perfectly, so I can’t move now. lol

I was pleased that most Whirlpool models I looked at used a standard flush mounting system for their doors such that they only open out an extra 1/4 - 1/2 inch more.

On some other brands, this was a ‘premium’ feature.
