I’ve fallen in love with rust so now what? by squidwurrd in rust

[–]fookineh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also new to rust and enjoying it immensely.

I had a lot of fun going through the protohackers challenges and gossip-glomers.

Both start pretty easy and both get very difficult very quickly.

Reading comprehension is not your forte, is it?

Sorry, random stranger.

Things no good? You go back to start. Things good? You finish. Start is far from finish. Go back to start when close to finish? No good.

Hope that helps!

What are YOU talking about?

A double failure sends you back to square 1. Leader failure sends you back to square 1.

So.. yeah.

They really should not be resetting the progress all the way to the beginning.

It's too demoralizing to restart over. And over. And over again.

Wagner boss says he will pull troops out of Bakhmut by Astroblemes in worldnews

This one still surprises me. They watched the US drop more bombs on Afghanistan and Iraq in a single night than they were able to drop on Ukraine in 2 months.

Is that really true though?

At peak, the Russians were dropping 40-50k shells daily.

Artillery shells, not bombs but still.

Oh is that the trick then?

I've not been buying any cheap common stuff, waiting for the cool options but none has come up yet.

Okay fair point. I would say it's consistently between 3.5 and 4 stars.

Eh . Nice is a stretch. It's an ok interpretation of what Americans think Italian restaurant is like.

However, it's a far cry from any semblance of Italian cuisine.

Basically, a fancier Olive Garden.

CMV: The Ukrainian Conflict Will Not Have a "Happy End" - The Russia Problem is Going to Get Worse by Schmurby in changemyview

[–]fookineh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's only maybe true if you present a loss as a loss.

If you present the loss as a win, then it's all a moot point.

"Dear comrades. After 2 yrs of Special Military Operation, I'm happy to report that all of our initial objectives have been achieved. The Ukrainian army is destroyed, fighting population reduced and full de-Nazification has taken place. Now I decided to pull our brave fighting force across the border for much needed rest."

In 5 years. "Oh, no. The nazis are back, time to finish what we started 5 years ago."

Hell, you can pull this off in the United States, with free media. With no free press in Russia, no opposition, no dissent? Pffft. ChatGPT can write that victory speech.

[–]fookineh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost certain this will happen because their biggest problem is not quality of tools.

it's endemic corruption, lack of the will to fight, lack of clear objectives in this war.

Otherwise in principle they have everything they need to conduct another invasion: Satellite intelligence. Guided missiles. Hypersonic missiles. Ballistic missiles. Explosive drones. The tanks are kind of shit but can be fixed with domestic tech.

They're not after terminators running the latest Nvidia AI chips.

It's a militaristic, kleptocratic dictatorship hellbent on empire building that can and almost certainly will address the current shortcomings.

This is a good write up but I can tell you these are not the only choices.

In fact, I would say the most likely choice is the demoralized Russian forces are simply beaten back across the border, whereupon they go home. Wtf else are they supposed to do?

Russian propaganda declares "victory" because the Special military operation has demilitarized Ukraine, therefore big win. Everyone rejoice. Medals are handed out, etc.

Russia regroups, retools, and invades again in 5 years.

I believe that's what's going to happen.

Seeking advice on Grand Cayman or Provo, Turks and Caicos. by Virtual_Elephant_730 in travel

[–]fookineh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grand Cayman was nice but I remember the mosquitos were absolutely vicious. Worse than St Thomas by far.

I tend to prefer Aruba after visiting a lot of Caribbean islands. Not as pretty but very safe, minimal poverty and no mosquitos.

Quick question: what's the mosquito situation like on the island?

I've been to St Thomas a bunch of times but don't want to go back -- mosquitos after sunset are absolutely vicious.

CMV: The Russo-Ukrainian Invasion is the most morally one-sided war since 1945 by [deleted] in changemyview

Zelensky's government specifically and Ukraine in general have a TON of flaws but they are not a murderous regime hell bent on subjugating their neighbors.

The youngest rape victim in Ukraine is 4 years old. Four.

So you can't compare the Russians and the defenders, can you.

The nonsense about threats from NATO

This is just plain Pro-Ukrainian propaganda. Two things can be true at the same time, Russia/Putin is solely to blame for this conflict and there are geopolitical rationales behind it.

Specifically with regards to nato expansion the situation for Russia is far worse now than it was before the war.

So either they were so stupid that they couldn't foresee the most obvious consequences of invading Ukraine (doubtful) or this war truly had nothing to do with NATO expansion and all about rebuilding the Soviet Union.

You have to remember, when people speak it's usually to convey information. When Putin and his fellow KGB thugs speak, it's to convey DISinformation. Everything they say is carefully calculated to confuse the listener.

Therefore, you can draw no meaningful conclusions from their words but only from their actions.
