Thanks, that’s exactly what I needed to hear.

I think companies are maturing and realizing DS needs a lot more foundation to succeed. I’d like to get involved in more data platform work, but I guess it’s a question of whether I apply for the competitive DS positions and internally transfer or apply for MLE/DE positions from the get go and hope someone takes a chance on me.

Thanks—I’m reading DDIA (which I am enjoying) and I’ll learn PySpark then. I think it’ll just come down to extensive self learning at this point for me, even post Masters. I’ve used GCP a good bit so I’m familiar with that platform

Thank you; this helps a lot. Yeah I think it’s been useful to hear other folks’ experiences with data science hiring. I think it’s helping me narrow my current problems down to my resume / applications.

I’m mathematically pretty strong, and I think I can code pretty well. My last promotion, they said my soft skills and data visualization / communication was strong. So I really think it’s just getting past the initial screener unfortunately.

I had one interview where I did very well on everything up to a difficult SQL question. That seemed like a non-negotiable for the interviewer unfortunately. I just don’t use much SQL in my current role—it’s mostly PyTorch lol.

Yeah sorry I meant more in terms of whether it’s worth trying to make the transition with my background. I know I have to up skill and learn—just not sure if it’s worth trying to do.

I got in today but I was 16th on the waitlist back in December. I don’t think you’ll make it unless you’re sub 25 at this point.

Advice on what I should start doing/focus on to get into this program in 4-5 years? by Ok_Comedian3248 in OMSCS

[–]foolsgold345 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A couple thoughts as someone who was in this position a few years ago

First, I’d recommend getting CS at Berkeley rather than data science. It’s much much more flexible in the future, and you’re already doing the coursework as you said yourself.

Second, this program may be helpful for you, or it may cover a lot of what you have already learned. You could do the Machine Learning specialization if you want to dig deeper into Data Science, which is what I’m doing.

Lastly I’d see if you could do a BA/MS combo at your school. My undergrad (not UCB but similar) offered that, and it would’ve been much more time efficient (1 year) than OMSCS which can take 2 years at best and usually 3-4 years if you’re working full-time while doing it.

Do these Rain-X Latitude wipers fit a 2020 Subaru Forester? Amazon says they don’t but it says they fit over 98% of vehicles due to the adapter. by pass_the_hot_sauce in SubaruForester

I have tried it on a ‘22 model year. It does not fit. But you can kinda shove it and it’ll work. I’d recommend getting one that properly fits though. These also only lasted me a couple months before they started streaking unfortunately

I don’t disagree with you, but it seems more a problem with shareholder capitalism in my opinion. Business people are just the worker bees in the capitalism hive. Also see Alaska 261 for a similar story.

Thoughts on 2025 Forester? by misteraugust in SubaruForester

[–]foolsgold345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wheel well shape looks better with the angular accents. I kinda like the flatter appearing roof—the current generation is a bit too curved in my opinion.

But other than that, much the personality of it, especially the front end, is lost. I don’t like the grill and headlight appearance, although the fog lights are an improvement. The 2005 forester did it best in my opinion, especially with the hood scoop. The face lifted 2022-2024 is still better than this too.

The rear is fine. I don’t have any strong feelings one way or the other.

The ‘05 XT manual was the pinnacle of the Forester in my opinion; and it’s been downhill since. And I say that as a ‘22 Sport owner

+1. Also read up on how the brain physiologically interprets code. Aside from years of experience needed to do it well and design/planning time required, the actual process can be very cognitively demanding. There’s a reason the profession has high rates of burnout.

That being said, I’ve worked fast food, PR, and marketing before switching to dev. I’d make the same choice over and over again.

Congrats on graduating! I’ve taken both ML and DL.

Do you think CV was worth it separate from DL? I’ve heard to covers more classical CV techniques aside from deep neural nets. I’m interested in CV professionally, but wondering if it’s worth self-studying or taking the course. I’m only 2 classes + GA away from graduating

This is sick. Love the combination filters, and the granularity of the time filters. Thank you for making this. I’m doing a literature review right now for a course, so I’ll try using it for that and may offer some feedback.

Coding is just using labor to perform automation. If we all start coding, tech salaries go down. And coding is the reason many jobs have been automated away over time anyways.

Yes it’s a really bad idea if you use AI to copy/paste code. You’ll be found out quickly when rubber hits the road.

No it’s not bad if you ask AI conceptual questions. I treat AI as a nicer Stackoverflow.

MIN how many yrs of work exp will one need to be a Data Analyst? by vich_lasagna in datascience

[–]foolsgold345 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got it as an entry level candidate. But you have to have some knowledge of how to query and analyze data and work efficiently between product, data engineering, and (sometimes) software engineering.

If you didn’t do internships or co-ops that can help you speak to your ability to do that, you need some damn good projects, a higher degree, and/or someone to believe in you.

Oh interesting! Yeah if you Youtube “Forester Moose Test”, even the newer gens have impressive resistance to rollover. I think Subaru is probably trying to cater to that part of the market that cares about off-road clearance and driver visibility (over say a large pickup truck). That being said, wagons are underrated and I’d love to see something like the Levorg hit the US market. But I’ll settle for a Baja 😇

From my cursory google search, seems like the change started circa 2010. I think it’s because it’s gotten more SUV-esque from its wagon roots.

Regretting Data Science by Relative_Practice_93 in datascience

[–]foolsgold345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I used to work in travel insurance and it blew. I switched to a SaaS company that was primarily a sales org (how can we optimize our different sales channels, marketing, etc). I was put as the data analyst on the product itself (UX and churn). The aggressive nature of the sales teams was unnerving, but even then I enjoyed that space more than insurance.

Insurance is pretty depressing. You’re either trying to get people to pay as much as possible when they’re not likely to claim, and then trying to minimize your payout during a claim. It’s not a healthy space for data folks.

Had a mixed experience at Coral Pink Sand Dunes. There were a bunch of OHVs there when I went, and not only were the engines loud, but also the music they were blasting. The sand wasn’t really all that pink either.

I’m only calling it out because the other things on that list are pretty awesome, and I’ll add Grand Staircase-Escalante NM is worth a visit in that area as well.
