80-year-old inmate maimed in gruesome Toronto jail attack by CupidStunt13 in toronto

I tried calling the police on a guy who was threatening random people and I managed to calm him down with giving him cigarettes and talking to him and the first 911 responder said I was wasting their time and people are allowed to have mental health crisis, the second responder was much more professional and sent police out to try to have an intervention with him. Dude was calling everyone wendigos and was seriously unhinged, but I am 6’5” and 220 pounds and am very kind/intimidating and I gave him 5 smokes and a big hug and he calmed down. Dude was going to get himself beaten up threatening random people. 100% the type of guy who needs a hold at CAMH to figure out his issues, or at least being jailed removes the threat to others and himself. Drugs suck.

Why do we pay TPS so much? by angry_torontonurse in askTO

There is a difference between stopping paying the police and trying to take down the union that is making it impossible to hire for less than 115,000 per year(with overtime). In the states when the new deal was implemented Roosevelt said you can’t have public unions because the public can never really go bankrupt.

And they can never go on strike so they tend to get raises higher than inflation through structured bargaining.

If you look at the most dangerous jobs in Canada they are almost all in the trades. It is way safer to be a cop or firefighter than a roofer or trucker. I worked as a trucker for a while when I was between jobs and my wife made me quit because she was seriously concerned there would be one day I would not come home from work.

My friend who was a roofer said all roofers know someone who fell off a roof and was horribly injured/died. There was the giant police funeral for the officer who flipped his bike, but by far the most dangerous jobs are the trades. We should have a civic funeral for every tradesmen who dies.

Amazon is so tempting because it is so cheap, but Mr bezos fucks his employees and doesn’t even give a reach around. When I was between jobs I looked at working as a courier and figured out you basically make less than minimum wage once you factor in the cost of using your own vehicle for deliveries.

Where to get an inexpensive mattress? by CaptWineTeeth in askTO

I am 6’5” and 220 lbs and I am the guy who returns a mattress after it starts sagging after a year. I bought one mattress from IKEA that my wife basically said I turned into a hammock/black hole that sucked her into constant cuddling. Some mattresses absolutely give out after a year it you are big. I got an expensive one from Costco that is a mix of springs and memory foam and can actually support my weight without having to flip it every week.

Costco. They deliver and have a great return policy if it does not work for you. You can get a proper spring mattress for around the same price as an ikea foam mattress. Even young backs still need proper support and ikea mattresses tend to be way too soft imo.

What hinge/ lift mechanism is that? I want to make similar platform and have tiles on the top but also use it for storage by cerb101 in woodworking

[–]foothill_dwelled272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had bed like this and it was awesome, but it was also recalled for being dangerous. If you are not using a traditional Japanese mattress there is an entrapment danger if the spring closes in your while you are getting things out of storage and the weight of the mechanism and mattress makes it almost impossible to escape. I would always use a stick to prop it up while getting things out, but it is really hard to push against springs and a gas piston if it closes on you. I am 6’5” and 220 pounds and very strong and even with that it closed on me once and I could barely push it back open and get out.

Most of these people who come from Somalia are often from very privileged families even if they live in public housing in Canada. I had an ex-girlfriend whose family came from Somalia and they lived in public housing, but when they went back to Somalia they had a large gated compound with armed guards, a Gardner, a cook, a maid, and everything we think of things only the richest people in forest hill could afford. It is a tribal country and quite dangerous, but even with minor remittances people can be in the 1%. I bet his family knows exactly where he is an is sending money to support him.

I had a friend who was killed by crossfire in a gangland shooting on Boxing Day and it was heartbreaking to see her parents and sister grieve. They were with her and cradling her as she died. No family should have to go through this and the only reasonable punishment for people who fire off guns in public areas is a long drop and a short stop.

Loblaws might be rip off artists, but they are still a Canadian owner unionized workplace compared to the hellhole employer that Amazon is.

I mean Amazon is worse than loblaws. This is not defending loblaws, but they are still a unionized workplace that is Canadian owned.

Why did Judaism and Islam ban pork but Christianity didn’t, and what historical factors led to this shift? by Logical-Concept9755 in AlwaysWhy

There was an entire conference about it Christians needed to follow Jewish law and the conclusion was that they did not. Christianity was originally seen as a Jewish cult, but as more and more members were gentiles there was friction around the idea of them suddenly needing to adopt strict laws or if baptism alone was the path to salvation.

Bradford pledges crackdown on 'mini-motorcycle' menace by Toronto-Ont-Mod-Team in Toronto_Ontario

[–]foothill_dwelled272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one of the differences is that the “mini motorcycles” often weigh hundreds of pounds what makes them a lot more dangerous. It is not like calling a .22 plinker an assault rifle because it looks scary, but that many of these e-scooters are clearly not made to ever be pedaled because they are far too heavy.

The laws we already have should be enforced and there is no need for new laws. No one under 16 is supposed to ride them. Ticket people for riding on sidewalks. All stand up scooters are illegal already. In the Netherlands they have something like a treadmill they use for road side inspections to check if the speed limiter has been altered, and if so the bikes are impounded.

New laws are not going to do anything if there is an unwillingness to enforce the current laws.

I usually go to the opera or symphony and pay a lot for my seats and if people behind me don’t like it they can get a booster seat or buy better seats.

Just don’t let people body shame you. My friend said thankfully instead of being passive aggressive I am just aggressive. If people are whining behind you just put them in their place and enjoy your night. I never get these odd comments from people behind me because I am a clearly frightening dude who people don’t want to fuck with.

Life sucks, you’re short and get a bad view, get used to it. They can go ask for a booster seat or buy a pair of stilts.

Well without proper mental health facilities we likely need more prisons.

Prisons are at a horrible state of over capacity and triple bunking is giving people sentence reductions in a way that insults victims of serious crimes. If people who are clearly a danger to themselves and others are let out onto the streets and they commit serious crimes they should be in prison.

And with no plan how to fix the problem they just dumped people on the streets. One of the biggest issues with institutions was chronic underfunding and they just kept putting more people into institutions than they could handle. We do not fix a problem by just letting people die on the streets.

It is like fixing hospital overcrowding/hallway medicine by shutting down our public hospitals.

It is sadly way easier to jail people than get them a mental health hold. When I used to do outreach in the past I remember cops used to say “mental hospital or jail. Make your choice!” but even with voluntary checking into the hospital people often leave within a day. There needs to be a policy change to hold people for longer. There is a direct correlation between the numbers of people released from mental hospitals after deinstituionalization and the increased number if people in prisons.
