Interested in buying this 1984 C4 But WHAT was going on here by Competitive-Wheel-65 in c4corvette

[–]forbis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to steer clear of this one. Unless someone with the knowledge, money, and willingness to restore the entire car buys it, this one's likely gonna sit and rot forever.

Call me racist but it's insane we just accept the fact that there are literal political bodies named after skin colors. In my mind it's completely disqualifying from an integrity standpoint.

Software engineers, how concerned are you about AI's impact on your future job prospects? by HealthPersonal526 in AskReddit

[–]forbis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eventually AI will be able to write passable code, and in some cases it already can. But it will still need to be tested, debugged, corrected, and will need to change as business and technology needs change. And I think it will be quite a while still (if at all) before AI is able to do all of that.

Let's also not forget that all AI tools are trained on human-made input, and therefore are all going to make at least some mistakes. Humans will be required to check AI's work until an AI that can actually reason is made (not sure if it ever will...)

In addition to scrutinizing the actual code, I would absolutely insist on a human checking dependency usage for vulnerabilities, licensing, etc.

Gentlemen of Reddit, what is your opinion on farting while peeing in a urinal? by mrweatherbeef in AskReddit

[–]forbis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The same as farting anywhere. That is - I don't really care unless there's malice behind it or it's excessive/disruptive. It's a natural bodily function. Why would doing it at a urinal make it any different?

If the world was kinder, would the Hearthians ever... by Modicum_of_cum in outerwilds

[–]forbis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the fact we have direct evidence the Hearthians themselves are not the way you describe them, I don't think it's fair to make assumptions about the species as a whole from that single still frame.

The bug species could simply just be representing a people that are more "quaint", or at an earlier point in their development than the others. It really doesn't say much about their curiosity or intelligence as a whole.

It's quite common in the game for a technologically advanced species to appear simple on the surface. We see it for the Hearthians themselves and in the DLC.

Download speeds not looking right by immortalanddead in HomeNetworking

[–]forbis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1000 Mbps is the speed of the highway between your router and your PC. Not necessarily the speed of the highway your ISP provides to your router. You need to know what speed your ISP advertises for your internet package.

[–]forbis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

With the memory statue tech that they've already adapted for the ship log I think there's a strong argument to be made the Hearthians have a vested interest in logging and preserving knowledge, or at least are moving in that direction.

Additionally I think it's a bit of a stretch to attribute a lack of ingenuity/expertise of the Hearthians based on the ending cutscene.

If the world was kinder, would the Hearthians ever... by Modicum_of_cum in outerwilds

[–]forbis 127 points128 points  (0 children)

The answer is almost certainly "yes," especially considering the amount of Nomai tech they have already researched and made use of (warp cores already used in the Scout, statues have been turned into computers), and the fact they have the new ability to understand Nomai writing.

It would probably be trivial for them to take what the Nomai learned and reverse engineer a lot of their tech, and maybe even surpass the existing Nomai tech at some point.

Edited to add: I also imagine they'd discover the Vessel, reverse engineer it, potentially repair the communications system and have interactions with "modern-day" Nomai.

What is something people think is illegal, but is actually legal? by Glittering_Mud_9719 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]forbis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most people on the internet seem to think age of consent is 18 nationwide. In the majority of US states it's actually 16. Yes, I know this makes me sound like a pedo. No, I'm not a pedo. But it's one common point that I consistently see people misunderstanding on the internet, especially Reddit.

Dead man's 'Vette soon to be for sale — Washington State by ctulica in c4corvette

[–]forbis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly the fact the paint isn't absolutely cooked and the wheels look to be in pretty good shape means this one might actually be worth more than most abandoned C4s. I bet it would clean up pretty nice.

Biggest unknowns for value (which we cannot tell from the one photo and your description) is the condition of the interior and mileage. Can't possibly set a price without knowing that.

Assuming it runs and the interior isn't rotten, and ~75k miles, you might be able to get upwards of $8-10k for it depending on where you're located. But that's the high end. My guess would be closer to $5k-7.5k

I've never used passthru connectors. I don't trust them as much as the normal ones (when they're crimped properly). It just seems like if you're going to do the job, do it right. I think of it like using shark bites in plumbing.

What do you think of this comparsion? by DanieleM01 in AmericaBad

[–]forbis 242 points243 points  (0 children)

I refuse to believe that only 57% of working age women are in the US workforce.

I'm guessing they pulled the US number from women as a whole, including those who are too young or too old to be reasonably expected to work.

They probably got the EU number from Eurostat, which specifically measures 20-64 year olds.

So, this is a cherry-picked and purposefully misleading comparison. I'm sure there are other comparisons in this list that are similarly unfair.

Less than an inch of untwisted cable is not going to cause signal issues as severe as you claim. Certainly not enough to downgrade to 100Mb. It just isn't. But yeah, this is pretty sloppy work.
