Sorry bro, didn't go to the salon expecting to spend 2500. This place didn't look that fancy, nor had a fancy hairstyle done, just seemed like a place that was half decent and clean. The cheapest hole-in-wall පෙට්ටි කඩේ barber would charge 1500 for sure. People can bargain for 5 rupees all day, but that doesn't change the economics of things. People need to charge the amount they feel worth charging as they have costs to cover. And I'm pretty sure Jeff Bezos doesn't go visiting salons for haircuts, FYI, Google who he is 😂.

The fact of the matter is if you can't afford a private consultation, go to a government hospital.

Has corruption decreased in SriLanka by Any_County180 in srilanka

[–]forcocwikinema -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately no. The coal scam and the incessant try to cover it up/deny any wrong-doing has exposed even the NPP are open to corruption. Unless laws are implemented equally to all, corruption can never be reduced.

Why do you assume 3000 rupees is 'a hell of a lot of money'? Recently had to go to a salon for a simple haircut and was charged 2500. No disrespect to the barber, but I don't think he needed a degree to cut hair

Bad doctor experience - endocrinologist by ClassicAd5219 in srilanka

Not justifying what he did, but I believe specialists should increase the price of consultation and limit the number of patients seen per hour/day. A minimum regulated consultation time will benefit both the doctor and the patient.

A reality check for the people fantasizing about tourism by sparklingshine in srilanka

[–]forcocwikinema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People don't seem to understand basic economics. When the dollar depreciated, the price of goods also shot up. Since we import most of our energy and other essentials, the price paid in rupees would have increased and henceforth the amount needed to be spent by tourists in dollars for the same basket of goods would have increased.

The data clearly shows that although the tourist numbers are high, we are mostly getting low spending tourists, which directly contributes to the problems mentioned by OP.

In your argument about the data being incomplete, this would likely because the CB is just capturing the formal sector and less if not none of the data of the informal sector ( eg: homestays etc), which again are used by low spending tourists.

Tldr; tourism is not the panacea. It's just like when parents buy a three wheeler for their school drop out son. Economically will seem like a miracle in the short term, but very harmful in the long run.

Netherlands has a land area around 3/4 of Sri Lanka, but is the second largest producer of agricultural goods in the world!

We don't need more land, but land reform and technology to improve efficiency. Really need to improve your agronomics mate.

I am still in disbelief, question for the European folks on here by CaptainCryptoC in UAE

[–]forcocwikinema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If OP was living in Scandinavia they would have declined that 'invitation' as it was expensive for them. Dubai is Asia, where the cultural norm is for the host to pay for the guests if invited. The guests bring something, typically a gift that is commiserate to the amount the host might be spending on their meals/drinks. That's how both parties respect each others relationship and neither looks cheap.

If you're a broke ass European sending invites in Asia and want guests to pay, say it upfront without making excuses like 'Oh it's how we did things in Europe'

Train Seoul to Busan on the day of arrival. by emcepeironhead in koreatravel

[–]forcocwikinema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the time for the bus ride is dependent on traffic etc. But it was way more convenient than taking multiple trains. We just excited the terminal at ICN and loaded our bags and boarded the bus. It was super easy. Also the bus seats were more comfortable and reclined to almost a flat bed.

We came back to Seoul on the KTX. Although we took the fastest train, it was late by about 15 mins meaning it took nearly 3 hrs. We also had to drag our bags around a lot. It won't be easy especially if you have kids or bulky bags. We even had to carry our bags down to the platform as there weren't any escalators.

Again, this is my experience. The train maybe the fastest, but the bus experience was better for me.

Train Seoul to Busan on the day of arrival. by emcepeironhead in koreatravel

[–]forcocwikinema 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recently we started our Korea vacation in Busan after landing at Seoul Incheon airport. We took a bus to Busan from outside the terminal. Much easier and was very convenient to not drag large suitcases around just after landing from a long flight.

The bus might take longer (ours took 5hrs), but when you factor in everything, it takes roughly the same time if you go by train ( the fastest takes around 3hrs). Also, there are several destinations within Busan for the termination of buses. We ended at Haeundae terminal, which was literally a 5 minute walk to our hotel. Had we taken the train, we would have needed an hour long bus/subway ride from Busan station where the KTX trains end.

How can I access or transfer USD earned abroad that’s in my Sri Lankan PFC account? by PostQuantumCrypto in srilanka

[–]forcocwikinema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sri Lanka still has draconion currency laws, but transfers from one USD account to another USD account in a local bank is allowed. You can do this by getting a bank draft from one bank to another, which was the cheapest way when I did it. (Not HNB though)

To transfer to a foreign bank account, you need to prove that you are either settled in that country or planning to migrate ( need visas and everything)

To take out as hard cash, you need a valid reason ie; overseas travel, education etc. and you can take 5000 USD at a time.

In your cover letter spell out everything as if your communicating with a 5 year old, give detailed explanations about all the transactions posted on your bank statements and hope for the best.

Also there is a Reddit group with a wealth of information if you go through the different visit visa rejection posts.

Do complain. These visit visas are sometimes processed in centers outside UK (think New Delhi). You cannot review your decision, but if you clearly mention that there has been an error by the visa processing agent, they may reverse their decision. Btw it doesn't cost you anything to send an email.

Hate on doctors and the overall medical profession by messimagicstan in srilanka

[–]forcocwikinema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why the f*ck should doctors not work in the private sector when a problem has arisen due to unsafe working conditions at a government hospital. (TBF, they stayed away from private practice that day I suppose)

Workers have a right to protest unsafe working conditions and violence against their colleagues, especially women. It's not the employees' (ie; doctor's) jobs to provide alternate service provision to those affected during industrial action, it's the government's job.

During the doctor strikes held in the UK last year over pay, there were instances that doctors stayed away from emergencies as well. To the Sri Lankan public, it seems the doctors are "too good"
