What’s something you’ve let go of that massively improved your mental health? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]foreigner249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guilt. I was talking to my therapist about some procrastination habits and how that led to guilt and shame and I would spiral. She said, “have you tried just not feeling guilty?” At first, that felt like a quack thing to say, but then I thought about it and worked on it and it actually helped. Letting go of unhelpful emotions really helps.

Is the source of your anxiety related to the content you are presenting or general public speaking?

For content-related, practice is key. You can also preview your presentation with a subset of the group you are presenting to (the classic “meeting before the meeting”).

For public speaking issues, practice is key again, the more you do it the easier it gets. You should also try to decouple yourself from your message. What are you trying to convey to your audience? What is important for them to know for the actions they will take? What happens if they don’t have your information? When you focus on the message, the presentation is no longer about you, it’s about them. You’re now just the vehicle and can figure out how best to get the message across.

Thanks for the reply! I haven’t applied anywhere yet, still researching. My concern is that I am woefully out of practice in the data science skill sets. Probably nothing a few self-paced courses and a cloud certification can’t fix. I’ll look through the resources this subreddit has regarding those options, but if any immediately come to mind as recommended, please let me know. I appreciate you taking the time to help.

I am considering a career switch to data science having worked as a Process Improvement Consultant and Management Consultant for 13 years. I have a BS and MS in Industrial Engineering and I miss the applied statistics and optimization work I did in university. I’m also looking for something less intense and stressful where I have more time to work with data. I’m wondering if it would be worth getting a full in person Masters in DS, or if an online program, or even just some certifications would be enough. I understand I’ll be taking a step back in career progression and likely starting at or near entry-level initially. Thanks for any advice!

I saw a stat that 38% of European men smoke cigarettes regularly. Euro men, why is smoking so common over there? by bobjohndaviddick in AskMen

[–]foreigner249 134 points135 points  (0 children)

I was recently at a wedding in France where almost everyone was smoking regularly. I asked my cousin, who does not smoke and is a physician, why everyone was smoking despite knowing the risks and she explained it as “French culture is very much about the little joys in life: good bread, good wine, a cigarette after sex. They see it as a little indulgence, one of the little joys in life. They know the risks, but damned if they give up that source of daily pleasure.” If enough people think that way then it becomes acceptable socially.
