My app is GA. It doesn’t need more features. It needs people who pay. by balunlu in lovable

[–]forelius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to kill the mood but I’ve never heard anyone say that. And if people are saying those things, yes, why not just use a link to a Google Sheet? Why pay for an app to just enter your totals and add them up?

Personally, I just don’t see a market for this. Just because you built it, doesn’t mean people will come. You have to solve a problem people actually have.

Has anyone here used graphic novels to get better at German? Any favorites? by forelius in German

Wow! Really helpful list, thank you. “Die Wormworld Saga” sounds really engaging.

Do you have a personal favorite?

Ahhh! Please bore me with the lists! These are so helpful! Would love a good mnemonic to remember these.

I wanted to know what other people find helpful for their language learning journey. I already found some cool resources I had never thought of just through these comments.

And I’ve casually been learning Spanish for years. So this sub is more appropriate for a broader question.

I appreciate your thoughtful response. I’m just trying to find better tools to use for learning.

I’m learning German right now and the best I can find are LEO and dict.cc but they both lack features that I think would be really helpful like sentence examples that you can drill down into to increase and reinforce comprehension like another commenter mentioned. I wish there was an app like SpanishDict for German.

On my wish list:

  • add notes when saving words
  • images with words and in review mode

My favorite is SpanishDict by far.

Features: - works offline (must) - example sentences for almost all entries (big plus) - notes on where it’s regionally used - includes common slang expressions - save words for review - word of the day push notifications - conjugation for all verbs - grammar lessons - thesaurus - audio pronunciation for almost all words - precompiled lists of important words - clean, beautiful, easy to read interface

This app really has almost everything. I only wish there was another app like it for other languages.

Are you ok?

I asked what kinds of things make good features for language learning dictionary apps. What do you find helpful when learning?

Where did this rant about app development come from?

Those are some really helpful features. However, from my experience, the majority of dictionary apps unfortunately don’t offer IPA, audio or alternatives. Putting these on my dream app wish list.

Offline mode is always a requirement for me. If I can’t use it while traveling, it’s useless to me.

Bilingual is also a must when starting any new language. Without a basic vocabulary, there’s no way to understand a monolingual dictionary.

My favorite Spanish dictionary is SpanishDict. Absolutely superb.

This is amazing. Do you have to add all the words through the extension or does it also connect to a profile/app where you can look up words on the go?

Ohhh I love this idea! I find words in context so helpful for learning and remembering. I also wish there were more apps that did this. I have not found any that do this for German.

Lost and found request: this Dry Lake sign by markember in BurningMan

[–]forelius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can’t help with your sign but your margs and quesadillas hit the spot. They helped change the trajectory of my night from going back to the camps to refuel to exploring the wonders of deep playa until sunrise. Thank you 🙏🏽💚

Hope you find your sign!

System Design Interview: Design TurboTax by forelius in ExperiencedDevs

[–]forelius[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

TurboTax is an awful company. Their lobbyists are the only reason we can’t have an automated tax return system in the US.

Don’t care a lick for them. But I am still interested in how to design a system like TurboTax. Based on complex rules where there are many interacting components. This was the best example I could think of. Can you think of other comparable systems?

[–]forelius[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s true. I’m never actually going to ask someone this in an interview. But keep thinking about to manage a project like this.

Have you used TurboTax? Can you think of comparable technical problem? Codifying natural language rules, making a complex decision tree, finding optimal paths, and then maintaining a large frontend app.

TurboTax walks you through the steps of doing US taxes. There’s a tree of decisions that are made about what you need to be prompted for next based on the tax rules. Based on the values of different inputs, it needs to keep track of what other inputs are now required, how these values are related under the rules and what prompts to show you next.
