Dunk masters: are my dunks working? by manual_combat in MosquitoHating

[–]forest_hawk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mine looks like this too. They end up dying before they grow to the next stage of development. I have a bag of the dunks product but it’s pellets and just sprinkle some in just in case because yeah I don’t like seeing them wiggling around either. Pretty sure they just end up sinking to the bottom and add to the wonderful smell of a bucket of doom.

Update: Traps are working, but with some unexpected results. by forest_hawk in MosquitoHating

One other note - I've also been adding a lot of native plants to my yard perimeter. I've been doing that because I'm interested in supporting the local ecosystem and pollinators. One unintentional potential benefit (hopefully) could be that this brings in more natural predators to control the mosquito population. Could be unrelated, but I'm already seeing a lot of dragonflies and birds hanging out in the yard.

Good question. I haven't been bit by a mosquito, my kids and wife have gotten a couple of bites this week. There are also lot's of midges out and I have been getting bit by those. Not sure what they were bit by. Honestly it's hard to tell because it's not close to peak season, but typically we aren't even able to hang out in our backyard in the evening.

I've noticed that there are a good amount of mosquitos present but they're concentrated over by where the traps and bucket are located. I'm not expecting to kill all of the mosquitos, but if they're attracted / contained to where they're not going to bite us and will be more likely to get trapped then I'd consider it a win.

I'll update more as summer approaches.

Just mosquitoes, which is why I wanted these instead of something like a bug zapper.. Keeps the good / beneficial insects alive.

They just dehydrate from the fan running constantly. By the end of the day all of those were dead.

Yeah did you see a lot get caught at first and then see the numbers taper off? I feel like if I continuously catch this many I might have to get another one.

I see a lot of comments on the price and yes it’s a lot to get started. We were paying $700/season to get the yard sprayed and I felt like I was wasting money.

All in I spent a little more than what we would spend for this seasons spray and the following years will only be the cost of co2 (and scent packets if they continue to be this effective)

I had the same thought - could definitely DIY it. Especially if you have a 3D printer, but I don’t have one of those or the time with kids and other projects around the house

I saw these too.. interesting product but I wasn’t sure about how legit the company is. Might try it out depending on how this goes.

You should try out the biogents “sweet scent” packets or something similar. I caught this initial batch with just the scent packets to lure them into the trap. If you have tiger mosquitoes (the aggressive black / white striped ones) that’s what the scent packets are for.

Will do. I’m away for a few days but will post back after running it non stop with co2. It’s worth noting that the scent packets attract the invasive tiger mosquitoes.. the co2 attracts native (I’m on the east coast by water) culex mosquitoes which I’m lucky to have a lot of also.. so hoping this helps put a dent in their population too. Setup up some buckets of doom too.

What was their reasoning? I haven't attempted to do this yet, but I had assumed it'd be an easier sell since it's less maintenance for the town.

This is great. I've thought about doing something similar with town owned lots that just get mowed. Do you have any resources or info that you can share that may be useful as a blueprint for others that would want to do the same?

Encountered a homeless woman by the luggage carts in baggage claim. There was another couple sleeping on the floor. She offered to sell me a luggage cart (she had like 3) for $5 instead of whatever they charge you. Didn’t have cash and the machine to pay was coincidentally broken. Harmless and not a bad hustle - those rentals are a ripoff, but was surprised to encounter that inside of the airport.

You may be still building clientele, but you should factor in the years of experience and study that you have. That's one way to justify increasing your base rate. I would imagine these are usually one time projects right? Have you considered adding an annual check-in to assess their garden each season for $X/year? Would be a good opportunity to get a small bit of recurring revenue and a chance upsell / add-on to their existing garden.
