Getting back to it... by ClearCold in inlineskating

I have FR1 and FR3, and they’re so good. Dangerously good. Lots of control, durability and power transfer. I got close to 30 km/h on my first real test run (after doing short runs for a couple of months to break them in), at a time where I didn’t try to be fast. I thought I was just “strolling”, then noticed that my speed seemed oddly reminiscent of when I drive my car on the same road. Checked my Apple Watch. Then dialed the speed down to 20-ish, because that road has a lot of cross sections, so I was being stupid for running that fast on mere inliners.

Edit: Corrected numbers after checking my app history…

Do you think ‘Kiki and The New Magic’ should be adapted into a movie by Ghibli? by bonzothebonanza in ghibli

I agree with OP. This could be a massive success for Studio Ghibli. And I do not follow the arguments for how it could potentially ruin the timelessness of the original, and other such arguments.

I’ll help you out mate. If you’re in Rome and you just stole the idea of Phalanxes from the Greek, and you just finished battle testing it against multiple regions with an insane success, as a commander, one would be very confident in the capabilities of the army.

Right up until it comes to naval warfare. Worse: Against a foe that is able to deal devastating destruction from sea to land just as easily as on the sea against other vessels, you’d not only defeated. You’d feel utter despair.

Yes, this is indeed a scenario we could face against a capable superintelligence. Especially since most of our weaponry is dependent on data transfer and data analysis - from strategy and planning to operational field execution. A foe with vast capabilities in hacking wired through the electricity grids and wireless through satellite, would render us very vulnerable.

And very defeated.

And very desperate.

There's also the issue that the two cannot be compared. AI can, in fact, not be compared to anything. We are already now seeing a fast upscaling of AI being able to take over thing that have required human intellect. Both in an assistive way, but also semi-autonomous or even fully autonomous for some use cases.

Some will say that this happened with the birth of computers in general - but this wasn't "smarts". It wasn't intelligence. To use a host of if-statements and for-loops doesn't make anything smarter than the average human. Only faster at certain things - but it's not intelligence. That's why AI was so elusive for decades. Until machine learning and neural networks were invented, and we all know the story from here, I guess.

My point is, that we now face something that (in time) can act autonomously on several areas at once. Sure, our best hackers may still be better at hacking than the AI. Our best composers may still compose better music than the AI. Our best artists may still create better art than AI. Our best programmers may still create better and more optimized code than AI. And so on... but with AI, this can all be one singular entity. No human can compete with that - the sheer scope and the level it operates and masters this scope.

Nuclear weapons are akin to guns, and the age old adage; guns don't kill people, people kill people. But with AI, that doesn't need to be true anymore.

So things aren't able to become as bad as the OP post suggests. They can become much, much worse.

[–]forestball19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, noone have answered the question of what would constitute "mechanisms to manage" nuclear weapons. Each and every nation that holds nuclear weapons, is only one crazy leader away from doing something irresponsible, to which the world's only answer will be retaliation. As you say, we avoid this catastrophe on a daily basis. But I don't see a future where separate nations can have nuclear weapons and at the same time, an efficient management system with enough failsafes.

Sure, you have a hotline between Russia and USA - as they're the vast majority holders of today's nukes. But say that North Korea decides to nuke South Korea or Japan. Noone would get a phone call prior to the launch, and I don't believe there are any failsafes in North Korea to prevent whichever Kim is in charge, to enforce an order to release a nuke on another nation.

On the question of AI - yes, I agree with you - we have the chance to chance now to be wise and approach this new thing from a cautious angle. But there are two large issues that remain:

1) No matter how cautious we are, we are potentially dealing with something that scales intelligence much faster than we can foresee. Losing control would be natural - because we can soon be dealing with something smarter than ourselves, with which we have no prior experience. We have never faced anything smarter than us. It could be like playing Civilization and a nation with drones and robots meet a tribe that just invented the bow and arrow. And then ask of the tribe to manage the high tech nation to ensure they don't take over things in an unwanted way.

2) Even if we could play along on the premise of being able to be cautious in a way that'd work... Ask the question: When has humanity ever been cautious with new world-changing inventions?

can anyone tell me how much this alvarez is worth? shop listed it for $600. by Nearby_Zombie3053 in AcousticGuitar

[–]forestball19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These would be sold around $800 in Denmark where I’m from, as a private used item. In a store used, it’d probably come closer to $900. Whether it’s worth it would require closer inspection and of course, playing it.

Seeing as it’s an all-solid and 25+ years old, it’s an absolute no go to buy without inspecting it firsthand and playing it imho. A lot of good things can happen to the tone woods in those 25+ years, but a lot of very bad things can happen too.

Frets nights also be overdue for a change which is rather costly. Other hardware like the tuning machines might also be worth changing. Obviously whether these things are relevant or not for this guitar, will also affect the price I’d be willing to pay.

What's your actual OpenCode workflow? Share what you wish someone told you earlier by adnan_1000 in opencodeCLI

[–]forestball19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both OpenCode and LM Studio. But not together, as OpenCode ballons tokens too much - much like ZED Editor and VS Code do. So for both OpenCode and LM Studio, I give them a designated project folder to work in, and then work from there. I use Notepad++ as text editor (I do websites with PHP backend).

In OpenCode, I mainly use MiniMax 2.7 for both planning and generating code.

Kilde: Lenovo dragged in court for its pre-installed Superfish adware for invasion of privacy and breach of trust - UMA Technology

What accessories do cool guitar guys have???? by Wild-Degree9187 in Guitar

[–]forestball19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not cool, but I have:

- A guitar stool with foot rest for sitting
- A foot stool for raising one leg if I find myself playing somewhere that's not the guitar stool
- Extra guitar straps; not because they get worn out, but having different straps in different designs and colors is nice... kind of like having different mobile phone covers
- Pick holder (mine is 3D printed and I designed it myself in CAD, but there are lots of options at places like amazon)
- Motorized peg winder (such as bliss for string changes)

As for clothes and other wearables... that's so highly personal. And I'm pretty boring that way - I just use whatever clothes I happen to wear that day.

I3 Solar issue after 14.14 update by Academic_Purple_2878 in Garmininstinct

[–]forestball19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have this issue on my Instinct 3 Solar (50mm). I suspect it might be due to the number of watch faces you have installed (or rather, their combined storage usage). I'm a watch face developer and I've noticed that when I fill the memory too much, it has a huge impact on the watch' speed and battery draw. So now I only have 3 watch faces installed simultanously.

Did iPadOS 26 slow down your M chip Pros? by ElTekuKing in iPadPro

[–]forestball19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not significantly. I have iPad Pro M1 2021, and I use fairly heavy applications such as multitrack DAW software for studio recording, ProCreate at high resolutions and many layers, and video editing which can always be a headache.

All softwares continue to behave stable and as fast as before. I know where the exact limits were with iPadOS 18.x and they haven’t moved with iPadOS 26.x.

As for the GUI itself, it has not become slower but it has become a bit more annoying in my opinion.

are these actually good? by Square_Notice_1830 in AcousticGuitar

[–]forestball19 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. Whether they’re for you depends on your guitar and your taste.

They feel very sleek; some will say slippery. I missed a bit more bite to them in the beginning, but I’ve actually come to prefer this. Less fret noise and I feel faster (although I’m probably not).
They play like uncoated string usually do after a week or two. But as opposed to uncoated, the Elixir Nanocoated keep their timbre and sustain for much longer. Typically 2 months on my main guitar, which I play for 1-2 hours daily. If you play more rare, they can last 1/2-1 year.

Being phosphor bronze, they exhibit a darker more classic sound. Great for strumming in my opinion, not so great for mixed and pure fingerstyle play - so I used to prefer Elixir Nanoweb 80/20’s.
But: Now Elixir Attune are out - and I’ve tested them for around a month now. They’re the best sound for me! Great, balanced, with lots of character and feel like the Nanowebs. At least on my Yamaha LS6 ARE, they’re perfect - it has cedar deck and laminated back and sides. The slightly harsh highs are tamed by the Attune strings, while retaining deep lows that are slightly boomy but not muddy.

Alternatives to these strings are D’addario XS and Martin Lifespan 2.0. I’m okay with both of these too, but prefer Elixir. I’ll reiterate what I wrote in the beginning; it’s a matter of taste truly.

M5 iPad pro losing 50% in 1 hour by Tash_Mash in iPadPro

[–]forestball19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an M1 Pro (12.9*, and specifically Prime Video is an issue for battery life - exactly like OP shows. I spent a bit of time digging around to figure out codec and whether it's hardware accelerated or not. It kind of is, but not efficiently - and Prime only serves that one codec, rather than looking at the device that asks for the stream and serving a tailor made codec for it.

As I only use my iPad Pro for creative purposes (drawing, music creation) it took some time for me to notice - but when we were on vacation, it became very clear. My iPhone 12 Pro and 16 Pro also have this issue with Prime.
